Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

I've been a staunch defender of his over the years but I think he might need a trial up forward or I could see him on the cusp of missing out once everyone is fit.

Then he will pull an awesome few weeks out, his errors are just ugly, but as you quite rightly say not every player in the team is a star. I think at times he is a victim of the flashy things he does. He looks silky and looks classy/elite but in reality is a good honest trier, which is fine. Know your limitations more at times

Hindsight is great, it would have been nice to pick the player straight after him.

Look, Florent may have a spot on the team but it certainly should not be in defence for the rest of his career.

He’s a very good set shot at goal, can run…… im sure there is something there for him.
Maybe a highly paid dedicated sub.

New coach - needs to make a statement. Ollie Immediately should be dropped to the 2’s. Macca had great composure - Ollie has none. Macca to teach and only once ready does he come near the firsts again.

If he can’t make it, trade him.

Not about we have no one to fill it due to injuries atm, it’s about your personal impact and consequences.

JHWF - truth teller since 2023.

I wonder will it ever click for him? I assume being put in different positions doesn’t help him but he is one of our most experienced players now.

I don’t see any leadership materials in him and has never had good hands under pressure.

He seemed to start seasons well with us thinking he’s ready to step up to the next level and then he would completely fall off the map

The excuses are starting to dry up for him.

Im angry as it was so dumb , he had 2 Swans that were clear closer to goal and no one near them , as i used to say to kids i was coaching DON'T KICK IT INTO DEATH VALLEY

it was ****en basic footy wasn't it. Roberts I guess you could also say don't turn your back to the play , but then again the kick was no where near him.

What was Florent even hoping for in the moment ? even if he hit Roberts he was in the middle of a few Hawks

Sorry for the intrusion, does this guy just escape criticism? His game tonight was simply awful, fumbles, poor possessions, just terrible, was like a first gamer
It was an unforgivable error, poor old Coxy looked devastated up in the box.

I have always defended him too, but if an under 10yo did THAT kick, coach would take him aside and have a few words - it was unforgivable, particularly for someone with his experience.
Florent will not be dropped.
No he won't be, but he bloody deserves to be after that. You could pretty much see every player drop their heads after that.

The easy option is to make him a scapegoat and drop him etc. Extreme as it is if Cox did do that I could see the logic.

I thought he had a poor game, but as shit as his one kick was we can’t just focus on that and ignore how we got to the point where it mattered.

Millky said watch us kick 0-7 in the last, we almost got there, we could have won that game early in the fourth

Some overreactions in here IMO. His decision making isn't great, but he's definitely got traits that could make him a solid contributor in the forward line or perhaps on the wing. Pace, generally a great first touch, and a good shot on goal.

I really don't think I've read anything here that I could call an over reaction, if he'd have only played ten or so games - yep, over reactions, but he's played 167!!!!
No professional footballer should attempt that kick he tried last night, even one with the ability of Errol, particularly when the game is in the balance.

IMO the posts saying he should be dropped at the end of the year (which I take to mean delisted) or traded are an overreaction. Like, maybe the latter is fair enough if we got fair value, but you never get anything close to fair value for someone you're trying to push out.

He's prone to making stupid errors, but he's a comfortably better player than someone that should be in the delist/trade discussion and I'm very confident we'd be made to look like stupid pretty quickly if we pushed him out.
