Review Round 1 v Geelong

Of all the things I didn't like about that, and there was a lot - I really didn't like that time Ryan helped Dangerfield get up off the ground.

Thought the same thing when I saw that. They were well ahead at that point and I would have almost forgiven him if he gave away a free by pushing Dangerfield over again but he offers a helping hand like it was a pre-season scratchie. Maybe that's where Luke was at today in terms of his preparation.

What made this loss doubly disappointing was the fact that despite the first half being a disaster, we found ourselves in the game at 3/4 time due to some individual brilliance.

Then we went and outdid the first half for embarrassment. It was like two horror shows in one.

If it ended up being a close loss after the 3d quarter fightback, yeah that would still be frustrating but you could argue anomalies and stuff. That 4th quarter just showed our soft underbelly. Somethings wrong. I mean the coach is definitely wrong, but it might be more. This list should not be performing like this at this stage, they are basically smack bang in their prime now.

All those complaining about the last quarter blowout/capitalisation. That's what happens when you do completely open up the game to try and win but don't have the players to do it, talent wise or on the day, whether all tickets were spent

Add to that the defences capitulation when they get overwhelmed, they just let the dam wall break and can't win a one one to save their life

We are famous for 4thQ fade-outs, were we number 1 in the AFL in 2024 for being ahead at 3Q time and then losing?
Likewise we are famous for conservative, bewildering, imagination-less team selections.
I knew what you meant in your 1st post, I think your reply makes our inability to fix things quickly in these areas even clearer. sameoldsameoldsameoldsameold...
What's this "we" stuff?
It should read "JLo coached teams" not "we".

Historically we've had several different periods under other coaches where 4th quarter comebacks were about all we could look forward to.

Wow.

Only 3 pages with most of the posts by a GWS supporter. I think we're all just done.
Remember with the new Saturday free to air TV broadcast rules, some folks in different states may only just now be finally watching the last quarter in the first free to air broadcast of the game in their state. Delayed reactions perhaps.

I'm one million times more disappointed in Ryan and Amiss than I am Banfield from today's embarrassment

Sharp is an athlete with no footy brain

Walker.......same same honestly

Although not sure why you single out banners for today's embarrassment. Not his best but far from the worst, even within the forward line, but I guess you did mention amiss.

Banners had few score involvements from the treacys and one of Reid's goal. The point to O'Meara which he should of kicked. Had a goal himself and the tight miss for a point. Could of done better with two other snaps but yeh

Still waiting for a refund for that game against Melbourne at the MCG where we coughed up a huge half time lead tbh

I was there too. Horrific loss.
Ahh yesss the time we lost despite being 54 points up after half time, the Austin Wonaeamirri comeback championship. Truly one of the worst losses of that era at the MCG - and easily the biggest lead we had ever held and then lost at the G. Us east coast supporters would wait so long for a game where the team played well and looked like we could win by a huge margin at the G - and then that Aussie Wona game smacks us around.

Last time I ever took my lucky scarf to a game at the G, and the only Freo game my Mum ever got to see live at the G with me.

I had more hope (and we had a much worse squad) then than I do now though.
Can't see much changing for us without a fundamental change at both selection table and playing style, and neither of those seem likely to happen under the current coach.

All I'll say is that Murphy Reid should never play WAFL, those ten minutes from him were the best part of the game, Switkowski may be out for a bit so have Reid take his role, drop Banfield and bring Bolton and Simpson in. Let them do something with this forward line.

I swear 90% of our fans are clinically insane. When was the last time we got talked up in the media and we came out that same week and performed up to that standard? Combine that with key injuries and our experience demographic playing away and I'm not sure why anyone doesn't think retrospectively "yeah that was probably always going to happen". The capitulation in the last 10 minutes was mind blowing though, for a team wanting to win a first premiership... wtf?

We sucked ass. On to next week to turn things around at home.
Being good at home is never enough when the grand final is in Melbourne

That's not true at all though. We were poor at winning close games last season (probably the worst in the AFL). That certainly isn't the same as giving up 10 goals to 1 in the 4th.

Other than our game against Bulldogs in 2024, where we gave up 8 goals to 3 in the 4th, is there another game you know of where we capitulated in the same ballpark last season?

Also, if you think we are the only fan group complaining about team selections then you clearly haven't ventured off the Freo board before. I find the whole team selection thing hilarious because half the time fans complain about someone being selected but then don't offer an available alternative. Take Reidy - fans were furious last season we didn't play him. This season fans are furious we did play him. If we eventually play Brodie (and more than likely he doesn't perform that well) it will be the same.

I am in Melbourne on holiday. I had a ticket for the game. I had quite a bad fall in the street yesterday and have quite a few scrapes and bruises. However I found the commitment to my team to catch the ruddy train down to ruddy Geelong and watch my team totally embarrass me. They do not deserve me. They do not deserve any of us.

There were so many times where we stuck the tackle and the Geelong player just dropped or threw the ball (looking at you Bailey Smith) and they were all good. Meanwhile we were getting pinged where the players had no prior at all. One of Jezza's goals came from a htb that Geelong had gotten away with just seconds earlier.
We all probably need to recalculate in our heads the what and why of htb rulings.

My ratings of the Freo defence line today:

Brennan Cox - 2.5/10
Luke Ryan - 1.5/10
Alex Pearce - 0.5/10
Joshua Draper 4.5/10
Jordan Clark 7.5/10
Brandon Walker 4/10

Hate to say this but as a collective unit, they were slow today. On ground level, the Cats looked so much more quicker. Not sure what the solution is . Getting Chapman in there with a bit of fast legs helps but one senses they may need more than that.

The problem is the key players missing don't really solve those problems eg Young a mid, Darcy a ruck and Shai Bolton a forward.

I must have been something like a goal per minute for their last 8 goals. We started the last quarter with a slim chance to win with that 3rd quarter Murphy Reid surge to get within 21 points but nothing happened for either side until about 10 minutes into the last quarter, which probably did as much to make us look like squibs for the rest of the game. After Geelong eventually kicked the first couple of goals in the last quarter I think a few too many didn't fight off the mentality that there was no point pushing harder because they couldn't win it.

Around that time where it was an arm wrestle we did have some chances to push forward. There was one where Sharp kicked it long to Reidy just past the wing boundary and he made the ground to take a mark over the back but then didn't really know what to do next and eventually kicked it short and sideways.

There were too many moments like that in the game. I'd guess some of it is the set up forward of the play, whether it's not working hard enough to push forward, or the Geelong defence getting into position quick - Amiss did the same thing a couple of times earlier in the match - we look as if we could get some momentum and then it gets dead ended while still having control of possession. It's more frustrating than the live ball turnovers caused by opposition tackling and pressure.

Pearce was decent until the last quarter

No. He looked terrible slow. I think the injury (he picked up which ruled him out of All Stars game) seems to be holding him back. The younger blokes in Neale, Sam De Koning and J Cameron were all too physically stronger and faster than him. Pearces strength is usually in the air and his one-on-one body work/positioning to spoil. Dunno , 1 year is a long time in footy ..............he looked a shadow of his potential All -Australian form from 2022.

I just call it as I see it.
