It’s been a while since Carlton beat Richmond, especially in round 1.

But if you believe the hype, the Blues are still coming.

The below picture surprises me because there are no spelling mistakes.

For once, these two teams won't open the season.
Let's delve a little deeper into this round 1 bye...I mean clash.

PERSONELL
Carlton
The Blues will miss Sam Walsh. He's an out and out star.
Good news for all footy fans is that Sam Docherty will play after a battle with testicular cancer. I think we all don't mind seeing him fit and healthy again.
Liam Stocker, Josh Honey and Caleb Marchbank are all nursing injuries in what looks like a pretty healthy list overall.

Richmond
No 9 draft pick Josh Gibcus will debut.
Kane Lambert is likely to miss a large chunk, if not all, of the season while Jack Graham won't be fit for round 1.
Co-skipper Dylan Grimes is making a last ditch bid to be fit while Toby Nankervis has the spicy cough, but gets out of isolation the day before the game and is available.
Nick Vlastuin looks set to miss.

MATCH UPS
If Grimes doesn't come up, it puts a massive weight onto the shoulders of Gibcus who would have to stand one of McKay or Curnow. However, he is recovering quickly from a hand injury and is expected to line up.
Noah Balta has been playing up forward, but he may need to be ready to race back to the defensive 50 if need be.
Trent Cotchin looks like he has a new lease on footy life and Patrick Cripps finally looks to have shaken off all those niggles. Both midfielders could spend a fair chunk of time in each other's presence.

NEW FACES
Carlton has added another overpriced hack back flanker in George Hewett to compliment the other dud half backs in Adam Saad and Zac Williams.
Adam Cerra will slot nicely into the midfield because there is no room on the half back flank.
Michael Voss is the new face of the Carlton Football Club.

As noted earlier, Josh Gibcus will debut for Richmond as will Robbie Tarrant while mastercoach David Teague will debut as a Richmond assistant after leading Carlton to their most successful period in 15 years.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING
David King: "I think Richmond will make a statement on Thursday. Carlton turned the ball over 95 times against Melbourne, who are finding their way back into it. "If they turn it over 95 times against the Tigers, they'll lose by 15 goals. No one punishes like Richmond."

WHO WINS?
According to Carlton fans, the wait is finally over.
And to be fair, there is reason for at least some form optimism at Paper Bag Oval.
David King to be the prophet: Richmond by 90 points.

obviously hardwick & co taking the piss. Balta is obviously playing forward. were not lining up with a defence of broad, gibcus, tarrant, grimes and balta. way too tall. its a pisstake. obivously.
I don't think so. Only 7 defenders named (including Balta).

Agree, Would love to ask Hardwick why he plays in front of at least 5 other players
He’s a park footballer.
I’m so pissed off

This side is not going to go anywhere significant until guys like Aarts, Castagna and Pickett are upgraded.

Give me Ralphsmith and RCD etc

They talked about giving more young guys a chance but that was all talk so far. The mature age battlers are still getting the favoritism.
mostly agree except for Picket..he stood up late last year and had some great games.....Aarts and George are in the team for mongrel and pace ----not much else. Waiting for Stack to pull his finger out. Hugo needs to play before one of those two.

could have pickett floating back but yeah deceptive point. Unless the plan is for balta and tarrant to take the gorillas and grimes and gibcus to just intercept everything. all of them are quick so not that much of a disadvantage.

He's one of the key ingredients of playing off a "short pitch". Pressure in our F50 and lock the ball in, then score. I'm amazed how many of our Richmond supporters can't see his value.
He played that role fine back when he would actually tackle people. Now he just runs wherever the ball ain't, in between possessions, "guarding space", having zero impact. You can get a player to provide pressure and actually score or assist scoring or have basic skills. Look at Baker, then have a look at George.

Different players. Baker is clean as a whistle, but he's not as fast. Love Baker.

With the ball, I'd rather Baker every day, but when the balls in dispute, or the opposition has it in our F50, I'd take George - he's mad.

You'd have George over Baker when the ball's in dispute? That's an interesting take. George is a ball of energy but he's not a ball winner. In fact he's not even a tackler. Idk.

Why is balta now named down back after playing forward all preseason? That backline is way too tall
Might not play there, or at least not the whole game. I think they are playing with the idea of using him as a swingman

Agree would take Baker by my side in a bar fight over George

Would have had Ralphsmith ahead of Pickett but other than that it’s a pretty good side. I can’t see us staying with this many talls all year.

Except Aarts has no grunt.

Yeah I saw that too - we always play 7 defenders (usually 6 on field and 1 on bench). If we do play Balta forward, maybe slide Titch to defence? He was outstanding in that role several times in 2019. We have heaps of half forwards, so seems a possibility. For those bagging George, if we're selecting on Practice Match form then he is in easily. Does tend to start season's pretty strongly from memory.
