Is there any news around Barry O'Connor

Not on the injury list yet didn't play Footscray
Saw him in the dressing room hugging Buddy yesterday...

Best game by Gould in the Red and White and his kicking is 'A' grade, although he appeared to be 'gassed' several times, maybe still needs a lot of work.

Sinkers playing FF and perfect role for him, Mc Andrew really showing the goods.

Warner, Rankin, Roberts were good in first games and old stagers dominated with Taylor and Clarke.

Could have been a 10 goal win but a nice start.

Yep re Gould. A good game from him tho his ability for second and third efforts still seems impeded by stamina.

Despite the umps giving umpteen frees against him to a smart old ruckman, I was really impressed with MacAndrew - not just his tapwork but commitment to fight on when the ball was in dispute. He seems a real prospect.

I thought the new kids were good. I also really liked the look of young Geddes (still Academy) and Shipway.

If I have one criticism of the game plan it was the amount of time Taylor and Clarke both spent on ball inc at CBA. I would much prefer only one of them attend CBs and a kid get experience in there. Neither is likely to play senior footy again and part of their role is teaching.

I was chatting to one of the Bulldogs players who played in the game and he gave me some observations:

Amartey is huge (and good)
Swans VFL play exactly like the seniors
Swans played with their head over the ball for longer than the Bulldogs
At one stage they were told the swans had scored 7.9 of which 7.2 were from turnovers (which may have been pressure)
Ladhams was lucky not to be reported
Swans have a lot more listed players playing than the Bulldogs
Swans will go well this year if they keep these players

It was interesting to get a perspective from an opposition player.

Terrific insights, although according to the commentators we had 16 listed players and the Dogs 13.

Yes we had more listed players on the day but we lost Fox, Melican, and COR for most of the day when the game was still in the balance. Given all 3 were defenders that makes our performance on the day even more impressive.

Dogs were a damn good team last year, so a strong win against them is a great start. Hope Laids takes command of CBAs as suggested by GUH. Sheldrick will probably be back next week unless he's picked in seniors. Might be time for Roberts to have a go at medi-sub for the experience.
Picking a backline will be tough unless someone gets dropped (very unlikely!).

With the ressies playing a day later we could see Sheldrick sub again, but we do rotate it, so might be Campbell (59% TOG vs Cats) or Matty Roberts for the away trip experience (would hope we let him debut properly later though). Bell looms after his VFL shift (would prefer Taylor if we're just going with one of the more experienced ressies).

Please not Bell !

Like your thinking. Especially re Roberts. Bell a good choice.

Finally got around to watching the game, on replay (on AFL.com) which bizarrely started 8 minutes into the 1st qtr, with both teams already on the scoreboard.
So FWIW a few thoughts.

I favoured delisting Gould at the end of last season, but he was a lot better in this game.
My main fault with him previously was that he lacked defensive smarts. Too often he was caught in no man's land, lost his opponent or didn't impact a contest.
He constantly had his head on a swivel in this game and his awareness and influence was much improved.

Of our recruits I was most impressed with Warner.
Happy to get his hands dirty, nice disposal, but the thing that impressed me the most, was that he was willing to keep his width to offer an outlet.
Often young guys will ball chase, but he seemed to understand his role particularly well.

Glad that McAndrew was given plenty of time in the ruck, particularly against a strong, experienced ruck in Stef Martin.
Definite signs of improvement.

Thought the team played well for each other.
Older players happy to dish off to the younger guys and I particularly liked a Ronke block (on McComb) at a ball up in our fwd line in the 3rd qtr to enable Roberts a run at the ball.

Roberts got plenty of on ball time and picked up plenty of possessions, but I felt too often he was see ball, get ball and the guys he was up against (McComb, Garcia, Wallis),
would often read the ball better than him. Not suggesting he should have been given a lockdown role, but perhaps a bit more attention to his opponents.

Just never felt Ladhams stamped his mark on the game.
Decent stats, couple of cheap late goals but just seemed to lack real intensity and urgency.

Disappointing to seemingly pick up a few injuries, but overall decent performance and good result.
There is always discussion about how important is winning in the reserves (v development), but I think the players will have enjoyed that win, considering we were undermanned from the 2nd qtr on and (people may not know this) Footscray went 10-0 in the VFL last season. :)

Looking forward to seeing the side for this match and also the tactics.

Would like to see Sheldrick and Roberts do a lot of CBAs with one of Taylor or Clarke. Expect Angus will spend a fair share of time fwd in a shadow Papley/Wicks role.

MacAndrew did the bulk of the ruckwork last week and expect Ladhams to do a bit more there.
