Scott has done more to increase vitriol towards umps than anything else. Does he think fans arent going to react to umps calling 50 for having players hold their arms out?

I get there's a shortage of umps. But he never explained the link between AFL players arguing with umps and these shortages.

I get the paying 50 for obvious abuse.

But adult relationships aren't built on this 'hold out your arms and its 50' stuff.

I remember a story where Carey was giving it to an ump. The ump turns around and tells him to shut the fu** up and get a kick. Love it.

And now we will have umpires who are more sensitive than others. This will be a shit show.

makey makes a lot more sence than scotts. i umpired jumior footy for 3 seasons and was never once intinidated by players waving their arms. some of their parents is another story.

Yep this is it. Parents at the junior levels are ****ed. He's said its hard to change this, so pinging 50s at the AFL level when there's no proven link between behaviour towards AFL umpires filtering to the junior levels is easier.

Hence the need to make better pathways for players to transition to umpiring as a career. They already know the rules and they have the fitness. Plenty of early or mid 20's players are delisted every year and it could be a full time career, that lasts for over a decade, that they could step into straight away. In fact the umpiring department should be able to bid on delisted players that don't get picked back up, televise it to add another day to the draft coverage too seeing as that is apparently a high priority for the league
