Really don't know why ppl are so upset by this, there is a severe shortage of umpires and they're trying to fix it (albeit a little late).

Umpires are not sport stars, they get paid hourly like most of us, and no one deserves to be abused and yelled back at in their workplace.
They're not getting paid $350k a year like players to take that type of sh!t.

The survey of leaving umpires has 10% saying they left because of lack of enjoyment and 6% because of abuse as the main reason.
13% said pay which is also being addressed.

There’s a difference between abuse and a brief show of frustration though.

completely get that, but how do you define the difference? which is why i think they're trying to make the rule black and white. otherwise it's stuck in a grey areas and leads to more inconsistent rulings.

by saying arms out is a free is crap but it will help make it consistent don't you think?

To be overly punitive just to be consistent is a slippery slope though. I just expect common sense to be applied. It’s human nature to react in some manner if you disagree, of course no one wants umpires abused and perhaps the penalty should be more severe for blatant disrespect.

Many of the games rules aren’t black and white, perhaps holding the ball should be if you have the ball and are tackled which causes a stoppage you should have a free kick paid against you, regardless of prior opportunity.

Only 6%? So what are they doing this rubbish for?

Many of the other responses are indirectly tied to umpire treatment, not just direct abuse. e.g. Job satisfaction, enjoyment, stress, respect, etc

It's quite clear that this one thing is a huge factor affecting ppl wanting to be umpires, hence the push.

This rule in particular is only going to make it worse for them. It’s an emotionally charged game and players have a lot on the line. Expecting players to suppress an instinctive reaction like putting your hands out in frustration after giving away a free kick is over the top.

Then on the other hand we have players getting smashed in the media for having a laugh with the opposition after a loss (which I also hate seeing).

It’s just asking too much of them.

I’d actually go further, free kicks for staging, exaggeration, ducking or leading with the head coupled with a week suspension for first offence, suspension doubles with each subsequent violation by the same player.

I just assumed if you've decided to become an umpire you secretly have a fetish or get off on being abused. Razor def did. It's part of the job. No different to a heel in wrestling. On the job application it should say "no thin skinned applicatants accepted or those missing a spine"

They definitely should get paid more and do it full time. That way there are no excuses if they keep stuffing up. Maybe the AFL can sit them down with a psychologist and ask them why a player throwing their arms out is so upsetting to them.

To be fair that was one of a few games that have been fixed against us.

Fixed ya reckon, Rodders? Didn't I see Macrae on Good Friday collapse at the knees every time a tackler approached, and didn't I see him get a free kick for a high tackle whenever he did? He nearly concussed himself on one occasion; I suppose the North player would have got weeks if Macrae had been ruled out by the doc....

It's not the umpire abuse from players which is turning umpires away from the game, it's the abuse from spectators. Absolutely they should pay a free kick or a 50 against a player who swears at an umpire or abuses him or her in any way. And yes the game has a culture of disrespecting umpires which needs to be addressed. But penalising players for waving their arms will do nothing to stop fans abusing umpires. Next we'll be giving a free to players who say something nice to the maggots.
I seem to recall that Clarko was very big on players having good raport with umpires and on them not arguing. The payback was significant because the umpires enjoyed the nice hawthorne player behaviour. I had several umpire mates back in the day and they would say that North got what they deserved because they had a lot of mouthy players. The Geesh especially did not like North Melbourne, and #18 in particular.

The way to get frees in this game is to be a complete suckhole towards umpires.

No

The decision hasn’t been made
You are correct but the point highlights the sheer and utter stupidity of the rule (the gold standard stupidity of the AFL). if a player shows negative emotion to a decision that was made they will be penalised by a 50m being paid against them. But if the umpire didn't make a decision (actually, they made a decision to not pay a free) then a demonstration of negative emotion cannot be penalised.

I guess Brad Scotts brought in the 6-6-6 rule that he never actually managed to exploit in any way so it could not be a surprise to anybody that another act of sheer lunacy would be the order of the day.

Look, it’s funny of course, but Scott is clearly saying that dissent has been part of the game in the past and it’s time to change that attitude - the fact he has been part of that past as a player and coach isn’t really relevant.

In 2011 we played St Kilda at Docklands in round 21 and needed to win to make finals. That was the year Drew was AA and was talking screamers on campaigners heads each week.

We were mounting a come back in the 2nd quarter when Zac Dawson chopped Drew’s arms and then spoiled him around the neck. Razor Ray the piece of shit called play on and we all collectively lost our heads. I think it was the first and only time I’ve smacked a seat at Docklands and chipped it.
Channel 10 had the camera on Brad in the box and it showed him slamming both hands into the window he was losing it at Razor. The current day version is a long way far gone from the man in the box that day.

Phoney if I ever saw one.

It'll be actually worse for the umpires re fans frothing.

If the fans perceive they have cost them a game for an arm waving 50, the umps that day will be basted, roasted and pulled apart as they walk off.

I can't wait tbh
