That he does not add to our player pool at VFL level. Jeremias has been big on this and I tend to agree.

This leads me to believe that club thinks he’s ready to go at AFL level. Perhaps on a wing.
There is no way they would choose a player to help the VFL team....need to be fired if that's why they select someone

Of course we are aiming for a player capable at AFL level, but bringing in a player from outside our system would make our reserves stronger.

Better handball, better kick under pressure, smarter with ball but he was playing much closer to contests than Cotts ...
I've been semi impressed by Cotts especially against the swans. The other thing, has Hayes being played on ball or on a wing?

Hayes certainly is a cut above VFL, did he get injured though?
You said the 'i' word.
Can no-one say the 'i' word now for a very long time? Please?
Better yet, can no player get ...you know..that word....for like...ever again?

Hayes is also a guy who would play for minimum wage. Maybe come the end of year any player like Dow, Setterfield etc who are our current depth we will want to replace with a similar level player on lower dollars to create cap space for a FA?

Who really knows, maybe the club just think he is an AFL level player.

A lot of talk about him challenging for a wing position.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Dow & Setterfield were both trade bait and Hayes soon elevated himself to be our first midfield depth player should any of our fab 5 miss a game.
  • Dow - Looking at what our coaches are trying to build, I don't think they like his lack of defensive running. Voss wasn't exactly glowing in his assessment of Dow in his post-Collingwood presser.
  • Setterfield - Hayes might already be above him in the pecking order based on VFL performances.
  • Carroll - Only a 2nd year player, still developing. Was exposed in the Collingwood game when the pressure went up.
  • Curnow - Injured and likely to retire.
  • Cunners - Always injured.

So really, Hayes could be a very useful depth pick up.

He is 26, i see it as cover only, but we have a fair number of options around this type

Perhaps it is only a 6 month insurance gap

Could it be an insight to how Voss rates our second string mid options? Or is it a TPP decision? We have Hayes out performing Carlton listed players who are taking up sizeable cap room or Voss might actually feel Hayes is a better option than Dow and Setters in case of injury.

As someone who watches a bit of VFL, if Hayes was on our list all year, would he have been picked before Setters or Dow?

If the answer is yes, then picking him up and trading one of the others would be a good move financially.
