Of course we are aiming for a player capable at AFL level, but bringing in a player from outside our system would make our reserves stronger.

You recruit for the VFL & draft for the AFL. Separate entities (but one) & no way should bolstering your reserves be influencing your decision to draft someone to the CFC.

Also, they’re fostering a pathway VFL>AFL, which will assist in recruiting for future years (though we may lose some as well that haven’t made it). Box Hill is a good example of a feeder system, they’ve again drafted from their own backyard with good results previously.

If you draft a best 22 player from outside our system you still improve the VFL, as a player previously playing AFL would now be playing twos. If that player doesn’t play at AFL level, we still improve the VFL side.

Doesn’t matter anymore. Hayes probably would’ve played this year already had he been our list, so why not give him a crack.

That he does not add to our player pool at VFL level. Jeremias has been big on this and I tend to agree.

This leads me to believe that club thinks he’s ready to go at AFL level. Perhaps on a wing.

You're right.

It is a bit of a strange selection and I have been big on not taking someone from our reserves side, unless there's a standout at that level.

We did it last year with Mirkov which I didn't have a huge problem with, one I am OK with, but had we done it with two I'd have been a bit disappointed.

I wasn't sure Hayes had been that much of a standout but clearly the club disagrees and I'll back them and Will in 100%.

Yep. He is 100% Carlton now so we support him no matter what.

AFL experienced players who could easily come into the team and play a role for us. Let’s hope they can make a go of it second time around.
There's actually half a chance that both could line up against the druggies next round.....Durdin for Weiters and Hayes for Newnes/Cottrell.

Agree furthermore obviously the recruitment is a reward for effort and sends a positive signal to other prospects that hard work in the VFL could be a pathway to A…

I trust the club now. Didn’t for many years.

There will be reasons for both selected and the 18 month contract from Ballenden stopped all clubs from taking him.
I agree we are making good decisions now.
Even the decision to re-sign Dow for 1 year on face value gives him certainty to try and perform without pressure of a contract negotiation hanging over his head, but it also means we don’t get peanuts in a trade at years end if it hasn’t worked out and he requests a trade, which he might.
I’m also sure there’s some salary cap planning going on with the Hayes selection - a bargain basement replacement for Setters - to make sure we re-sign Harry, Charlie and JSos.

A lot of talk about him challenging for a wing position.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Dow & Setterfield were both trade bait and Hayes soon elevated himself to be our first midfield depth player should any of our fab 5 miss a game.
  • Dow - Looking at what our coaches are trying to build, I don't think they like his lack of defensive running. Voss wasn't exactly glowing in his assessment of Dow in his post-Collingwood presser.
  • Setterfield - Hayes might already be above him in the pecking order based on VFL performances.
  • Carroll - Only a 2nd year player, still developing. Was exposed in the Collingwood game when the pressure went up.
  • Curnow - Injured and likely to retire.
  • Cunners - Always injured.

So really, Hayes could be a very useful depth pick up.
I believe that Williamson should be given a go on the wing, as he is a runner and a great kick who might do better in the open spaces than back in the last line of defence. I don`t know why he hasn`t been tried there as he is athletic enough and can take a mark, but perhaps he doesn`t work hard enough for Vossy to give him a go, but the club could at least try him there.....

Two left footer wingman who have no desire to use their right foot probably wont work. But like the idea of Willo as LOB's backup for 1 wing spot

I think the Durdin selection makes sense, and the Hayes selection makes sense if the club rates him better than Dow, Setters, etc. A ruckman would have given us more options regarding TDK as a forward until Pitto is back as I don’t see Mirkov as an option for a while, but we all support a club, regardless of whether we agree with individual decisions. I hope they both play a lot this year and improve the side.

Hayes is a better players than most Bulldog supporters will tell you. A very solid two-way running wingman.
Absolutely. Was “Bevoed” always played his role (or better) when given opportunity. Seemed very good at keeping width and genuinely playing the wing role. Think of the impact Lipinski has made at Collingwood from similar opportunities at the ‘dogs. Can’t believe some of our narrow supporters, I raised the possibility that he would be a good pick up as a wing option and was berated that he ‘doesn’t play wing”. Utilised more inside recently in our twos, but absolutely a very capable wingman.

To follow up, we are clearly not enamoured by our current wing options leading to the purported Carrigan link pre MSD. Clearly he was considered, with Hayes deemed the better option. Wondering if our brain’s trust are warming to the idea we are already in the premiership mix and prefer the immediate option over the development type.

I still want Kemp and Carroll given the grounding and opportunity to play “outside” as they are/will be AFL quality players sweating on opportunity when our injuries are “under control”. If Kemp is a prospective mid, surely his tank will be in the range to present on a wing. Has the mobility, his height delivers options for link and “get out” plays. Defensive oriented wing just seems right.

Keep Jack as relief ruck at centre bounce and forward till Pitto returns.
One of S. Durdin and Lewis Young, depending on state of game and match ups, to take the ruck duties in defence.

Doesn't he get in trouble too often trying to get back on to his left?
