So it was reported last night that we're into Dan McStay and have been on the phone, and that we're also into Rowan Marshall.

I guess McStay means Harry gets more space and Stringer gets up the griund more.

Marshall is with an eye to Phillips' age and to provide ruck depth and competitiveness between himself Draper and Bryan. If we brought in Marshall, you couldn't blame Bryan for looking elsewhere.

Beware the Marshall interest. This is one of the few times I can genuinely see the use of a club to nudge price.

To start, why are we doing this deal? He's not a dominant key forward, he wants to play as the number 1 ruck. We also have put 3 years into Bryan who looks great and is entering productive years.

McStay is horrendously overrated. If we want McStay we could pick Stewart.

Marshall set to sign on long term at St. Kilda apparently. Good on him.

McStay is a great foil for players like Wright and Jones as a bit of a battle axe but 5 and 6 year deals for a player like that is world gone mad stuff.

Draper having more impact as a forward helps Bryan given Bryan hasn’t really demonstrated the forward craft as yet, they play together when Bryan has another 6 months in the gym.

5/6 years for Dan McStay? Really. He can mcget mc****ed to paraphrase Rodney Rude

McAsey's athleticism is not AFL material.

I don't think we need to be adding another young KPD to our list (FM will be 22 next March) as we already have a bit of a logjam in that part of the ground. Perhaps we can get in on a three way deal that sees Fisher come back to Victoria > Dogs, Francis goes to Adelaide and, I dunno, the Dogs third (pick 38) comes to us.

Didn't know McStay was looking for 5 or 6 years. I'd offer 3, but so would many other clubs. I guess it depends how desperate we are. On one hand the natural development of Jones, Eyre and Baldwin means we have a bit of depth and Jones can be covered. On the other hand, McStay makes our forwardline instantly more potent. Not sure who goes out to accommodate him though.

I don't think we need to look for another ruckman until next year. I'm happy with Flip as a back up, and Draper is finally showing more capacity to mark and goal as you've said.

Agree re: Marshall. Not sure how overrated McStay is though. He's looked pretty damaging when I've seen him.

Apparently a club has come at him with 3 mil over 5 years, which like I said, is crazy areas.

I grow more and more comfortable with our tall stocks with every passing week as Baldwin continues to hit the scoreboard and Stewart demonstrates ability at both ends, there was a time where I thought McStay would be a good add to compliment Wright but not for that cost.

I’d go midfielder if I’m looking at bringing in someone externally.

I really hope we’re not that club but I wouldn’t put it past us

Yep, agree. I'm happy to invest a draft pick on a young tall forward and continue developing Baldwin and Eyre. We're not playing finals next year I don't think, let alone pushing for a flag.

I think we have enough moving pieces to challange for the top 8 in 2023 if we get a good run with injuries.

We've had a good fortnight with 2 strong VFL wins and a good AFL win. This a more accurate reflection of where the list is at and I'm expecting it to continue.

With a list that contains Heppell, Ham, Hurley, Guelfi, Francis, Smith, McDonaugh, Waterman, BZT and Phillips we've got 10 list spots to turn over where development isn't a factor. I would persist with all other first and second year players.

There is scope to bring in some free agents or more seasoned players to guard against injury based collapse of a season again.

It is common enough to think of progression in terms of putting together the premiership list and then working up the ladder.

It's not really how things happen and, in any event, it's not where our focus should be. The next goal is to be good, good enough to play multiple finals.

On point, without having a superstar KPP we have enough of a combination to be competitive, even next year.

Starting in defence, Reid is not going to hold down full back but the combination of Laverde playing 1v1 and Reid zoning off would give us most of what we need. Ridley should be freed to play Heppell's role next year that will add further support. I suspect Brand will be pushing for selection before the end of the year. Stewart can also be used to stand the monsters if things are not working. McBride is getting there too.

Draper is getting closer to genuine number 1 material. This is important because it means we can use Wright as the second ruck and play Stewart forward.

Bryan is entering his productive years. He may well force his way into a best 22 next year. That would give us freedom in relation to the use of Stewart.

Wright, Jones and Stringer are the 3 staples of the forwardline. They're all 2 goal a game players.

The wild card is then Cox. With Durham and Martin coming on and Langford playing his best footy on a wing we could use Cox to sure up either end of the ground.

There are a lot of options without even getting to the un tested players.

Wouldn’t be mad if we did but I personally wouldn’t even bother. I think you commit to the current cohort of young talls for the time being, someone like Eyre has all the attributes and just needs a stack of reps.

The list has far too few midfielders as it is so if anything we need to thin the heard of medium to tall players and not go for more.

The list is flawed and lacks balance particularly around the midfield. But still, the way recruiting has found young gems through the MSD and SSP in Durham, Martin, and hopefully Big Mass, is an awesome boost.

Given how little Reid has played and that Cox is likely going to need a new position with Durham and Martin passing him, we are essentially adding two top 10 picks to the mix. Or at least that's how I am choosing to look at it.
