The more i watched modern AFL, the more i think the concept of zoning is flat out dumb

We need the ball back, lets stand 30m away from our opponent!

We need to stop a goal, lets stand 30m away from our opponent!

Anyone would think that manning up, and standing next to an opponent was something that was very complex and difficult

Maybe there's a reason why man on man is no longer a usable tactic?

Nah, it's all the AFL coaches that are wrong!

Just because everyone is doing something, doesn't make it smart

Man on man is extinct because the players are much more athletic and more tactical and precise with their ball use. Trailing your man by a couple of metres (which is inevitable if you go man on man, because as a defending team you are reacting to how the attacking team moves, and not taking the initiative yourself) is fatal in modern AFL. Any semblance of clean ball use renders man on man completely ineffective because you take your man into space then tear them apart on the transition and you aren't able to even lay a finger on them.

Again, there are bloody obvious reasons why all teams set up the way they do and old-time strategies like 'man on man', putting your plodding key position forward in the goal square all day and 'just kick it!' are no longer dominant. Welcome to professional football.

Dockers finishing the round in sixth and playing the Bulldogs next week. Unfortunately they’ll have easy kills to end their season against us and the giants

Lions need a clean out in the coaches box.

Brisbane are currently making a major play for Clarkson.

They want him to hold out another year and take over in 2024, with Fagan moving into a general management role.

Whether Clarko can go two years without being the centre of the football universe is another matter however.

We would be smashed man on man. We are too slow.

The media would spontaneously combust if Clarkson doesn’t take up a coaching role for another 2 years

1. Do you not ever watch the game and see a zone and think "how tf do you pick out a target in that?"
2. Most professional team ball sports use zones
3. When you play man on man, your opponent just runs away and into space to receive the ball. A zone closes the space down so wherever the ball goes, it's easier to intercept.

So glad we tend to go all the way when we're up. Would hate to be a Brissie supporter right now. Or Port.
Yep for all the gnashing of teeth on here we managed to jag one when the stars aligned.

Since the end of 2000, just four teams have won 12 of the 21 flags in that time. We managed to be one of the other 14 sides that managed to win one of the other 9 - two of them, in fact, out of four Grand Finals - and it's probably a fair reflection of our overall regular season performances in that time.

Brisbane, Port, Freo, GWS have none from their periods of dominance recently. Collingwood circa 2010 only got one during their ultra-dominant spell - same as Essendon circa 2000.

No GF appearances - North, Gold Coast, Carlton

We haven’t cashed in like the 4 dynasty teams have, but other than perhaps Sydney we’re the only side to have won a flag, dropped and come back to win another with a completely separate side. We’re the only multiple flag winning side without a dual premiership player

Drew Banfield played in 1994 and 2006 if you want to get nitpicky.

But yes, good post which sort of helps reinforce that we are a spoiled lot on occasion here.
