If Dev just wants to go home, that's fine. But if it is driven by his lack of senior opportunities, as suspected, we could and should have done better with him. Can see a few frustrating years ahead watching him tear it up for another team.

but Dev will struggle to lock down an inside mid spot IF we recruit a much needed mid for next year, and then there is Ashcroft. On top of that the midfield coach has stated the desire for Cam (mistake, should be deep forward) and Bailey and Clug to spend more time in the midfield. Life will go on when Dev leaves, but I wished we kept him.
Are we prepared to have a hard conversation with Lyons, similar to Witho.
Dev has only shown glimpses but those glimpses have IMHO been first class.Like others here I believe that he needs a solid set of games to cement a spot. The "vibe" seems to be that he is gonski

Well that’s garbage then. There is no reason why he shouldn’t have been given more games. You can clearly see he is the type that just needs senior exposure.

Spare me the needing to barge the door down in the seconds as well.
Why…. Why is it garbage…. Who should be playing in the 2s instead of Dev? He is developing his game…. It does not hurt to do that in the twos. Not that I think it’s the case but we have been a top 4 team the last few years… you don’t do that by constantly playing kids… good clubs make them earn their spot

Lyons.

Jarryd by the length of the straight.

Edit. Beaten already.

If things came to pass that our inside midfield rotation was Neale, Ashcroft, Dev and one other (a trade and/or a mix of Clug, Cam etc) I would be fine with that. They all have enough talent and toughness - except they need better setup in the centre. Our problems stem from lack of speed and lack of two way running not lack of ability.

We can’t forget that Dev has been hampered by a few niggling injuries this year.
Back and a shoulder more recently.
Which may have been why he spent a bit more time in the forward line earlier in the year. To give him a lesser role to get over those niggles.
He may have been given a run earlier in the year if it weren’t for those little set backs.

Okay…. I can understand that… Lyons output over the last few years has been unreal for what we paid for him. He had earned the right to try to recapture his form. Do a quick stat comparison of beast at vfl vs AFL level and then compare dev and Lyons. Hindsight might suggest he would be better long term…. But spending bulk mins playing midfield in the twos… which is designed for players to develop their game… is an excellent start

We play the least amount of young players out of the top 9, equal with Geelong.

Melbourne play twice as many young players as we do.

What people are talking about here is replacing the underperforming senior players with the best of our youth.

There’s no way known that Lyons deserved to hold his spot all season.

Each of our tall defenders have been out of form for extended periods at one time or another this year.

You need to pump senior games in to young players for them to be ready come finals.

You know when you get those games in to the kids. During the fevking season.

I’ve been harping on this for two years now, and finally some other fans here are buying in to it.

It’s genuinely not hard to see where we’re at, and where we need to improve, looking one, two, three seasons ahead.

I want to win a flag as much as anyone, but this team, the way they’ve played all season aren’t within cooee.

Well I hope you were sticking up for the selection of Tunstill against Melbourne because that has been constantly criticised on here. We obviously made the choice to dance with the one that brung ya rather than treating this year as a development year and I didn't see anyone whinging about that decision at the beginning of the season.

We are in a completely different era with young people, in society generally, I know I am stereotyping. Also the fact that AFL is a legitimate career and unlike the 80's and even early 90's when players had other employment and were arguably prepared to bide their time and play in the 2's, earning capacity is now a consideration, with the average AFL career around 7 years. More time in the 2's = less $ in most cases.
As you have stated contracted to a top 4 team
IMO selection slant towards playing senior 'seasonal' players because we are...were, in the premiership 'window'
WA kid and family probably still resides there.
Aschcroft coming

Can't blame him IF he seeks a release.

So if we pumped games into kids this year to prepare them for finals… which we likely would have missed… would Ashcroft have committed?

Secondly…. What if the young players aren’t up to it… why not see how they handle a lower division better… also, what to you define as a ‘young player’? Melbourne didn’t have anyone with under 45 games experience on Friday…

There is a big difference in throwing an inside mid (tunstills main position) at 18years old in his first season on the wing in the seniors against probably the hardest wingman (Langdon) in the game to play against, compared with replacing Lyons with a 21year old inside mid with 3 pre seasons under his belt.

Melbourne finished second last and missed finals in 2019 and 2020. Of course they have started more young players, they’ve had better draft picks.

I suspect that next year we will magically start more young players when with earlier selections.

I am probably being semantic here but I dont regard Robertson as a kid anymore. Throwing the kids in means them having to play against the better players in the comp. No getting around that.

Weird that people can criticize the club for developing Robertson's forward craft yet compliment Robertson for becoming a damaging mid this year by hitting the scoreboard.

I'd have liked him to play more games this year, but it's not as simple as "drop Lyons" and anyone who thinks it is is kidding themselves. You don't just drop a best 22 player because he's gone from being a key cog midfielder to a role player. Personally, I think he's close to cooked and we should move past him next year, but it is understandable why he has played this year.

Matho v Robertson was the big one and it took Mathos incredible form + a poorly timed shoulder injury to keep Robertson out.

IMO Robertson will be locked in our best 22 next year and will be a much more complete player BECAUSE of the development afforded to him in the VFL.

Please, give yourself credit - its been at least 4 years of whinging and moaning about us winning games and not having high draft picks ;)

we had way too many players go missing this year, they all know they not be dropped.
We rarely give anyone a game unless one of the Fav are injured. Matho was even overlooked for the Bombers match.

Our team Round 1

Team Friday night
Not too many differences
Only reason Adams and AhChee was out as they both concussed
Cockatoo and Fort dropped for Coleman and Hipwood both not available round 1
Matho in for Robbo
If AhChee played Prior been dropped.
So who broke through this year from our draftees into the 22.
no one
