Because he's nearly 8 years older and has baggage.
However he's top 10 on out list, and Georgiadis isn't even best 22... the baggage doesn't count if they're putting a 4yr contract in front of him. Rioli is in his prime years. Geogiadis might not even be an AFL best -22 AFL player.

Backwards thinking here?

Ah well, the writing was on the wall.
Let’s just get something good back and move on.
We didn’t turn over players in the past few years when we had the chance so something had to give and I think it’s for the best.

Nisbett quote “Junior has made his decision and while he has indicated Port is his preferred destination we will work to get the best outcome for our club."
Here comes a round 4 pick.
“We could not have done any more to support Junior since his infraction in 2019,” CEO Trevor Nisbett said. “We facilitated his appeal and subsequent return to football, so this decision is ‘bitterly disappointing.’

As disappointing as it is, he can smoke pot on Port’s watch. Let’s hope we don’t get reamed at the trade table and get a 3rd rounder.

Come on mate, Georgiades played 19 games this year.
That's pretty much in their best side.

Willie might be in his prime years age wise, but to see he looked out of shape and not really interested.
Fitness is a different issue to talent - our whole bl00dy team was unfit all year!

Seriously, Rioli is/was top 10 on our list. Georgiadis would be ~20 on their list. A couple of 3 goal games, a couple of games 8+ marks this season. 2nd round pick at best. Jake Watermans's third season looks more impressive than MG's last year.

The Port board seem unanimous in wanting pick 2 and something more involved in Georgiades, without anything going back the other way.

On what planet do they think he is worth that much? Maybe just pick 2 I can understand (even if I don't agree with it) but they appear adamant in ruling out dealing with their own pick 9 too. Not even the most incompetent recruiting staff would do say pick 2 and Rioli for Georgiades.
Wait. They are valuing georgiades higher than Rioli? As in they want Rioli and pick 2 for him?

Regardless of the decision, I'm glad a decision has been made. This undecided, dick-around smegfest hasn't been good for anyone.

So he definitely wants to go.
All that's left is to get the best deal we can.

Given Port think he is worth a 4 year, apparently good dollar deal, then I think we go for either the Amon compo if it is mid second round or better, or the 2023 2nd.

Rioli is worth a second rounder... how about we just take that and head to the draft with as many early picks as we can? Being creative hasn't always helped us historically and I wouldn't trust our guys to not pay $25k for a chinese meal.

4 picks under 30 has to net one weapon, one serviceable midfielder and 2 flops on averages right? Then we go again and again over the next few years and top up later.

I think he owed the club but he’s also entitled to seek the best financial deal for his future and you can’t force someone to be happy.

Worst case scenario for us would have been for Rioli to decide to stay out of obligation then give us a couple of years of indifferent footy because he wasn’t settled/happy in Perth.

It’ll be sad to see him go as he was one of, if not my favourite, eagles to watch and it’ll hurt watching him tear it up for Port

Assuming the Amon compo is a 2nd round pick (which would be 27 atm) that would be fair, as would their future 2nd.

If the Amon compo is an end of first (19) then I think we’d need to add 38 to Rioli to make if fair. This would be my preferred result as it would give us 2,19,21,27 to take to the draft. (Picks 20 and 26 pushed back one spot in this scenario)

Depends on course on how campaignerish Port want to be

I feel like some of the “bitter disappointment” is just because they’ve been pulled out of hibernation mode and forced into acknowledging that the trade period is coming up. But still, pretty strong words.
