The discussion around whether this would warrant criminal charges should the allegations be found to be true have got me thinking about how the AFL sometimes seems to be above the law, and governs itself in a way.

How come Barry Hall can swing a knockout punch to a bloke completely unaware, with thousands of people watching, undeniable video evidence, yet the result is he just misses a few games of footy. But if I went down Hindley Street Saturday night and did the exact same thing, I'd probably be in jail by Monday.

Where does the line get drawn?

Hawks will only get a slap on the wrist as well. Some donation to an indigenous charity or two (diverting money from their pokies mountains of cash from other groups they screw over, how poetic) and 'Everyone involved is no longer here, so that's it!'.

Like others have said I bet the expectation that someone was about to spill lead to them self-reporting. Even if it was done without that, how 'surprising' it just happens to be now whilst Clarkson has just been appointed to North, not whilst he was at the club. What a coincidence!

If the AFL wasn't a closed shop, that tries to bury everything, then as a minimum:
  • Clarkson and Fagan would be banned from coaching at any level for at least 5 years
  • Burt likewise out the system
  • Hawthorn docked draft picks and a massive fine for bringing the game into disrepute
  • Hawthorn made to pay significant compensation to all the victims (by this I mean both the players and their partners/ex-partners)
  • All indigenous players at Hawks having the option to have their contracts shredded and go into the draft
  • Appointment of indigenous support staff to the Hawks, appointed by the AFL and answerable to the AFL, but paid for by Hawthorn

I'm sure Gil 'the man with no spine', will put out a meaningless 'We're disappointed, we love our indigenous players!' statement, but as usual, run 100 miles away from actually taking real action.

The AFLPA’s response is comical, literally torn from a Roy & HG script. “We need an independent, roots and all probe!”

The AFL Players Association chief executive Paul Marsh has released a statement.

“The AFL Players’ Association is extremely concerned about the details of the report relating to player and partner experiences while at the Hawthorn Football Club.

“We have spoken to the AFL and communicated our expectations that an independent investigation must be conducted. It should also be well-resourced and wide-ranging in scope.

“In the meantime, the affected players and partners will continue to have the full support of the AFLPA through our various programs and services. These services will also be reinforced to all members of the AFLPA.”

Just penalise the third man up. Nominating takes too long.
Then who do you need to watch to make sure isn't being blocked? Who do you need to watch to make sure they are keeping the one metre apart? There are different sets of rules for rucks and other players at ball ups. Without nominating how do you tell who is who?

The much derided ‘important to be a good person’ mantra of this club is no doubt part of a indirect response to toxic footy cultures like this.

Dark day for football.
Perhaps but there's no solid evidence we aren't great either. I mean we aren't ****ing horrendously toxic violating human rights and common decency, but there's definitely cliques running wild.

These accusations go way beyond racist comments, they amount to social engineering and come from multiple sources. Dead in the water.
There's every chance more details will come out about just how bad an influence these family members were but regardless there are no excuses.

Luke Hodge doing the rounds on SEN about how he didn’t know anything about it and he never experienced anything like it with his young family.

Why do you think that might be, Luke?
Did he say that he's a better father and husband?

I doubt Sean Burgoyne endured what the complainants have alleged happened to them and their families at the dawks, as a very experienced player married to the daughter of a famous footballer who Clarkson would have known well during his time at Alberton he should have been isolated from that, and as reported it appears it was the younger and potentially more vulnerable individuals who were specifically targeted (standard bullying), whether he knew about it, and/or how discriminating the situation is alleged to have been is the unknown.

Unless you're Port Adelaide everyone knows who is rucking for each team. Typically they're the lumbering big blokes.

Hinkley is not a good person and he basically owns the club, so.

If you scratch below the surface there would be plenty of horrible shit that happens here. Wingard said not long ago that the club buried his issues w racism on social media.

There is always two sides to a story, but I’d have thought any discussions like this would be with the club pyschologist and initiated by the concerned person, not by coaches.

Pretty hard to come back from this reputation wise for the staff members.
