I think ours was more shocking as there'd simply never been a story quite so big at the time. IMO this is worse because it's not 'just' about sports performance, but reaching deeply in to people's personal lives, particularly vulnerable young people's personal lives. That goes well beyond the level of Dank et al jabbing players with some substances that might or might not have been performance enhancing.

I agree, I just think we as supporters didn’t get the same level of consideration as being shown today.

I'm one for wanting to find a joke or humour in difficult situations. It's often my coping mechanism.

There is not a single thing in this situation that warrants anything but a sombre recognition of how far away we are as a society from where we need to be in general, but especially when it comes to the treatment of First People.

They need to be heard, understood and respected in this story and in many others.

I'm not going to judge how others choose to handle the news, but I cannot feel anything but sincere distress for those involved.
I think it depends on where the humour is directed. If you joking about the players themselves, that's ****en pathetic, but if you are targeting the perpetrators and the organisation over their horrible actions, have at it I say.

Also, we were kicked out of the finals for less. I don't see how Hawthorn aren't stripped of their 3peat.
Not a chance that happens.
We tried to gain an unfair advantage, so that advantage was neutralised through draft penalties and being deemed to finish 9th.

What seems to have happened here is unlikely to fall back on Hawthorn as an organisation unless it's found to be club sanctioned and systemic (which depends on a whole lot of associated details we don't have), which would likely lead to hefty fines. (edit: in particular where the AFL is concerned. bullying and anti-discrimination laws will see other bodies get involved fairly quickly I would imagine, and they may have other things to say about the club's duty of care)

The culpability on the named individuals is much higher though, because it's not negligence in terms of the duty of care towards our players on a human level, it's allegedly deliberate and systematic traumatisation and discrimination. They could and probably should be deregistered, not just fined or suspended.

listening to Gil it would have been nice to afford the same non disclosure of information until the investigation is over when the Saga occurred, but in this case 100% agree. I do not think the players affected should ever be disclosed unless they choose to do so.
Its a terrible and disgusting, saddening and anger inducing thing that has happened and should never happen again. You cant even begin to imagine how this will/has psychologically scarred these players, wives/partners and families for life. I hope they can all heal from it.
Bet he wishes he finished up as CEO a bit sooner

Sooner or later the accused parties will have to respond. You can't just let accusations like that lie. I imagine lawyers are furiously charging hours for carefully crafted sympathetic statements of denial.

Apparently Caro said they'd been contacted > 24 hours ago for comment and have provided nothing before the article went to air.

Well I assume the AFL would have preferred to have handled the entire thing without it every becoming public, the same thing would have happened in our situation had the AFL been in control of it.
Would imagine FWA, AFLPA, lawyers, courts, and potentially the federal government may come into it as well. No ASADA, WADA or CAS, but still not something the AFL will necessarily have full control of.

In light of this, I also think we need to reflect internally on our own situation. We've lost Walla and Mozzie in the last couple of years much too early.

I'm not sure Mosquito had much to do with anything of this nature tbf, but I also think we've dropped the ball with our investment in to Indigenous programmes.

I imagine that’s part of the review

Most hawthorn supporters are saddened and angered by their club from reading the main board. However when it comes to a sanction a lot say that they should only be punished financially for something that happened in the past. FU tell that to Jobe they happily took away his medal, kicking us out of finals. They should have the book thrown at them. They should lose their premierships. They should be facing financial and draft sanctions because of the governance, let alone legal action for those players affected in the court system not the AFL. The club should dissolve and be put back into the pool, then we can open a new team in Tas.

Didn't Walla also say that he loved the club when announcing his retirement? Not the sort of thing you'd think he'd say if the club had wronged him.

Mosquito is only relevant in that the decision by Hawthorn not to match the bid on him is now almost certainly not football related.

Yes it didn’t work out at Essendon but I wouldn’t really say that’s relevant here beyond reviewing the way it happened and making sure they are in line with best practise, which is something we should be constantly doing anyway.

Im surprised the pies got by without a disrepute charge. Hawks might be in the same bucket. but will see.

tbh, club sanctions shouldn't even be on the AFL's radar yet. If they're thinking about the damage to the brand, they need to step down.
Address this and do it properly.
