I wish both Geelong and the Swans could lose tomorrow, but sadly there has to be a winner.

I hate the Swans, but hate Scott, Dangerflog and Duckwood more and I would love another choke. In reality, I just want the game done and to get on with summer, so if the flag is won by Sydney we here in Melbourne hear about it tomorrow then never again. Geelong will be insufferable.

I live in the outer, outer west (Geelong) and I was behind them I have to admit in the 2007 finals, by mid 2008 having smoko every day with keen footy fans, I was not just done with them but totally off them.

Will spare a thought for those of us who live in Greater Geelong

I don’t want to say ‘I don’t believe it’ but there has to be more to the story. I can’t see a scenario where someone walks up to a lifeguard to tell them a black person holding their child is making their grandkid uncomfortable…and the lifeguard is equally racist and finds in their favour.
I can.

And I don’t know what the individual said to the lifeguard but I can believe it 1000%.

Having a brown wife I have experienced things I had no idea existed previously. And you assume people would never act like that. Well they do.

Anyone know the terms of reference or the scope for the AFL’s enquiry? Is it just the Hawthorn report? Can it make more wide ranging recommendations?

Betts and others have been pushing for a league-wide investigation and an opportunity for “truth-telling”. Or for every club to have their own review similar to Hawthorn’s.

The implication is that there will be similar stories to be told wherever you look. Maybe not all as damning as the Hawthorn Report but in aggregate pretty awful.

McLachlan may now be caught between wishing it away (Boy’s Club solution, sweeping it under the carpet, staying stoical in the media) and being concerned that there will be a succession of such stories emerging from different clubs which does ongoing damage to the AFL brand and to his own legacy. He could pre-empt that prospect with a comprehensive truth-telling but does he have the will, so close to his departure? My guess is probably not, and that his successor will have to deal with the wider issue (just like he had to deal with the Essendon doping scandal which emerged as Demetriou was leaving).

A lot will depend on the findings and recommendations of the current four person review. Hence the terms of reference are important. It does buy him some time during which he doesn’t have to say much at all in public.

If the Cats win, I hope Sydney loses the free kicks by a substantial margin, eg 25 - 7.
That will give them a whole new whinging frame of reference.

If the Swans win, I hope they win the free kicks by a substantial margin, eg 25 - 7.
Then it will be fun watching them try to convince everyone else that it wasn't rigged.

Either way, it'll be a win for us! ;)

Yes! Either way, go the umps! Show us how unprofessional you all are. 😂

I’m sorry to hear that. I know I am commenting from a viewpoint of very limited experience.

I worked with a Black South African lad here in Melbourne. We did the same job as service technicians and yet he had to put up with so much crap that I never encounter. On numerous occasions he would arrive at a client’s house and either be denied entry or treated with hostility.

It’s absolutely disgraceful and I am not denying that racism is all too present in our society. However…I would just like to know more about this particular story from Betts before I can accept it.

I agree with Betts and you. Each team needs to do this. The AFL should push it through. But you are right. The AFL will not want to, and the clubs won't want to now either.

It Will take strong leadership and the will to do whats right over whats good for the rand, which I think isn't there.

I am very interested to see what comes out about Bevo and this. I do really hope he wasn't involved.

I came across this article from 2013 where some Hawks people are talking about him. Behind the scenes, Hawks find their coaching bedrock

Fagan told AFL.com.au.

"What I really love about him is he is strong on his opinions. He doesn't always offer up what the group-think is. He sometimes thinks in an alternative manner and that is good for the group."

"Former committee member Blair Hutchinson sums up what many at that club think of Beveridge: "He is a good man and has a good feel for people and was very inclusive."" And

"He is a wonderful teacher of people," former club president Matt Beasley said. "He does not discriminate against anyone. In his mind the least skilled player is as important to his team structure as the talented match winners are."

Living in Geelong it’s been a pretty timid atmosphere here. Few crappy flags out and about, sums up the supporter base.

Say what you want about Selwood, but him running out of the ground with Ablett’s little boy tomorrow is a really nice gesture
Apart from his legendary knack of ducking into a tackle to draw the free I don't mind Selwood too much (we have our own culprits at that anyway). In fact I admire him more than nearly anyone else on the Cats list.

He typifies the tough no-nonsense take-no-prisoners mentality that we've been screaming out for and we'd love him for that if he was on our list. Gun player for his entire career.

I've no idea what the Ablett kid thing is all about but it seems he's pretty decent bloke off the field too.

Anyway, Go Swannies!

Betts has been subjected to some pretty cruel and obviously racist stuff (ie the banana incident with a Port supporter and some hideous social media incidents).

I take him at his word that he still experiences racism in day to day life periodically. Might be sometimes he defaults to assuming racism when someone is just being a campaigner.
Or like Goodes that everything is racist. Toby Greene gets bio’s for his on field indiscretions (being nice) yet Goodes who used his elbows more than most for drive byes took them
All as a racist slur.
I’m sure both copped more than their fair share of racism but I agree that there’s a bit more to these stories.
I’ve seen one of the biggest indigenous names in AFL get into strife. Not racist but due to hitting on attached women, mouthing off and being pushed as a fart.

Something just seems a bit confusing with the Hawks mess. I’m struggling to believe a well respected indigenous Hawk in Burgoyne wouldn’t have been sought out for advice from any of these parties. He claims to be shocked and know nothing.
I’m thinking the end result will be that a bigger can of worms has been opened up. Wonder what Matt Rendell is thinking of all this

Good, balancing post. A reminder of the C'wood review. McGuire completely blindsided.

Well, here we are on the morning of the Grand Final.
Since 2016, I've been quite ambivalent about the day. Prior to that, I used to get quite annoyed that we never got there but I ended up getting into it.
As for this year, I hope Sydney wins. They play a very hard style and are very defensive at both ends of the ground. Geelong defenders are going to earn every possession. The one question over Sydney is can they keep up that game plan for the whole four quarters?
Seeing Dangerfield and Cameron, especially Cameron, receiving a Premiership medal will make me dry retch.
