Why is everyone so keen to drop Murphy from our best 22?
His growth this year was huge. Reminds me a lot of Ben Reid albeit not as good obviously.

Edit: it's also laughable that Frampton is the one tipped to replace him.... the player that was about to be delisted by Adelaide and almost certainly, never actually sited by the poster.

I think team balance with Frampton height is the driver for that discussion.

People talking about Frampton ahead of Murphy. This may be blasphemy but based on what I saw in the finals. We may have both in with Jeremy Howe out. I think Father Time has caught up with him.

I mean given our depth issue would recruiting for depth for one season as we get settled fully erasing the trauma of the previous regime be the worst thing in the world?

I personally have no issue with a starting 22 that looks like this with depth in important spots. The following assumes all the rumoured players linked ot us get here:

Back: Murphy McStay Quaynor Depth: Frampton, Dean, Howe
H Back: Noble Moore Murphy
Mid: Daicos Mitchell Daicos Depth: Carmichel, Fiorini, McRae, McInnes, Bianco, Sidebottom
H Forward McCreery Krueger Hill
Forward Ginnivan Mihocek Johnson Depth: Cox, Hoskin-Elliott
Ruck Cameron De Goey Pendlebury
Int: Elliott, Maynard, Adams, Crisp

Now obviously, this is a mix of stuff I'd like combined with stuff I expect, and regardless of where you personally see those names, it's clear we're trying to build some genuine depth in key roles that we missed this year
Thought dean has inside running at fb than Mcstay since l believe mcstay will play forward

Closer to a season and a half. He went back during 2021. Thats a fairly long time for an 8 season veteran to adapt to a new role. We should be looking at him as purely depth more than that will be a big bonus but great.
Stop rationally pointing out a 25yo, 2 club player, traded previously for a fourth round selection and then playing 21 games in 3 years for his new club, is not gonna be an AA full back.

Seriously, the guy wants to play for Collingwood? It should be he want to remain in the AFL, he is prime delisting material.

Seems G Wright tends to have trades set up and ready to go to start the period. Very different to our previous guys who tended to get the trade done in the last few minutes resulting in us being bent over with no time to arrange an alternative.
You get the impression that the professionals are in charge of our trading and recruiting again.Thank god for that.

Is it not possible to live in Geelong and play for a Melbourne team?
Every team has their own little advantages. We get the Anzac game every year and some would love that idea. Others want a more quiet life in Geelong. The truth is, Geelong have been one of the best run clubs of the last 20 years and have only had 2 big come home recruits in Danger and Cameron. Majority of their team is made up of amazing drafting. People will discredit that out of jealousy.

100% agree

But to be fair to Howe, he looked far better when not playing outside his weight division. So I'd be happy to see him get one last year with regular senior selection not having to play on a key forward

It's a fair point. We're exaggerating how much their last 20 years have been built on them drawing players. They've had a couple of great recruits, but have also lost Ablett, and Egan and a couple of others during that time.

Their fitness crew have been amazing, as well as the drafting. Their player longevity has been awesome. Trav Cloke is only one year older than Hawkins and Ben Reid is one year younger than him. We wouldn't have had any KPP issues at all if we had've got the longevity out of Cloke and Reid that they've got out of their blokes.

Because Murphy should be forcing Howe out, which honestly he should be doing

As an actual defender, Murphy was better than Howe this season. Even on taller opponents

So if Moore/Maynard/Quaynor etc are freed up somewhat by the arrival of a second tall, then Howe becomes kinda superfluous at his age
If Murphy pushes Howe out then I'm happy, it means he's improved again, good signs going forward. I'd have Howe ahead at this stage, but we'll see.

We'll start the year how we finished (as long as the preseason goes well). Frampton or Dean will need to do well in the VFL before they get near the side.

I mean, maybe it's possible Frampton will be tried as a forward/ruck?

At 200cm and around 100kg, he seems to have the physical attributes to play that role.

With McStay to play down back and Dean as depth

Checkers has been forced to play above his size so if Kruger, Frampton and Checkers/Johnson play as the bigger trio alongside Hill, McCreery and Ginni as the smalls?
He played that role at Port. He wasn't very good.

The only time he's looked like a half decent footballer is as a defender.

Maybe it’s time to release Maynard to the middle or IQ to the wing?

Imagine IQ bursting through the midfield and kicking goals.

We could also move Sidebottom into the forward line too

I dont think Quaynor is good enough in traffic to be a midfielder. Brilliant one on one and with the ball out in space he is pretty good, great and running the lines and overhead marking. Plenty to work with, but he is a potential AA defender in the making. As for Maynard, he is already an AA defender. He gets lost in the midfield if he is there too long. No need to disrupt our one wood. Our defence is amazing because of Quaynor and Maynard.

I understand that line of thinking obviously, but given Maynard's best game of his career to date is a tagging role on Oliver in the midfield, I"m happy for him to evolve to become a lock down midfielder with the defensive depth we have coming in

And the King brothers, sell them the idea of CHF and FF together. I’m sure they will say yes and we have the means to get the trades done.
The King brothers will take unders to play together - so we should be able to get both of them cheaply.

I am happy for you to give me both barrels. I dont have anything against the bloke but we dont have a magic wand, he has had a long AFL career already without locking a spot so to think he slots straight into our 22 is optimistic. Don't see why you wouldnt be more optimistic about Kelly who has similar attributes but is younger and had much less chance to prove himself. Dean likewise, who would be the one I think can most likely make the jump to AFL. There is an element of the shiny new toy about Frampton but he aint new really

Kelly has shown nothing at either end of the ground… McMahon was a better prospect going forward

Dean I’m hopeful on… but at 195cm and 90-93kg I doubt he has the size to hold down full back at afl level going forward

Frampton at 201cm and 99kg is closer to Jordan Roughead size and therefore a more likely longer term full back than Dean
