MVP 2022 Nick "426" Smith Memorial Trophy Leader-Board | Oliver gets his long-awaited 2nd

With our Round 1 Grand Final rematch done and the voting for it ending midway through the rest of the game, about time I put this up.
It's the 2022 edition of the Melbourne Board's MVP main thread; the Nick "426" Smith Memorial Trophy. Now that we have something new in the trophy cabinet that isn't from the reserves or that weird AFLX era of dominance, it will be interesting to see which players rise or fall as we try to maintain our No.1 spot. Petracca has been doing very well to win the last two 426 trophies but Oliver is never too far behind having finished Top 3 in this every year since 2017 and winning everything that wasn't this last year. The voting and points system is still what it has been, I just hope that the voting turnout continues to grow off the back of a premiership.

6 rounds in and we have back-to-back seasons of a defender being in front a quarter-way into the H&A season.

Steven May is also the first player to have 2 BOG performances, with Oliver and Petracca the only others within a game of the lead right now. Langdon was a part of the leading pack, was even at the front after Round 4, but know is outside the main 3 but with a good gap in front of Gawn, Bowey and Harmes.

Let's compare May's start to the season with other seasons.

Now that streak has finished, let's look at who got into the points. A winning streak like this seems to happen only once a decade or so, so there hasn't been too many opportunities to analyse such a long run.

Here's the 17 game streak.
1654150401433.png

If we compare that to the 17-game 2020 season, and the first 17 games of every other season, we can see that Petracca's score of 101.5 is pretty high for 17 games, with 14.5 points over next best Oliver and May the best of the rest. The ruckmen duo of Gawn and Jackson swap positions compared to 2021 and Langdon gets a boost from his 2022 form.

2021 Top 10 finishers Lever, Salem and McDonald finish outside the Top 10 for the streak due to lack of form or injury giving Brown, Brayshaw and Pickett the spotlight here, with only Viney and Fritsch being the difference between this season's Top 10 and this.

Plenty more games left in the season.

Oliver looking like running away with it. Was his first or second half of the season better last year?

Also looking like he could win back to back AFLCA awards. Only polled two in the loss to Freo but still five votes ahead of Neale in second place.

Would be I believe the only player to win it twice other than GAJ (who won three in a row). Won his first in his sixth season like GAJ too (but one year older).

If you go by Brownlow votes, his first half. 20 votes up to round 11, then 11 votes in the remaining 11 rounds. Although the second half of the season also had more losses... it's easier to in the AFLCA than the Brownlow to still poll when you lose.

The 426 also reflects this. Last year Oliver had 64 points and a 7 point lead after Round 12 but over the last 13 games scored 49 points, 2nd most but 2 games behind Petracca with 4 others within a game of Oliver.

This year has been Oliver's highest scoring season up to Round 17 with 92, 1 point more than his 2018 season but that doesn't mean anything. His winning season of 2017 is only his 4th highest scoring season (3rd excluding finals) but Oliver does have a good lead and has a good record when scoring in the last 6 rounds.

I find the results from 2003 quite revealing

With 2-4 games left in the season, there's 3 people who can still win. Now, it isn't a surprise to some that the race for the 426 is close as it's a sign that the team has a group of contributors playing at their best as opposed to just one guy bringing their A-game for the season. What I've noticed, however, is that the finals plays a bigger part in who wins the 426. Only twice out of 6 finals campaigns has the person leading into finals kept top spot. Let's have a look at those 6 season;

2002: 2 finals; EF win v NM, SF loss to Adel.
In the first completed Best and Fairest on the Melbourne Board, David Neitz was winning with 17 points under the 3-2-1 system. Neitz wouldn't score in either of the 2 finals while 3rd placed Adem Yze would score 5 points to win on 20. 2nd placed Travis Johnstone would also grab a Best-On-Ground to almost win it himself.

2004: 1 final; EF loss to Ess.
The first season of the 2nd attempt at having a Melbourne Board Best on Fairest on here, Jeff White was leading on 22 points with a 1 point margin over Adem Yze. Again, the leader would fail to score in the only final as another Yze BOG would give him his 2nd 426.

2005: 1 final; EF loss to Geel.
In an even closer race into finals, Travis Johnstone was leading with 23 points, half a point ahead of Brent Moloney. Once again, for the 2nd year running, the leader wouldn't score in the lone final while the person in 2nd would be voted Best-on-Ground to get the win. A second 2nd-place finish for Johnstone in a finals year he was in touch of winning.

2006: 2 finals; EF win v StK, SF loss to Frem.
Making a 3rd straight Elimination Final, Brock McLean was the leader with 41 points using the 5-4-3-2-1 system. Breaking from tradition though, McLean would be one getting the most points in the 2 finals games, getting 9 points and widening the winning margin from 2 to 10 points. While 2nd placed James McDonald and 3rd placed Cameron Bruce would score points in the Elimination Final, neither would trouble for the lead in the Semi.

2018: 3 finals; EF win v Geel, SF win v Haw, PF loss to WC.
After a long hiatus, a return to finals under the current 10-9-8-7-6 system almost saw scores tied at the start. With 2 games to go, Max Gawn and Clayton Oliver were tied on 121 points apiece. Gawn then killed the contest somewhat by scoring 16 points in the last 2 H&A games before something unprecedented happened where both the chaser and chasee failed to score until Oliver got within touching distance but in the losing game. Jack Viney was the only person to score in all 3 finals to get him into the Top 10.

2021: 3 finals; QF win v Bris, PF win v Geel, GF win v Foot.
Now for the recap on last year. After a Home and Away season all of us had only dreamt of, Clayton Oliver was in the lead with 103 points. He had a lead of 11 points over Christian Petracca and was the form player coming into finals. A BOG in the first final should've given Oliver a confirmed 2nd 426 win, however it was not to be. Oliver would fail to score in the last 2 finals while Petracca would score a massive 28 points, including BOG in the Grand Final, to get Back-to-Back 426 wins.

Is it surprising that the highest scorer in the finals ends up the overall winner? On paper, no. Is it surprising that, half the time, the highest scorer in the finals doesn't win any of the other pointless awards I've retroactively shoehorned in? Yes and no, depending on how even the race is. Is it surprising that the highest scorer in the finals is almost never the highest scorer over the Home and Away season? It is a little, but finals have always been considered a separate kettle of fish. Will the highest scorer in these finals end up the overall winner this year? Let's see who shows up first...

Oh and if you know of any way of getting more people to vote more consistently in the threads, please let me know. I'm at a loss as to why only 6 people voted in the last round after what was one of our best H&A games this year.

Well, now that the remaining season has been shortened from 2-3 games to over, it can announced that the winner of the 2022 426 is...

CLAYTON OLIVER
1662787505041.png

His 9 points in the Qualifying Final gave him the 1-game lead he needed to win, though I do wish this announcement was going to be made in 2 weeks. This makes this his second win in the 426 as well as his 6th straight podium finish.

I'll go more in depth with it on Tuesday along with the Top 10, voting is still up for the Semi Final so do keep the votes coming in for this week.

2022, where we'd seemingly dominated the first half, then the opposition would start trying before the break and we'd find ourselves fighting an uphill battle while having the higher ground... and the games themselves (specifically the losses) were kinda like that as well. Despite it being one of the best seasons Melbourne has had in the 21st Century on paper, a fair few people on this board were disappointed in how it did turn out. Especially how 7 of our 8 losses had the exact same storyline. There's was, however, one positive to come out of this season...

1663997194789.png

Yeah, okay, Clayton Oliver won something else, not anything groundbreaking right? Except the 426 seems to be the hardest thing for Oliver to win. Since his breakout season in 2017 when he first won the 426, Oliver started racking up podium finishes and being within touching distance of another win without ever doing so. Like a bridesmaid that's never the bride except they were the bride first, or like Robbie Flower winning club awards in the 80s. And he deserves too, Oliver would be one of few players, maybe even the only player, that you couldn't find fault with this season (or at least have the least to grumble about). One of the players that kept Oliver away from that elusive second 426 the last couple of years was Chrisitan Petracca. This year Petracca was as not being as good as he has been over that period and the stats support that. Looking at the 426 results, Petracca scored less points in 2022 compared to 2020 with 7 more games and wouldn't be able to bridge the gap to his 2021 total in just 1 game. Petracca did have 1 thing over Oliver, in the 13 games Petracca scored in, he out-voted Oliver in 12 of them. That is half of the season's games where Petracca was seen as the better player. But that's not how you win this award and he'll just have to put up a 3rd consecutive podium finish.

Now, one could say Angus Brayshaw is unlucky to have finished 3rd as he was, for most of the season, the team's best defender in what was seen as the League's best Defense. In fact, Brayshaw was in the box seat before the last round to take an upset victory after dominating from Rounds 8 to 22. While we could discuss his move back into the midfield being his downfall in just the space of 3 games, hopefully he finds his way back to the half-back line considering he almost took the most unlikely of 426 victories from there and surely someone at the club recognises that (hypothetical contract agreements not-with-standing). Another player that was doing well at the same time as Brayshaw was Jack Viney. Mid-season, Viney was having a mid-career revival having scored his most points in a season since 2016. Which is interesting since he didn't score any points until Round 9. His rise up the leaderboard has been a bit under the radar with what Viney has been doing wrong outshining what he's been doing right, considering he got -5 426 votes in Round 17 as well as a Brownlow vote. I never have high hopes for Viney these, but if he's able to have more of those mid-season purple patches in future, then I am all for it.

Now the people who finished 5th and 6th ended up fighting for the Best Defender tag after Brayshaw moved into the centre square, with both players dominating a separate half of the season. The one that finished 5th also kept their form going into finals. While it might be weird looking back on this in the future and seeing Finals MVP next to Harrison Petty, he 100% deserves it. With Lever going missing compared to his feats last season, it's good to see that one of our players actually improved on their output in 2021. The player that Petty jumped in the final game to reach the Top 5 was Steven May. May had such a good start to the season as well, even leading at points, but it's always hard to maintain that form at Full-Back, especially when the good teams have yet to arrive. Then Jake hit him, got concussed, hit a different Jake, got suspended and May didn't score once from Round 9 to Round 22. While the 3 Pillars of our Premiership Defense got stronger in places, a little weaker in others and disappeared in front, Petty and May are still reliable as ever in the backline. And people reckon Petty would be just as useful in the forward line, which would be to see something good happen up that end.

Talking about the forward line, in 7th place was our best Forward for the year, Kysaiah Pickett. Every team needs that exiting live-spark up the front and Pickett certainly fills that quota, creating another seasons worth of highlights when going for goal. And one day he's going to take a hanger, he definitely gets enough practice in during games, one of these days he's gonna take that screamer. But until his hands catches up to his feet, I guess we'll have to put up with him because crazily good running shot at goal, no matter the angle. In 8th place with another good start to the season is Ed Langdon. This season and last, Langdon comes out the blocks firing because that's what he's meant to do. Grabbing the ball near Half-Back, sprinting down the wing and getting a kick off to Half-Forward and clearly Langdon does it well. Unfortunately fitness does have to catch up to wingers and Langdon's points did dry up in the latter half of the season, but Langdon would still have to be one of the better wingers in the competition at the moment, now with 3 Top 10 finishes in as many seasons at Melbourne.

Since 2014, Max Gawn has only fallen under 50 points in a season twice. In 2017, he missed a few games due to injury and only scored 26. In 2020, Gawn also missed a couple game due to injury in a shortened season and only scored 43. This season he missed that score again with only 44, yes he again missed games with injury, age could be becoming more of a factor. There'll be a graph I'll put up to show that, and it's probably only confirming the obvious, I reckon Gawn's best could be behind him. Still getting AA jackets for his ruck-work, despite how much work the team has done to make him a Forward Pocket player, and he should still have a few more seasons left... not much toothpaste left in the packet now. Oh well, at least the transition to Luke Jackson should be smooth. Wait, no, he's going back home to Perth while we replace him with Brodie Grundy... kicking that can down the road to give us 2-3 years to find another replacement I see. Clearly Jackson did enough to make the Top 10, beating James Jordon by half a point as well as Neal-Bullen, Fritsch, Lever and Ben Brown within a game of him but Jackson was nowhere near where he was in 2021. Maybe that's Jackson getting his "second year blues" season but compared to the start of the season, there's not that much pain about losing Jackson after watching him this year. We'll just have to see what he does at Fremantle next year to see which of 2021 or 2022 was the blip but I guess he's not our problem anymore.
What other non-important awards did potentially non-426 winners win?

Not as much of an attendance this year but considering what happened last year, I guess you'd have to a dedicated voter to continue remembering some of those loses once the night was over. Thank You if you did votes once or 20 times, your contribution is what keeps this award running.

Next up: Look at my graphs, maybe some will make you laugh.

Best-n-Fairest on tonight, and last year all non-important Points systems predicted the correct winner! Let's see what they say this time.

First up is the GWS one, where they take all the votes, figure out who got what percentage of votes and that's how many votes they get. Oliver gets on top by a game and a half. I'll be going over his score of 88 in the next post.

Next is the old Freo Board system which would give points to anyone who got over 2% of the votes, go 7 through to 1 and continue with the 1s until they ran out of players. A little complicated and in some cases, a good indicator of good team performance on the night.

Next is your standard Top 5 system. The difference between this and the one used for the 426 is that the 426 rewards players for having more Top 5 finishes and you don't need 5 5th place finishes to catch up to 1 1st place finish. Used once in 2006.

Now for the system that was used from start to 2005. This can be known to be wildly different to system used today but that's what happens with so little points on offer. Note that Oliver and Petracca got less points here than in the Brownlow.

Now we look at the individual. Hopefully I don't get in trouble for this, the purpose for this is not to put anyone on blast.

Firstly, what the average voter gave each player each week. Green spots mean they got votes that round, but maybe not enough to be considered a part of the consensus that week. Rounded to the nearest whole number, of course.
