Luke Jackson isn’t even remotely close to JHF on potential. He is going to be very good, but JHF is a potential generational talent.

Jackson went pick 3 in his draft and already has some significant runs on the board, which is pretty impressive for a 21yo tall. He's a very valuable player.

We're paying this much for JHF basically entirely for his predraft hype.

I'd say they're worth about the same.

Seems like we are essentially prepared to pay pick 8, F1R and second round equivalent for JHF, and pick 43 and 53 for Rioli.

Not too bad really. Seems fair.

Hope we’re also able to nail our next two years’ late round draft picks. E.g. Amon, Farrell, Visentini like acquisitions or better.
Just get a couple more Robbie Gray level players in the mid 50s and we'll be sweet

Yea we are, but in this case his predraft is entirely relevant still. He is only 19 and 1 year into the system. We aren’t drafting a 24 year old here.

Anyone complaining about us not having a good draft pick this year, refer to above. At his age you can just consider JHF our #1 pick this year.

No, the real issue is the famous "Port Tax" again. If this was Geelong, Richmond, or Hawthorn, or even their darling expansion clubs making the request to bend the rule, it would have been approved. Port Adelaide? ... "Forget it! Why give any leg-up to those interlopers?"

So many commentators calling out the AFL for being pig-headed about this mega-trade when it benefited so many clubs, and comes on the back of Port's recent history of responsible drafting by loading up the side with young draft picks.
Hawthorn dodged all the future pick rules straight after they came in. No 1st or 2nd round picks over a 3 year period (traded in O'Meara, Mitchell, Wingard, Impey, Scully, Scrimshaw).

On potential talent, no, mostly likely not. But genuine fwd/rucks are just as rare as elite midfielders. If Freo finish top 8 again, they're paying two picks in the team for a 21 y.o. fwd/ruck - that's bloody good value.

You have 12 months of history and it's poor, in the real world that's a depreciation of value, not a break even.

You pay overs when you chase a contracted player: jacskon, Judd etc. were out of contract.

While I think there is a Port Tax, the AFL would be setting a dangerous precedent if they change the rules to enable #1 draft pick getting traded after their first year.

Although you just know that if it was Collingwood or Geelong asking it would be done in 3 seconds.

Luke Jackson could and almost certainly will be the single best ruckman in the league for most of the next decade. He's just as much of a talent as JHF, but plays a key position and has more runs on the board, including having played a significant role in a premiership.

Since 2018 we have been trading for better draft picks.
Next year someone like Bergman may ask to go home; if so, we would expect a first round pick and a little argy bargy.

Win, win for both player & Club and if he stays; well, that is also a win for us.

Be prepared to not have any meaningful draft picks for a few years.
I'm all aboard the get JHF train, but I do feel this is a concern.

Our list is pretty poor at the moment. I feel like we have a lot of gaps. We're at a time when we really need to inject a number of quality players into our system. Not just one. We just need to hope the one we're going for becomes so damn good he takes everyone along with him. If he does that then we'll be fine.

We'll clearly need to be a big player in the FA market in the next few years though. Not much showing up on the radar though for 2023 FA's. Maybe only Ben McKay, Fiorini, Hopper (Pending this year).

The below is fascinating though, Bonner is set to be in our top 10 paid players next year! Suddenly his trade out makes even more sense. Wonder if there's complications around who wants to pay that much for him, and/or whether we wear some of his salary. He certainly shouldn't be in our top 10 paid players.

I don’t share your concerns about our list. I think midfield and forward line are in good shape for now and into the future. Albeit our defence is a bit underwhelming.

But this trade does carry a LOT of risk and could crash and burn. However, JHF is worth the risk.

Is it poor? He clearly didn’t want to be at the club, but the glimpses he did show with his footy talent were unreal. Just go look at his highlight reel for this year.

There is absolutely nothing that shows that Jackson will be the best ruck of the decade? He doesn’t even do that great in actual ruckwork. It’s his ground ball and around the ground that stands out.

Possibly, but as Barrett has mentioned, the AFL have grey areas in ALL their rules. Its just that they choose when & where to go into those grey areas. By far the majority of footy people agree that this is the perfect opportunity, especially because it is quite a rare scenario, and just doesnt benefit one club only. Its the exact scenario where breaking your own rule doesnt actually set a harmful precedent, as it will rarely be repeated.

Just small-mindedness.

I would trade 2-3 Miles Bergman level players for one Martin/Petracca/Dangerfield.

Thats basically the trade equation, with some uncertainty in either direction. Stars win premierships and you don't get stars unless you pay up (most of the time anyway).

We have had plenty of high picks over the past few years anyway, we don't have a lack of good young players on the list.

I dont belive his performances increased his value, and his attitude definitely didn't from a professional stand point.

I think my point is getting a handle on the value of a player after 12 months is a lot more subjective than that of a player 4 or 5 years into the system, you have a body of work, I dont automatically think a pick 1 is a pick 1 twelve months after the fact just because. I do think he lessened his worth, be that intentionally or not im not sure.
