He must have really wanted his 1.6mil over 2 years not 4/5. And so he should, it’s what he’s owed.

yup. I totally understand, same went for Treloar and Grundy -- who was asked to take a pay cut.. but why should they when its what is owed to them

At the end of the the day. Its a business, players will find new clubs even if its not what they may wish. We all move on.

I know his contract is big, but if clubs were interested in him as a player surely there would have been a way to spread his contract out.
You think Freo would have been interested in Brodie without that pick?
No-one was interested in Brodie without pick 19. I bet my life on that, I know for a fact that Brodie was of little interest to everyone

Except he is going to spread it out at Geelong, according to all reports.

So maybe he didn’t want to do it again for us. Maybe we didn’t want him to.

I agree. He is owed his money for the next two seasons and should get it with no changes to his contract.

Interesting to see this discussed on the main board. I like the suggestions that contracts can't be smoothed out in a salary dump. So in this case Bowes gets his high salary over the next two years, then whatever he can negotiate with Geelong after that.

Wonder if this is how the AFL will set it up in future.

Apologies if that came across as an attack on you.

I’m just tired of the “poor Bowes” rhetoric.

Club is doing what they think is best for the future and the way I see it Bowes isn’t getting the worst deal either way.

It’s just business

I know it’s business but we don’t get many that want to be here and want to be apart of the club. Most want to go home.

Just a different take when the shoes on the other foot I guess, the more successful we become the more we will have to move the deadweight on

Everything is approved by AFL first.

For me, it's up to player and the club. Contracts are re-negotiated all the time as was Bowes one with Suns. If Bowes is happy to do it with Cats, why not. A lot of jealousy on main board that Bowes did not choose them. Brodie re-negotiated contract too so will probably Fiorini. We would have to pay significant part of salary without pick like Collingwood does with Treloar and probably Grundy. No team would touch Bowes and take on the whole 2-year salary without pick.

Suns, at the moment, value creating space in cap more than pick 7 and don't see Bowes as best 22. Some supporters call it idiocy and will never accept that and that's ok. Are Suns worse off because of the move? I don't think so. Got enough talent, still probably bringing top draftee, there are players as depth, will have money to target top player, over-pay Anderson if we have to.

Just re-sign Anderson and Rowell already. Wish next season started already.

Can’t remember him being named in any rolling All-Australian teams though. A bit of hyperbole in that article.

The only time Bowes would of been in a Rolling all-Australian team would be RD1 2021 v WCE,

30 kicks at 100%

That is all

Why would he want to stay when he's been told he's not in our plans for best 22.
I believe he's best 22 at half back but with Weller & Budarick out he would have no choice but to play half back and work his way up into the midfield.

The unfortunate thing for Bowes is that he's not as good as Touk or Noah, or a contested beast like Rowell or even a hard nose like Dave Swallow.

I thought he was pretty average at half back when he did play there for us.
In saying that, he had probably never played their in his career before.

Lot of uncontested chipping around the back without really providing much drive and not particularly good defensively.

Bowes is currently a solid fringe / depth player with the potential to be a solid role-player.

I suppose the club feels like if they have their cap space tied up with Bowes that we’re set to miss out on an exciting free agent or risk losing a genuine talent without offering substantial money.

The idiocy is in the amount of money we offered Bowes when his contract was first written / re-negotiated. But this trade is okay; it’s really just cutting our losses (‘is it better to lose Anderson or Bowes + Pick 7’, that’s the speculation).

We really won’t know for sure (win or lose) until two years from now - depending who we lose or don’t lose, who we lure or don’t lure with the greater cap space. If we still lose players, can’t lure a single person here, then yeah, it’s some genuinely awful list management - but if we lure in some genuine talent and don’t lose our own talent, it’s a good move.

I thought he was quite good at providing a cool head, but whenever his opponent got goal side, he was left eating their dust. Really only suited to playing on slower medium forwards.

Didn’t have a great year in the VFL.
21 possessions /game
2 goals 10 behinds.

Is a qlder, winger.

maybe could come as a VFL player with potential to sign in mid season draft if playing well and Sharp looks like leaving.
