I've no idea how close it was to the source material, but I don't think much could have saved it. The writing was trash.

• Galadriel was completely one-note for all 8 episodes.
• The greatest smith of the second age needed to be told what an alloy was
• Was it even ever established how the elves were going to die? Was it because their tree was sick? Why was the tree sick? How does that kill immortal beings? What has mithril got to do with healing a bloody tree? Barely alluded to, and never explained. Zero stakes. I had no reason to care.

Alternatively I reckon Sandman would have been done better by a fan/writer than it was by the author. In this instance they gave Gaiman too much control and he went waaaay off the ranch.

Stephen King once directed his own movie based on a book of his and it was by far the best adaption of his work.

Quite apart from some narrative changes (which one must accept when crossing media) and some awful acting (I'm looking at Cain and Abel). Gaiman made some of the following changes. Now this ain't a Little Mermaid situation. It just took out some of the immersion for fans of the comics.




White to black...meh, that's fine, but the gender and bodyshape change was just jarring.



Gender change....ok, but don't add sexual tension...oh and John Constantine exists outside the story as well, so why change!?



Gender change of Lucifer....meh, but at least get someone who can act.



Made no difference, in fact the change of colour made more sense here.



This one I hated, Death was a goth teen type. That's what made the character interesting. Changing her into a streetwise 30 year old black woman made zero sense!

i've never read the comics and had no knowledge of it whatsoever and enjoyed it. the missus who was obsessed with it and knew all the details already, also enjoyed it.

as for the witcher, the first season was great. i love the short story/anthology format as it fits the witcher world well. when they tried to make it GoT giant political epic i lost interest. don't really care about cavill leaving as they already ruined what was good about it already.
