Seriously - people complaining about handing over future 2nds and 3rds should grab a cup of tea and look at this list of failures who went from pick 14th to 21st only 4 years ago.

Hately - 14
J. Clark - 15
McHenry - 16
Sturt - 17
Duursma - 18
Stocker - 19
Collier - Dawkins - 20
Ely Smith - 21

Most are either already gone from the AFL and/or playing state league footy

No pick is a guarantee, and even late first rounders can end up being massive busts.

I still maintain the biggest determinant of whether a player makes it or not is the club they land at. Sure talent etc help, but without the proper structure around you it’s that much harder.

I feel for the Jimmy Toumpas’ of this world - while you look at us or the Cats/Swans record of development.

Maybe I misheard. It doesn't make as much sense to me for Sydney to trade back if they were keen on him.
Not that they were keen on him especially, just that he was their pick of what was left. Plus this is a gamble for both clubs, they've made a bet on us under-performing by gaining our future second in a deeper draft.

Original Draft order had Port before all of Brisbane's picks in the 30's, so makes sense we are the pick after Port does it not?

Pretty sure the draft tracker is up to date and shows us with 37 and 45.

Taken a break since trade period on here, just came in to see the general feeling and wowzer

seems to be a split

- i trust the club/have watched Weddle and really like the pick

- doesnt matter how good he is the trade is the problem

I would say I am comfortably in the first group, have done plenty of draft stuff over the years both professionally and socially with mates and at the end of the day you take the talent, next year likely the picks are eaten a bit so it doesnt concern me too much.

Athletically he is a great size, moves like a guy smaller than he is and has great hands

Thats a win, the trade might upset you but at the end of the day the club knew where they see themselves landing next year and where their father son's likely land next year they will know how last night's trade will effect their stock.

I agree with a lot of that although not sure Sydney wanted weddle at that pick. IMO if you are set on a player especially at an early pick you would simply take them unless you got a ridiculous offer which was the premise of my criticism in the first place. Anyway from a long way out I had weddle in my 4 for our second pick so I’m rapt he’s a hawk. Now we need to imbibe the spirit of Travis Cloke and put a lot of smoke and shadows behind the windows so pick 37 is brayden george and 45 is Ollie hotton. And does pick 80 get it done for Coach Killer ?

Twomey said Sydney were keen… that’s enough for me .. Cal only says what clubs tell him to be fact..his precious phantom draft and reputation hinge on it, which is quite nauseating in itself..

Yeah Cal is good at what he does but what does he do exactly? Ask decision makers what they will do and write it down and share it. Am I wrong? I don’t see that as insight.
Collingwood were ready to pounce on him even if Sydney didnt want him

Don't see why they'd trade back, it seems that Davey isn't going to be bid on prior to that pick.
Davey will be bid on by the dogs. Pick 22 will be on the table.

IMO, if pick 22 is on table, we will put the F2(WB) + 45 and hopefully get pick 59 back from Dons.

They have 49, 54, 59.

they can match Davey if bid at picks 22-24 and need around 600-650 pts for that.

45,49,54 = 854 pts,will have 200 pts left over which equates to pick 55.

PS : they also are chasing blues( f2+46) and Saints(F2+44) for similar deals

I hope the move is justified down the track we likely gave up pick 27, pick 20ish 2023 and pick 40ish 2023 to take the kid at 18 in last nights draft.

I'd have probably preferred Phillipou at pick 7, but Cam looks like a nice young player also.

That's GOAT.

And on a related note, for all the Gooners out there, MacKenzie passes the ball with the class of Cazorla.

re Weddle pick swap, based on drafting history strong probability we would have burned one of the 2 x 2nd round picks anyway.
So we trade (effectively give?) an extra one away and secure a player in Weddle who we believe will be an AFL certainty.

I'm ok with that.

This is the huge key like always.

The melts aren’t about Weddle the player.

They’re about the package given to Sydney, and the fact that we had moved Titch and JOM to stack ourselves for 2023, which we have blown.

I’ve got absolutely no doubt we could still have Weddle on our list in 2023 and not have given up what we did and how we did, to who we did.
