Strategy AFLW post season Trade, FA & Draft Talk 2024

How I hope we don’t do something stupid last minute. 14 22 28 is a good hand in a good draft either take all 3 or bundle for a higher pick and take 2. We did well this year but it’s not linear we are still only 3 years old. We need to keep bringing in good young talent as each year the pool will be stronger as the girls get full development pathways and play against a better standard coming through.
Agreed.

I feel like the Harris deal is very similar to the omaera deal in the mens. We will be pushed into a deal which is way overs and it will backfire, particularly as output wise (over the past couple of seasons), Harris hasn't set the world on fire

Harris played her best all round season in the Dees premiership year. Not surprisingly, this coincided with having Daisy Pearce as her Captain. Pearce made a conscious effort to build a connection with Harris, which helped help her become a lot more team orientated. I think Bates has the ability to fill Pearce's role and could help get the best out of Harris.

There is no one in our squad that can play like Harris, she covers the ground well for her height, has a great level of aggression, would be a serious air presence and can pinch hit in the ruck. That said, I agree with what has already been said, we cannot overpay to get this trade done. I don't believe it should involve our first round pick.

The afl.com.au article makes it seems like we will not entertain it, but as to whether that's not posturing or not, we'll find out by close of deadline this afternoon.

The Hawks have been unwilling to place pick No.14 on the trade table in any way to complete a trade for Harris, leaving the club with only second-round picks to prise the four-time All-Australian away from the Demons.

Pretty uninspiring trade period.

What draft picks do we have?

We're definitely weaker going into 2025. I just don't know who replaces Mattea.

I'm still gutted about losing her to the Pies, particularly as it seems we low-balled her. She was my favourite player this season, espeically after her massive hanger.

Laura Elliot was playing that role at Box Hill during the last 2 off seasons so she may move into that role.
Leaves a hole in defence though.

We also have pebbles (Laura stone) to come back in. Doesn't have the size or strength of breed, but move the magnets and it'll work

I don’t get it Breed is like West but with far less skill and footy IQ and at 23 she’s too old to tangibly improve. Keep hitting the draft this group is far better developed than any before and that continues to be true over time as the competition matures. We got well compensated.

Wow, I mean, their spot in the team has always seemed low on the list, but is this the draft to grab 5 players from? Do we still have another DFA period to come?

I guess its a case those that are in the team now are "established" first teamers and last years crop are the next to come through and anyone drafted now has to push through again.

What can tend to get lost in trading before the draft for AFLW is that every group of 18 year olds will almost inevitably be more skilled / talented than the previous season(s).

Obvious reason being that almost all these girls will not only have played football continuously since age 5, but the standard of their footy, and coaching, will be superior to those who went before them.

We have heaps of experience in our side, perhaps our age profile is too old compared to some others in the chasing pack?

Now is the best time to genuinely invest in 5 or 6 talented 18 year olds who may actually become 6-10 year Hawthorn players.

Yeh I thought they would delist one of Fellows or Locke, I didn’t think it would be both. Tbh both struggled to get a spot in the side and when they did, they didn’t exactly nail down a spot.

I totally get small forward is the hardest spot to play, but given the team success, I though their output would be higher

Yeah after last season's high turnover this does feel excessive. 14 in two seasons is almost half the list.

Haven't heard anything about signing anyone in this DFA window that ends today, so draft will be interesting. Won't necessarily have to take all selections, they are allowed to have 2 slots open for supplementary signing period in Feb. So minimum of 3 draftees, max of 5. I expect 4, only a few clubs went into last season with one spot open.

Looking at our list below
DEFENDERS
*Richardson
*Kemp
*Everist
*Elliott
*TLR
*Smith
+Allen
×Stephenson

RUCK/MIDS
*Wales
*Vukic
×Dumont

*Bates
*West
*Fleming
*Stone
×Breed
×Deed

*Ashmore
*Williamson
*Sheriff
McLaughlin
+Coyne
×Baskaran

FORWARDS
*Gilroy
*Bodey
*Aine
*Eardley
*Hipwell
Stratton
Butterworth
×Fellows
×Locke

* = best 21 last season

You take BPA in first round but I'd guess by end of draft we end with something like 1 mid, 1 [small] forward, 2 talls (any pos), 1 wildcard if used (probably mid).

My issue with delisting Sophie is that she was a Hawk through and through, and she was happy just being on the list and wasn't going to seek opportunities elsewhere

If there’s better players coming through the pathways than Sophie, and frankly she has also slipped out of our better side due to the influx of quality players, then why let her keep hold on a list spot?

We only have 30 don’t we?

We need to manage our women’s program as a professional high performance program. Gifting players spots because they are nice or good people is not what a program like this does. Furthermore, squads are far too small to carry passengers and at the same time expect to win a premiership.

Spot 30 is rarely, ever used.
Just saying it seemed like a poor delisting

So, you’re suggesting the below report from the AFLW’s Sarah Black about 6 clubs having to pick top-up players outside their listed 30 is fake news?

Being forced to use it with injuries is not what i meant.

Look back to the hawks in 2009 where we used every player including rookies. Correlation does not equal causation.

Having only 9 emergencies for a game day squad of 21 is small, you definitely need cover from every player. Last season only Deed (midfielder and we were stacked there) and Dumont (rookie spot shenanigans) didn't play.

This year's rookies did well, a lot of them played integral part to our good finish but I don't think the last 2 picks in this year's draft will do the same thing. They'll get some experience if they're injuries, similar to Butterworth playing when Bodey was out.

Whether it’s through injury or form, spot 30 in an AFLW season is far more likely to be called upon than spot 44 (inc. rookies) on an AFL list.
