So what Vicco team does he end up at in 24 as a great feel good story? Stkilda, Geelong or Richmond?

Wheatley to announce it as the feel good story to kick off the 2023 season ..the afl community have wrapped their arms around him and embraced him back into the fold at the home of football where he can be close to family and friends!

If he's stepping away from football on his own terms then why the **** is he being placed on the crows inactive list and being paid out his contract when he should simply be sacked.

Now i'm not one for priority picks but this is complete bullshit on a player handed to the crows. If he goes back to footy and in particular onto a Victorian teams list then the crows 100% deserve a compensation pick for him.

Is it just me or are Victorian kids over represented when it comes to go home factor/struggling interstate?
Does the isolation of WA/SA breed them tougher (JHF not withstanding)?
I can't remember many WA kids demanding they come home/get drafted by a WA side or whinging about living across the country.

Probably yes, but that doesn't seem the case here (at least not yet... 12 months out of the game and we will see what he does).

Tom Boyd got his trade-home wish and still walked away from the game at a young age
Cyril retired at what - 28? (10 days off his 29th birthday)
Tom Swift walked away with a contract offer in front of him (no guarantees he was going to last more than 12 months anyway)

There are a few cases of players retiring as they have lost the love of the game. I think most of us tragics often forget that when it is a job it can become less fun. Training 2 times a week and a game a week with mates is awesome as a teenager - but 5 days of mostly meetings, no or minimal social life, basically a 7-day-a-week job for around 10 months of the year, then expectations during the other 2 months (fitness standards at most clubs ). It isn't enjoyable for some people.

Talking to some draft watchers back in 2019, McAsey was considered a flight risk then, and hearsay I heard out of Adelaide was that he pretty much struggled from the get go.

The biggest issue for the game, is that Victoria considers itself as the founder and home of football and it’s their game, and this thinking pervades “the game” at all levels in Vic and the Vic media.

If a non Victorian says they don’t want to move or go home, they’re a villain. If a Victorian says similar, they’re “brave”.

These kids don’t grow up thinking they’ll have to move to make it. Where as kids dreaming of other sports know they’ll have to move overseas, and are ready to from the age of 15 in some sports.

It’s purely a mindset thing. And as long as the game is still centralised in Victoria, nothing will be done.

And there were some, me included who thought he might be worth a punt.
What a waste.

I’ve said previously that if Richmond weren’t willing to keep we’d be best to stay away. They’re a well run club now but they have shown a capacity to forgive transgressions to an extent in the belief they can get players to toe the line eventually

Stack had the talent but not the application and if he’d shown a willingness to clean up his act he’d still be at Richmond. We were right to steer clear

So I don’t get labeled a hypocrite, Winder’s episode in Geelong was a first time error and by all accounts out of character so I don’t mind him getting a second chance. This is not Stack’s first incident

True.

With more than half the competition based in Melbourne (+ G) you have the big chance to offer locational stability.
Melbourne clubs have equal access to the best youth Australia wide (plus two feeder clubs), then can offer career stability, less match day travel, games at the 'G', marquee clashes set up by the AFL etc. With these advantages the game is set up for Melbourne clubs to retain interstate kids, as well as playing the come home card for other Vic boys.
With Vic boys now seemingly being able to play the 'momma's boy' card without fear of censure, it's becoming harder and harder for teams outside of Vic to create and keep a team capable of competing at the top of the ladder.

The draft in the nineties was a free hit for all clubs and kids everywhere seemed happy to move to get a gig. Few left to go home... from anywhere to anywhere. Now the guys who are third round or later are the ones who seem happiest to go anywhere. Just grateful for the opportunity. It's those Vic Metro kids at the top end of the first round that are the worst offenders, at the moment. They know they're going to go early, and they know that more than half the competition is home based, and they know that most of the teams at the bottom are interstate, so they play the card hard and early.

And it's been getting worse and will only continue to do so.

Some people on here repeatedly told us that we could never draft Stack as he had bad influences in WA. Many on here kept whinging about how we missed a gun (despite him not actually being that good) but this shows that our club was right all along.

I'll always have fond memories of him shit-mixing Viney though.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

To my favourite Eagle and the reason I follow the blue and Gold.

I can still remember laying on the loungeroom floor in my PJs watching on TV as he kicked 13 v Footscray and demolishing the cats in the 92 2nd Semi

It's easy to forget he was the highest scorer in 1992 GF with 6.1

Also kicked 5 in 1991 GF

That game v Essendon where he kicked 11.8 was crazy and imagine he had a plugger kick. could've been even more amazing

In 1991 he kicked 111.89.... 200 SHOTS AT GOAL!!

From 30 out I always expected him to miss. And he mostly did.

From 50 out I always thought he was 2/3+ chance of dobbing it. And he usually did.

In many ways should have been a CHF rather than a FF. He could kick it a mile and was better from distance.

200 scoring shots, plus probably 50 out on the full.
But regardless, 200 scoring shots is insane.
Lockett was so accurate he managed 6 tons... and zero 200 scores in a season.
Dunstall did the 200 scores twice (best 145:84), as did Ablett (best 129:79).
I'm sure a few of the old guys did, but for some they played in an era where points weren't statisiced.
