I don’t really buy this concept that players are constantly getting better over time such that teams from 1980 would get flogged by teams from 2000, who themselves would get flogged by 2020 players etc.

Dunno why, it just feels like something we tell ourselves each generation. What’s the logical conclusion? Will players in 2080 be that much exponentially more elite than those in 2040?

If you look at athletics and swimming I think it is reasonable to assume that athletes in team sports would also be faster and stronger than similar athletes 20 years earlier. I'm not sure 2022 North are beating 2002 Brisbane though.

The game style that won the 2018 flag was outdated this season, let alone 2002 or 1988 and Paddy Cripps has an inch on every member of the 1992 flag side.

Any 20+ year old side would get murdered by a modern side.
What exactly are you talking about when you say Paddy has an inch on everyone?

Doesn’t mean game styles get inherently better and better over time though. It’s just trends. Agree about Paddy’s inch tho 🥵

That 2002-2004 period was up there with some of the most enjoyable football I can remember watching. Watching the Judd/cousins/Kerr partnership and our rebuild really take flight.

2005/2006 was still awesome, but with the added expectations.

I hope to look back in a few years and think the same of our current rebuild.
My biggest Eagles disappointment is I perfectly missed Judd's career with us. Moved overseas a month before his debut, then moved back a month after he was traded.

Ouch. Youtubehighlights doesnt do his peak form justice either. Hopefully we get another player like this so you can witness it live.

Geelong and Sydney the standouts

How bad have Carlton been

Surprised that Essendon have made 11 finals series since it’s been 2004 since they last won one

Adelaide have made finals 12 times without winning a flag

5 of Essendon's 11 are from 2000-04 though, so it's 6 in 18 for the rest.

Thanks.

Bulldogs have made a lot of finals series for little reward. The rest of the top 5 have consistently competed at the top end, except for the Bombers. The Bombers love to scrape into finals, over-rate their list, cut their rebuild short and then repeat the process.

Uh, the Bombers since 1991 have played in 3 GFs, winning 2. That's a better record than most of the teams in the competition.

The problem is of course since 2004 they haven't won a single final at all.

That's it hey.

Shows how many teams have won clumps of flags lately like Tiges Hawks lions.

Is it better to win 2 flags in 20 years 10 years apart or 2 in a couple of years then 20 years of nothing.

Exactly as I said it - they are inconsistent. Did well in the 90s and started a decline after their 2001 GF loss that has never been turned around. They haven't finished in the top 4 for 21 years!
