I understand the sentiment but looking at it it may not be as bad as horrible. Picks 30, 35, 50, 57. Turn that into one potential excellent type who is now rated in the best 10 from the draft, one who was serviclble for a while and played more games than the average for a pick taken at 35 and 2 misses. It’s not that far off what history says you should expect.
I rate it as horrible because:

1. Our first pick was a speculative, deaf player who couldn’t hear his team mates on a VFL field, let alone hear them on a packed MCG, when there were several other clearly superior options available in KPP, like Cox, Battle and Stewart.

2. We should have had another sub-30 pick but our recruiters dragged their feet with Witts and ended up having to accept peanuts for Witts after GC traded all their sub-30 picks out.

I agree that one star player makes a draft good, but frankly we got super lucky with Josh. It was a very poor trade/draft period overall for us and we were extremely fortunate to have him fall in to our laps.

The other poor choice was Kirby when both Rioli and Stengle were available.

We really love those speculative picks.

I can forgive the Kirby selection to a certain extent, because on pure talent I had him ahead of those two boys, and I won’t begrudge the club backing themselves in to get the best out of a player who might lack discipline. His heart issue that forced him in to retirement was horrendously unlucky.

On pure talent those other two were still pretty high. Rioli‘s talent in his draft year year was talked up pretty highly as well. I just can’t justify passing two highly talented players to take someone who’s such a long shot to make it even if his talent is better which is arguable.

And given his body I’m not sure his heart issues were horrendously unlucky.

It was a genetic heart condition iirc, not caused by his weight issues.
I’ll be honest, Rioli was the one I really wanted at that pick too, but as I said, I’m not going to begrudge the Kirby selection.

Stengle wasn't the player then he is now. In his draft year, Stengle was just another ordinary prospect. Kirby was a good selection at the time - he really looked like he could make it - but his heart let him down. Injuries will always happen. Much like Shaz, at the time, was the right call. But his body let him down.

We're lucky Daicos was good enough to be on a list because Pick 50+ for JD is daylight robbery. It should always be a reminder that players develop at different rates and not to write someone off too young.

If we don’t win a flag with the Daicos boys then we never will.

I'm going to throw Moore into that conversation. Drafting that level of quality isn't easy.

Spot on. Lets look at it as a gift from the Gods. Going back to Jmac point, if we don't win a flag with this gift we never will, or at least we have missed a golden opportunity.
I think Jmac is correct, our window is very narrow, we win it this year or the next or we're done.

We have two extraordinary talents in these brothers, and Moore. As much as Naicos is sublime, let's not forget Jaicos is an exceptional talent in his own right. Not up for debate.

I suspect we go full tilt at a flag this year, considering Sides, Pendles and Howe are in their last year or two. Particularly Sides.

To be fair, it was gift wrapped for us

This line of thinking always amuses me. He was no more or less gift wrapped than Cal and Tyler Brown, or Stewart, or the Kelly brothers, or the NGA draftees over recent years. Club still needs to make the call on whether to take them and what they’re prepared to invest. Each one we take restricts our capacity to acquire other talent.

Daicos Senior is idolised by the fan base. Zero chance we were not selecting his sons.

Similar to the Clokes we selected Jason and Cameron to make sure we landed Travis.

The Clokes were different because they could have gone as father sons to two clubs. They all could have played for Richmond.

Less in a way given no club bid for him and we just took him with the last pick we used. On that basis would have got him if he wasnt a father son also.

We put the work in with Julie Cloke to ensure they chose Collingwood. The end game was always Travis.
