I'm still feeling bullish about this season. While i will be so disappointed if ML is out for the year, I'm really excited by what our new midfield brigade will look like! Still can't wait for it all to kick off!

Its a horrible situation if its a ACL. I know he kind of arrived last year, but 2023 had the feeling he could kick 70

There is no argument with that, but you must understand that he WILL be replaced by someone. The question then becomes how effective the replacement is and whether the team as a whole adjusts. I certainly would not make the "pick 1 beckons" call just because Lewis is down.
And also there's plenty of others on the list who are fit and training really well who will be huge for us this year. Players who've previously been quelled by injury or come in from another club. Even some of our draftees could prove pivotal to our season.

Most people have us pegged as bottom 4 . Lewis out is very disappointing but in the scheme of things will it really impact us that much this season ?
Its opportunity for someone else and may make us more versatile long term

Ash Browne on Hawks insiders tonight said that he actually asked Andrew Gaze if Lewis shooting 3’s was a good sign for the ACL and Gazey said it meant nothing as shooting like that wouldn’t impact the ACL/knee much at all.
He went on to say that he expects we will be ultra cautious, and that we won’t see Lewis until after Round 8.

My first thoughts were geez that sux but my second thoughts were I can handle that (8 games) as long as he doesn’t ever need surgery on it and the acl is sound. In the grand scheme of things 8 games is probably a good outcome.

"Hawthorn is still waiting to see how Mitch Lewis' knee settles across the next week after the budding key forward sprained his anterior cruciate ligament in match simulation last week. The incident was so innocuous the club struggled to identify the moment when going through the tape, but the scans ruled out a rupture last Wednesday."

So innocuous they don't know when it occured? That's prob the worst sign of all as nothing to do with impact.

Leaving before I get attacked for use of the phrase 'injury prone'

It's not uncommon. Plenty of players have fully ruptured their ACL in innocuous incidents.

More importantly there are far more instances where he would have put a lot of force through his knee and hasn't damaged it.

Sometimes things happen and it's just unlucky.

Most ACLs are innocuous - landing/planting in a certain way causing the knee to blow up.

Happy we are taking the risk averse approach with our young KPF. Could be a blessing in the long term provided it’s not a full rupture - gives our medical team a chance to target the causes without him missing 12 months.

This injury could simply having been unlucky, but also knee issues could relate to weak/immobile ankles, scuffed mechanics, muscle imbalances etc, so fingers crossed this is a turning point.

The season hasn’t even started and we’re already copping injuries. Lucky the club kept an open an extra list spot.
This happens to every club at this time of the year when match sim steps up and players get pushed a bit harder.

We’ve got 2 injuries that will have players miss Round 1 at this stage(Lewis and Morris).

Even if that number doubles, we’re doing ok really.

That’s why speculating in a the Best 22 is a moot exercise - a club gets to put it out on the park once in a blue moon.

Look at what players 28-32 on your list will bring to the team as that’s a more realistic analysis of how strong the side will be.

Isn't there like a bit of science around getting the players through to about round 3-4 where the chances of really bad injuries like acl's go down a ridiculous percentage?

St Kilda having about as much luck with their KPFs as we did with our rucks last year.

If you go back, I honestly don’t think we’ve played our “best 22” since the ‘15 GF. But regardless, it’s a just a fun hypothetical. Given how young our squad is, it’ll be a rotating cast this year for sure.
