Training Preseason 22-23

I haven’t been to any of the training sessions but all the training clips coming out of Arty look sharp and exciting. Very different type of player compared to others on our list. That side step needs AFL time, hopefully he can iron out other parts of his game and become more consistent.

The training clips are only highlights and don’t include the footage of him fumbling most of his ground ball attempts and missing targets.

Full disclosure I haven’t been to any of the trainings either. My comment is reflective of his VFL games last year where he’d do 1-2 lovely things a game, picking the ball up super cleanly with pace, but the trade off is he fumbled and overran it the other 90% of the time. He may have very well improved but you can’t tell from the clips.

Training Report, 15th Feb

Magnificent conditions at Skinner Reserve greeted the players for a short, but spirited session.

We have a big session ahead on Friday, with an extended match simulation, so there were several players on light duties today in order to manage them ahead of Friday's hitout. I spoke with conditioning staff who declared only Busslinger (shoulder), Johannisen (calf and hamstring soreness) and Bodendo (groin) will certaonly miss. English is 50/50 and they expect that he will participate. This means that our list is ripening beautifully for the official practice matches ahead.

Light duties and rehab group: Busslinger, Johannisen, Bedendo, English, Bailey Smith, Duryea, McLean, Liberatore, O'Brien, Gallagher and Hannan (he then joined the main group). Crozier and Bruce were away from the group on the e-bikes to manage their loadings, but joined the players for some kicking to end the session.

Bedendo and JJ worked on reflexes with two tennis balls and a footy. They passed them to each other at close range, keeping score if the other dropped it. They seem like good mates. Bedendo declared "I smashed him".

Today's session:

30 players fully participated and were broken into three groups of ten. The line coaches led their repspective zones.

a) Forwards: Naughton, Ugle-Hagan, Lobb, Weightman, West, Darcy, Hannan, A. Jones, Khamis, McNeil

The forwards practiced extending goal kicking form designated positions. Once they were successful, they moved swiftly to a different station to shoot from the new spot. It became blustery and was challenging for some of the longer range kicks, with Spangher vocal from the sidelines, preaching: "Work on your mechanics" and "transition quickly, work up a sweat".

It was notable that Lobb and Weightman were technically sound with their ball drop and balance. They were incredibly accurate and encouraging of each other. Naughton could be heard at one point calling out "that's what we pay you for Lobby" after he nailed a long range goal. Jamarra looked more comfortable from the more challenging angles and was leaning back on his kicks from outside 50, resulting in him pulling repeated kicks left. Spangher was onto this and tutoring him on the mechanics. Naughton's ball drop has improved and notreleasing it as early as previous years, on today's evidence. His finishing work wassolid today. Hannan has the ability to roost a ball. One torp from inside the centre square hit the net half way up, which fired up Arty Jones: "Yeah, talk to it baby!". West's goal kicking was the least effective today, and he was articularly hard on himself, scolding himself after effors.

The forwards aso worked on their leading patterns and finding space. Lots of discussion and instruction being shared between players. Lobb seems to have fit in so well and looks relaxed and happy. Khamis is assured in the air and was impressive with his clean one-grab marking. Darcy also appears to be firming for Round One. He looks flawless and effortless with his marking and fluency with kicking. What a kid!

They also did marking practice with the bags. McLean and Crozier kicked the ball up and players took several hangers. Stef Martintutored them on use of the knee and hip to ride their opponent and gain leverage. Darcy was a natural at this. All players clunked big grabs, prompting a chorus of cheers from teammates.

b) Defenders: Keath, Gardner, Jones, Dale, Richards, Williams, Daniel, Scott, Cleary, Raak

Rohan Smith had them playing a gridiron or rugby drill, with a tight scrimmage, followed by a quick spread and release. Players had to either shut down space or find space and this was a high octane drill, which focussed on decision making, agility and precision. Keath, Jones and Gardner remained on the track for an extended drill post-session, with Smith rolling the ball to the defensive pocket boundary line. One of the trio had to collect the ball and deliver to another outside 50, while being put under heat by the third player. They each rotated several times and were all equally impressive. Keath's field kicking and Jones' poise were particularly noteworthy. Gardner then remained on the track even longer and Stef Martin worked on his defensive spoils. He has an iron fist!

c) Mids: Bontempeilli, Macrae, Treloar, Garcia, Clarke, Vandermeer, Baker, R. Smith McComb, Sweet

Lots of stoppage and clearance work with Webb and Lade. Players worked on the wing tight against the boundary and had t release quickly by hand and then find a target by foot further up the ground. Bont and Macrae didn't appear to make a mistake. Both primed for big years. The group was vocal and very energetic. Treloar is back in full swing and his kicking was a feature. "Oh, again Adam" each time he pinpointed a pass. A great sight to see; he is just a great professional and looks focussed.

Spoke with Rohan Smith after training and he says we are tracking really well. He says they squad are just working so hard and its showing. I couldn't agree more.

Any questions, please don't hesitate to ask...

Feels like this is the first time it's been stable in a long time? Good sign.

I was wondering earlier how we'd use Bailey Williams this year. It wouldn't surprise me if he was a regular sub. Seems a good option to have as a back up defender / winger.

I'd have Dale, Daniel, Richards and Duryea all ahead of him.

Article on AFL.com also saying English has been cleared of any strain and as we expected was held out as a pre-cautionary measure. Also the guys with a history of injuries (Libba etc...) are being managed through certain sessions.

See page 48...

How does everyone think our leadership group will look this year? I have a feeling it will be the same as 2022 and actually be stable for once...

2022: Bontempelli (C), Macrae (VC), Daniel, Duryea, Naughton
2021: Bontempelli (C), Wallis (VC)
2020: Bontempelli (C), Hunter (VC), Dunkley, Johannisen, Wallis, Wood
2019: Wood (C), Bontempelli (VC), Hunter, Johannisen, Trengove, Wallis
2018: Wood (C), Bontempelli (VC), Hunter, Johannisen, Redpath, Roughead
