Player Watch Pick #18 (2019) - Mitch Georgiades

He needs to play with more authority, he looks passive - it's just mind set with him.
Too many of our players look too passive. I'm still having nightmares about Burton standing on the boundary with a pleading look towards the boundary umpire on his face, as the collingwood player just picks up the ball and jogs around him

Yeah not sure Todd really deserved to play more games early on. He arguably played in 2017 before he was ready and it also arguably cost us the final against West Coast. Then his dad died. Then he was playing but not really contributing a lot outside of structural importance.

Ah 2017, the year that brought us such roles as Trengove forwar- tagging Rance. Would have taken a low possession and low impact game from Marshall over that garbage.

Yeah, so not everyone. philthy05 El_Scorcho and myself were some, but not all, that were bullish on Marshall and wanted him in the side.

He played 20 games in his first three seasons. Compare this to Hipwood who played 52 in his first three years. What about this screams persistence?

Despite playing him in the humiliating 2017 elimination final loss, Hinkley proceeded to pick Marshall a grand number of seven times in the proceeding year.

Marshall provided genuine quality link play between our midfield and forward, something that is lacking in the majority of our list. No other player has developed like Marshall under Hinkley.

Come 2022 and Dixon misses the majority of the year and Hinkley is forced to play Todd. He breaks out. Amazing. Well done, Ken.

So yes, I stand by the opinion Todd broke out despite Hinkley, not because of him. If he was at 100 games already, what kind of player would we have on our hands?

* Hinkley. Even if he had any significant part in Marshall becoming the player he is right now it is one very tiny part of a job he is doing to a record level of bad. Go ahead and tongue his little nuts if you want.

In 2017 he was played before he was really ready but his end of season form pushed him into the side. Trengove, despite popular opinion, had done a reasonable job as that third tall behind Dixon and Westhoff. He showed he wasn't quite ready.

In 2018, as has been said, he spent time away from the club. He only played 4 SANFL games that year, so it's not like he was sitting in the SANFL. Only played 11 games total for the season.

The only time he legitimately could have played more was 2019. But, his SANFL form stank. Went goalless in half his games as the main forward target and only kicked multiple goals in 3 out of 14 games. We complain regularly about giving players games that they don't deserve, but we want to give Todd games he didn't deserve?

I'm more than comfortable with Todds development. We are reaping the rewards now, that's all that matters.

People mention Hipwood and pumping games into him. Is he a star? For all his early development, he peaked in his 3rd year (he's now in his 8th) and his stats have not improved at all since then.

If only we had an ex player with a perfect goal kicking routine who was willing to offer his services to the club.

Oh yes that is right, the dumb asses at the club told Schulz that he was not required.

We also have a coaches award-winning, multiple AA, club champion premiership winning forward who went through serious yips and managed to get himself out of them. But he's not required either.

Fun fact: In the last seven years of any player to play 100 games Hipwood has the lowest AFL ratings points

The his form wasn’t good enough can’t possibly fly in an era we gifted a tonne of games to smaller players off the back of non-existent sanfl form, or a run of half a dozen games in the afl side where they had done Jack shit.

While Todd was in the sanfl there was any number of players underperforming and not getting dropped or players coming in from the magpies on no form.

Didn't think he was that terrible against Collingwood. Had 14 disposals, took 7 marks kicked 1.2.

In a forward line that didn't see much of the ball.

He needs to play with more authority, he looks passive - it's just mind set with him.
He did that all of that basically in the last quarter when the juice had well and truly been sucked out of the game.

He still had more marks that Dixon and Marshall. Same scoring opportunities as Marshall and one less than Dixon. Equal disposals to Dixon and 1 more than Marshall. Seems to be harshly assessed IMO

Yep, and that's why Todd looks like the first genuine KPF we've had for a long time.

People have been hanging s**t on Hinkley for George (and previously Marshall) for not being up to scratch and saying it's because he's failed to develop a KPF in his time at the club. But when the other stock he's had to work with have been Mitch Harvey and Mason Shaw, it's easy to see why that might be the case.

He's a crab when it comes to KPPs. John Butcher dominated SANFL, wouldn't play him. 2nd last game in AFL 20disps/4goals. Last game 1 goal when we only kicked 4 in total and he never plays again. Jackson Trengove was a serviceable defender. Has to play ruck, gets moved up forward and pushed out. Dougal howard. Better than serviceable defender, randomly decided that he is a forward now (while 30 something Westhoff plays in defence because he was about to be dropped up forward). Kicks 2 goals when both teams kicked 8-9 each, gets dropped, and the narrative is 'he wanted out'. Frampton dominates the SANFL. Only got 4 games with us, 2nd last 3 goals, has 1 poor game and then gone. He looks alright in a decent team. Hayes has dominated SANFL for years, gets squeeze out by a blow in who he plays in front of in the SANFL, isn't even given a chance at selection when he's not picked for the pre-season games. Ryder gets cut for Ladhams, who gets cut for Hayes, who is going to get cut for Teakle, who is going to get cut because he's shit. The prick played Jake Neade at FF the year we were probably the best chance of a flag. If you're over 6'2 I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Port with Hinkley at the helm.

He was less fortunate than some, more fortunate than others.

If John Butcher had been able to get a gig as a Dixon decoy
Then ...?

If I could like this twice I would. Maybe I just did...

Regarding selection, We could have played 4 forwards as we have done before with a 2nd ruck up forward, or we could have tried Finlayson down back in what, without Burton, is an alarmingly undersized defense with a third tall (Jonas) who got 3 touches last game. We have a gaggle of half back flankers/wingers. We don't need to bring in another one who refuses to defend.

What is going to help his self belief more...being omitted so he can breathe a sigh of relief and go mad playing for the Magpies, or being given a chance to play against a weak AFL defense and getting another opportunity to get his goalkicking shit together.

The greatest thing for him would be to get help from a former forward he respects to sort out his goalkicking routine and technique.

For once I have to agree with Ken Hinkley. Georgiades' problems are in his head and only he can fix them. There is nothing wrong with his kicking technique as 2021 showed when he kicked 32.17. Even last week he kicked a pretty good goal from an acute angle and it never looked like missing. Mitch can do it but he needs work it out in his head. There are times when he gets the ball within kicking distance and looks to see if he can give the ball to another player rather than focus on kicking it. That is the sign of a player with no confidence in his ability.

At the moment Mitch's form is pretty mediocre and we should not reward mediocrity. The SANFL is the place for Mitch until he gets his kicking yips right. I note that Mitch has been named at full forward for the Port Magpies and that is exactly the place for him as it should give him the opportunity to kick some goals and regain confidence in his ability. Of course a lot will depend on the port Magpie side getting the ball to him but that is a different issue.

Meanwhile we still have Dixon, Marshall, Finlayson and Rioli up forward in the AFL.

It was a slightly improved performance by Mitch today mainly by him trying hard. His best moments came at ground level. He wasn’t great aerially though. He’s consistently mistiming his efforts to approach the marking contests, usually running under the high ball. Was also outmarked too often today. Still he didn’t give up trying and he looked a bit pacier when chasing the ball on the deck.

Was good and dangerous because he was again on the move, not playing from behind trying to jump over blokes.

As good as he is as a Forward Pocket right now, he needs to play the High Half Forward role until he evolves into Hodges mk2.

Think Mitch is certain to come back in this week.

There’s going to be changes if we lose and all Mitch needed to come back in was some evidence his confidence was back up.

Amongst the best players and 3 good shots on goal in a sanfl side that is struggling is as good as we are going to get from him.

There’s nobody else we are bringing in that brings as much to the table.
