Player Watch Pick #18 (2019) - Mitch Georgiades

They're saying that it's no coincidence that they are the only 2 drafted KPFs that have seen any extended run in the seniors, and that your Mitch Harveys, Riley Grundys and Ollie Lords aren't really much chance of making it no matter how much development you give them.

I thought it was a point well made, but I will say though that Ladhams, Howard and probably Hayes are three examples of late pick wins that Hinkley and co have still ****ed up through terrible management of young talls and a massive lack of respect for their value whether it be giving them a run of games, keeping them in a distinct role or even in their trade value when you give them the flick.
Thanks for the polite clarification. Appreciated. My misunderstanding.

Yep, and that's why Todd looks like the first genuine KPF we've had for a long time.

People have been hanging s**t on Hinkley for George (and previously Marshall) for not being up to scratch and saying it's because he's failed to develop a KPF in his time at the club. But when the other stock he's had to work with have been Mitch Harvey and Mason Shaw, it's easy to see why that might be the case.
Got you. Thanks for that. My misunderstanding.

Yeah this.

Any other club and Todd would have an extra 20 odd games or more behind him. Hinkley was slow to trust him, and the only reason he stuck with Todd at all is that Todd is a generational freak in terms of his skill set / movement.
Yeah potentially.

Also Todd did have some injuries and was grieving the loss of his parents.

Hinkley may not have backed him or maybe he was managing him around injuries, grief and the normal processes that a KPF goes through in their development.

Developing talls is hard and I agree that Hinkley hasn’t always backed them in when we would have liked and hasn’t kept to structure as we have thought he should. As per my previous Mitch post, we haven’t always had the cattle and Ken actually has given a run to young talls.

Whilst Ken isn’t a great coach, and he should be moved on, I think it’s not accurate to criticise his development of players.

I don’t know if it is his action that’s changed, our game plan and use of him or a change in his mental approach but his issues currently for me all stem from his inaccuracy.

Did the maths the other day so going from memory and may be slightly off but he’s dropped from 64% accuracy to 46% between his first two years and the last year and a bit now.

That’s a pretty significant change in accuracy over a prolonged period.

To go with that, over that same second period he’s actually averaging more shots on goal per game then he was in his first 2 years. Only different, for whatever reason he just cannot convert consistently any more.

Fix that and we have the George we all watched the first 2 years and saw a huge future for. If he can’t fix it and continues at less than 50% accuracy, we’ll that probably won’t cut it as a tall forward in the modern game. The days of getting 6/7/8+ shots regularly are over. If he’s getting 4/5 a game, he needs to be converting like he was in his first couple years.

Personally from his pre season form and rd1, I would have considered giving Mitch a run in the twos last week and hid him against Collingwood.

However given the match ups this week, I would have backed in him in a home showdown hoping he'd find some confidence back in his game.

I'd have be livid if he was being replaced by Neade or Sam Gray, however it's Finlayson and if Jeremy is up and about and ready to go then the extra coverage in the ruck is probably justified.

Up to Mitch now to show he's hunger and put some pressure to regain his place.

Just watch the way his body is positioned when he kicks through the ball on a set shot. He seems to be horribly twisted. I cannot see him becoming a reliable shot with his current action. Re inventing the wheel may take a bit of time but i feel it’s necessary as he is horribly balanced when he kicks for goal.

It begs the question what he and the coaches were doing all pre season. It had to be the main focus for him but it seems he has only gotten worse. Confidence is down yes but his technique leaves a lot to be desired.

Kernel ****ley doesn't believe in training skills.

This team is winning nothing this year, so I can’t see the point in dropping MG.. give him an extended run..

When WA come calling it’s not going to be hard to convince him to return if he’s playing seconds. Whilst senior players are playing just as bad if not worse and staying in the side

Unfortunately this is hinkley coaching for his career rather than putting the team
First

I think he is gone at seasons end.
Yeah reckon he might. West Coast's first pick will be juicy.

If we clean out all the deadwood next season, coach, Boak, Jonas, DBJ, Lycett, and we get a really good KPB/KPF, plus any of Visentini/Scully/McCullum come on we might be on the right path.

I can live with a forward line consisting of Dixon/Finlayson/Marshall. DIxon obviously isnt a long term option, so we definately need Scully to progress.

If only we had an ex player with a perfect goal kicking routine who was willing to offer his services to the club.

Oh yes that is right, the dumb asses at the club told Schulz that he was not required.

West coasts pick will be too juicy. They won’t pay a top 5 pick when PSD is a real threat

And if we’re being honest he isn’t worth a top 5 pick

Hopefully its just a one weeker. He needs to be perservered with
If he kicked even half of his opportunities, we wouldnt at all be having this conversation.

Option 2. Play SANFL for 3-4 weeks to turn his goal kicking and confidence around.
Why is there an assumption on this board that goalkicking is somehow going to be easier in the SANFL? Maybe he'll just kick 1.5 instead of 1.3 and get even lower on confidence.

Didn't think he was that terrible against Collingwood. Had 14 disposals, took 7 marks kicked 1.2.

In a forward line that didn't see much of the ball.

He needs to play with more authority, he looks passive - it's just mind set with him.

Yeah this.

What??? 20 extra games at another club at least??? When?

  • In 2017 we finished 5th with the below forward line
  • 1680223728881.png

  • In 2018 he took indefinite leave from the club after the tragic death of his father after playing the first 4 senior games of the season. That is largely why he only played 7 games that season and understandably so. To say that Hinkley only picked him 7 completely misrepresents the tragic events of that season.

  • In 2019 Todd played 6 of the first 8 games, averaging 0.5 goals, under 3 marks and under 9 possessions a game. His GA to that point was 33% After that he had a spell in the magpies before coming back to play the last 4 games of the season.
So tell me which other club would have given Todd an extra 20 games at least based on that history. Is it that Hinkley was slow to trust Marshall or did it have more to do with the fact that there were other forwards who earned their spot above Marshall, the tragic deaths of his parents, and Marshall's own performances?

Additionally, if you are suggesting that no other player in this generation has had Todd's skillset/movement as evidenced to date please let me know what that skillset is and I will see if I can post a list of at least 10 players that have. Or is this actually a quote from Hinkley somewhere you can refer me to?
