AFL Player #31: Zach Reid

Another piece of the puzzle why we have been languishing. Even going back a bit most of our best/top pick forward talents have struggled to get on the park for prolonged periods or had injuries that robbed them of their potential - Gumby, Joe, Orazio, Davey, Jetta.
Myers and Hurley come to mind. But that’s going back a bit now…

Good point - Hurley would have been a superstar forward but kept destroying his wrists to the point he was unable to mark on the lead full tilt so had to go down back. I guess we can't expect every player to be fit and healthy but if most of our top picks are generally on the park it will make a big difference.

Spotted him at the supermarket. I’m a big guy (6’4) and he ******* dwarfed me. I am completely unsurprised he’s had back issues, his back is longer than humans are designed to be
I saw a photo of him the other day next to Nik Cox - below

Reid is only listed at 202m but he dwarfs Cox who is apparently 200cm. Cox has his boots off - but there's surely more than 2 cms in it.

Training out on the oval!

Press conference got a few questions about him Call Me Cake (you should claim him as your boy btw)

Q: Young Reid getting closer?

Yeah he could probably play this week, he won't play though because just been really consistent with the conservative approach and we've built up his training loads over time. I've said to him repeatedly that I'm going to drive him insane over the short term because we're really focused on the medium to long term with him. So he's medically clear to play but we think another solid week of training and then he'll play the following week.

Q: Presume a block in the VFL to see how he goes?

Yeah most likely, hopefully not too long a block, but certainly some VFL footy before he's considered for AFL selection.

Q: In terms of you've got some really talented young guys on your list. He's sort of one that hasn't got a real taste of AFL footy compared to the other guys. In terms of talent, where do you sort of see him in the pecking order? There's some suggestions that he could really come on quickly.

Oh yeah, but we're not sort of pushing him to come on really quickly. You look at a lot of talls across the competition and Reidy is a very capable player and one that you very quickly as a coach get excited about. But you know talls can take a bit longer and we're really keen to just get that block of work into him so that when he does come in he stays in. Our common practice at the moment we want to give guys Patrick Voss is another one in the VFL who has been playing really well, but we want to set them up to succeed when they come in. So we're excited about Reidy and Nik Cox, and they've had a taste of AFL footy and as I said when they come in we want to see them for the long term

Ridley - BZT - Kelly
Redman - Reid - McGrath

Laverde: 193cm, 92kg
Reid: 202cm, 90kg (unless these are not revised numbers)

Obviously comes back through the VFL, so maybe a few weeks away. Reid's height and class with the ball are clearly needed back there but his weight still worries me. I think he needs another 10 or so kilos. That would make him Peter Wright size.

On one hand I would like to see him preserved. A player like Lynch or Naughton would just crunch him. On the other hand he'll be a clear upgrade on Laverde.

He's only just turned 21, plenty of time to gain weight. Talls take a long time, BZT was 24 by the time he'd showed some form at AFL level as he gained the weight he needed.

It's the size and strength issue for Reid moreso than form at the level. When he has played he has been able to show composure and ability that I was much more comfortable with than with BZT at first. He should get game time here and there along the way, maybe only when there are injuries. I just fear for his life when he does get to play.

His ceiling is elite, has a great kick and composure, is the perfect height for a modern KPP and has a good tank. If he can get some continuity I think he'll be fine, Ridley struggled to start his career then once his body settled has been great.
