GIANTS DEFENDER TO CASH IN ON HOT START TO 2023

Lachie Ash will ramp up talks with GWS after the first month of the season following the timeline of his first contract extension with the Giants.

Ash has started the season back in his old position as a running defender and is averaging 24 possessions and 498 metres gained.

He has happy at the club and expected to be locked in soon, but No. 1 overall pick Aaron Cadman is no hurry yet to sign the usual two-year contract extension.

Country boy Cadman couldn’t have fitted in better at the Giants but is yet to debut, so isn’t rushing the two-year extension that usually sees first-round picks handed a salary of between $400,000 and $500,000 in their third and fourth years.

GIANTS SWINGMAN IN HIGH DEMAND

GWS Giants’ utility Harry Himmelberg is in no hurry to re-sign at the club as rivals circle the Riverina product.

Himmelberg, 26, is one of the leading targets in this year’s free agency pool which is light-on for top-end talent other than Essendon’s Darcy Parish and St Kilda midfielder Jade Gresham.

The Giants want to keep Himmelberg and have been buoyed by recent talks.

But the key forward won’t rush the decision as the Giants kickstart a new era under new coach Adam Kingsley.

Himmelberg has kicked two goals from his first three games of the season alongside Jesse Hogan and Jake Riccardi.

But the Giants could change up the key forward mix soon in a bid to unleash No. 1 pick Aaron Cadman.

PLAYERS PUSH BACK ON MID-SEASON TRADING

The AFL player union would want significant protection for financially vulnerable players if the league introduced a mid-season trade period.

Collingwood coach Craig McRae was the latest AFL figure to strongly push for the introduction of greater player movement this week.

But the AFL’s players are hesitant about a mid-season trade period given many are on relatively modest salaries and could be moved interstate with only a few days’ notice.

Last year’s pay bands showed that 125 players were paid between $100,000-$200,000 and another 126 paid between $200,000-$300,000.

That is more than a quarter of the AFL men’s workforce, and while NBA millionaires are often traded mid-season the AFL players would be financially disadvantaged having to uproot families interstate with little notice.

Some clubs would also like the power to trade players without their approval.

The AFLPA is always open to considering ideas like extra trade periods given it could give players increased opportunities.

But there has been no real movement early in this year’s CBA talks on a mid-season trade so it will likely remain an annual discussion topic rather than a short-term reality.

SOLACE FOR INJURED GIANT

First-year Giant Darcy Jones has one less worry as he comes to terms with spending a year out of football after rupturing an ACL playing in the VFL at the weekend. Jones, a first-round pick out of Swan Districts, is another of Seccull’s clients, and they were in advanced negotiations with Greater Western Sydney football boss Jason McCartney before his setback. The Giants assured them that the 19-year-old small forward’s knee injury will not have an impact on his future, and he is likely to score a two-year extension within the next month. Jones will have surgery next week.

All positive talk at the moment.
If Himmelberg can secure big money elsewhere, good luck to him, but we can't match. I'd like to keep him , but a big contract probably hurts long term retention too much.

I agree. As much as I'd like to keep him as a NSW/ACT player, academy graduate etc, the value of those guys was surely meant to be the loyalty and "home" factor such that they'd re-sign for less. If we have to pay a premium for them, then we need to ensure that we are getting exactly what we want in terms of value to the team (and understand what we might be giving up for that extra $), and if it's not right for the team then we can only say "thanks, but sorry".

At the moment, HH is not necessarily (IMHO) earning his keep as second KPF, and while he has value being able to play down back, we have other options in
the wings there (primarily Aleer, but Cam Fleeton is still in the wings, and Derksen & Gruzewski could be trialled as KPDs too).

Up forward, we still have Cadman, Derksen and Gruzewski in the wings to try (as well as Riccardi of course). Gruz played both forward and back in his U18 career, so could potentially grow into a player of similar mould.

As much as I hate some of the crap reporting around the $ tied up in Greene/Coniglio/Kelly/Whitfield contracts, we certainly cannot be adding guys to that list who are not contributing at the highest level to the team. If he was Jezza-esque and kicking 50 or 60 goals per year it would be a different story, but he's not, and I don't see that he will.

Very left field suggestion Re-himmelberg.
Playing him as an undersize ruck (Shaun Grigg style), sure he'll lost the hitouts (but he competes enough they cant put it wherever they want), but he'll run the pants off any ruck and is a decent bail out mark option and would offer another method of entering 50. If we are going to play a fast brand, that sort of selection certainly suits.
Look, it is very different, but a thought I had watching Harry in the ruck last week.

Basically Silvagni with better skills ?

More like how Port ran Jeremy Finlayson as their ruckman last year at times when they didn't have a decent first option.

Harry is a fair bit more physical than TOJ IMO. But not too dissimilar.

I would love to keep Himmelberg as he is from ACT/ NSW and it’s good to see a “local kid” from our target region in our team. But I get it that we need to not pay excessive $, and hope that we and HH come to a mutually beneficial agreement

All well and good but Himmelberg gets pushed around enough in our forward line imagine how dominated he will be around the ground. I vote we move him on and hopefully get another first round pick or late first round pick as compensation for him. Probably will end up at the Crows to be with his brother and play as a CHB for them

Unless he gets solid time in the backline where he will shine much more, I can see us parting ways with Harry at the end of the year.

Good news with the contract extension for Rowston and I see it as standard for an academy graduate and he has looked solid for a 1st year player and seems to be a good size already just need to stay injury free for development purposes
HH has been a bit of a disappointment to start the season and wether that is adjusting to the new system/coaches or just underdone to start the season. I do hope the club re-signs him but just so long as it doesnt overpay as he is solid but not a star and his salary should reflect that. my concern is that the tall forward stocks are very inexperienced after Hogan and he is no guarantee to run out a season and I cant see the club going far with a combo of Riccardi + Cadman if HH leaves and Hogan has a significant injury. Could do a swap with the Swans HH for Macdonald (Amartey is more realistic)

Sad for DJ and the knee but hopefully he rehabs well and it will be an opportunity to add some size later on before coming back so he can have the strength to match the mature bodies adn it does open up the opportunity to add a player in the mid season draft if the club feels the need

A read on some of the higher rated prospects at this time of the year although plenty can change as more games are played

I see a need in the forward half of the ground with tall forward for the top pick and depending on list decisions at the end of the year it could be a developing ruck/tall defender. Highest rated tall is Walter from the Suns academy and after that depending on interviews and willingness to relocate Caddy, Reid and Morris are other options if the club looks at talls. Others will impress as the season progresses

Plenty of forwards on the list which is exactly what we're after, good mix of smalls, mediums and KPF in that top 20.

It's amazing that ESPN managed to replace one of the biggest fraud's in draft watching with his main contender for the title

If they watch just the televised games they're a step ahead of KM
I agree with Knightmare on one issue. We stuffed up last trade period. Surely we could have got Cadman and Phillipou last trade period.
North wasn't taking Cadman over Sheazel in a million years.
