Perhaps you’re right

She certainly knows how to find the ball and is clean in traffic. Strong.

But I worry about her acceleration and explosiveness at the the next level.

She has many good positives no doubt about it. Athletically - she’s still got work to do
She is not a sprinter, never will be. But the big thing for me watching her middle distance running develop she'll be able to get to the next contest, then the next. And if you are one of those players who can break lines, how much do you want a player like Henry at the coal face feeding you, aka Priddis et al.

I've only ever seen her play for Swans twice and both games she was down back (but have seen juniors), so my observations come from other sport mostly. She has the work ethic and commitment, and is very coachable. The other intangible is the quality of the person, she's a future leader and the younger athletes always looked up to her. Yes I'm probably biased, but my bias has been built over many years of seeing her compete.

No disagreement from me. I’ve watched Jamie play for 3-4 seasons now at all different levels.

I just have concerns at AFLW level.

A weapon that is largely needed at the next level.
There are a large number of not fast good players in both mens and womens. Its just that if your good, not being fast isnt noticeable.

A good player is where the ball goes, and a fast player runs quickly to where it is, which means the good player gets there first.

I've been saying for a while the U16 age group in WA is getting pretty scary, and here's the proof -- 10,15, 75 to 2,3, 15 over Vic Country. And that's without Carys D'Addario, who would have been huge in a game like this.

Country just looked completely physically outmatched, the WA girls were faster, taller, tackled harder. Country got rushed, panicked into kicking the ball long, and WA has six players 175cm or taller, while Country only has two, so those rushed kicks just gave them marking practise.

WA's four best talls were standouts for me -- Wolmarans had a crap day with skills but still a huge impact from sheer physical presence, then Crane and Cowcher as always, and I still reckon Bilzard's a little slower than she has been (big wrap on her knee?) but height, speed and skills, all top notch.

Then of the mids, Mia Russo's a gun, Renee Morgan's good, and little Sienna Gerardi's an excitement machine up forward, think Courtney Hodder. Also going to keep an eye on Macy Fair, Tayah Nicolson (tackling machine), India Bonadeo and Lina Morrone (178cm, was playing in the midfield for a while).

If you can only watch two bits, check out 1:25;30, where Mia Russo hits Wolmarans on a lead. W then stuffs up the kick (again), but the speed on the lead from a 183cm kid is something else.

Then 1:51:20, for a nice mark by Russo again, followed by a great run up the wing by Blizard. Who again stuffs the kick (though she was great most of the game) but 176cm, nice speed, going to be a player.

I firmly believe shes gotten to tall too quick and has lost co-ordination

Would make sense. I reckon she'll get it back, though. She's different. Last year her skills were great.

Too young to pplay even Rogers footyball yet. Scary.
Looks like a unit. Her and D'Addario in the same team would be scary.

I reckon she must have been leading possession winner, she had it a lot. Crazy to think that she might only be the fourth or fifth WA pick in the draft that year, because there's so many freakish talls.

Vic Country beat Vic Metro in the earlier game, so we've got the Vics covered. SA next week will be interesting, but I reckon we'll probably beat them too.

Also raises the worrying prospect for the AFLW that Victorian talent development isn't as strong as everyone thought. SA would probably beat a combined Vic team, now WA, maybe Queensland. Ten teams depend on the Vic talent pool. Certainly they don't have many talls, maybe they're losing more of them to basketball and netball than the other states.

Country just looked intimidated in the end. Every time a player succeeded in stepping a tackle, they just turned into 2 more. And some of the WA ball movement was very good. We beat them on the inside and on the outside.

The difference was physical pressure, no question.

On second thought, the Vics poor performance might be more that WA girls play in WAFLW, like SA girls play in SANFL, etc. Vic girls play in Coates Talent League, which is all juniors. It works fine for the boys, but the physical difference between a 16 year old boy and a man is much bigger than between a 16 year old girl and a woman. Maybe the Vics just need to promote their top girls to VFLW much earlier, of they're going to keep getting smashed in the national champs.

Interesting concept - giving Melbourne football advice!!! Not seen the AFL seek much input like that.

No, let's just keep WA footballers for WA clubs until we start to dominate. As soon as SA and WA gets too strong, I am sure the suits at AFL headquarters will find the right incentives for the AFLPA to get the $$ right to support FT meaning a national draft.

I am liking the look of the talent coming through in the next 3 years and there would be more than enough for us and Freo to wax.

Loving the way Rookie me Central is covering the talent. They actually are one of the better Vic based football media outfits that actually get their heads out of Melbourne.

WESTERN Australia proved too strong for Vic Country in Pool A of the AFL Women’s Under 16 Championships, storming to a 60-point win at Arden Street today. Aside from a arm-wrestle first 10 minutes, the visitors took control and won each of the four quarters with the additional senior experience at WAFL Women’s level paying dividends, 10.15 (75) to 2.3 (15).

Some of the girls that were part of the team are only 14. WAFW football is surging and coming hard.

Interesting to see how many of them are actually impacting at a WAFLW level.

Evie Cowcher
15 year old Peel – 173 cm utility

Mia Russo

Olivia Wolmarans
15 year old – 180 cm KPP

India Bonadeo
14 year old Claremont - 174 cm utility

Renee Morgan
15 year old South Fremantle 169 cm utility

Sienna Gerardi
15 year old Swan Districts – 168 cm utility

I noticed at the WAFLW GF last year how the Rogers Cup match had the girls with much higher skills and confidence compared to games a2 and 3 years ago.

She’s not played a league game. Where are these stats from?

EDIT: ahh those are Craneys stats 👌🏽

She’s definitely not a utility either - mid or forward pocket once she gets to league

And they are only getting stronger and better. Very good news outlet for the women.

I’m calling any 14 and 15 a utility that’s not a tall. So much can happen in 2 and 3 years so I didn’t want to get into the mid or flanker inside or outside debate

Ahh fair enough.

I am blessed to watch this kid grow as a footballer since her Wanneroo days, she’s a line breaker, kick first footballer.

She’s a gun

Some of them seem to be shrinking, based on previous measurements. Except for Gerardi -- 168cm standing on a box, maybe.

The gap between 2005 born players and 2007 born is nuts. I doubt the WA U18 team will beat SA on the weekend, because their 2005s are so much better. But the WA 2006 class is great, and the 2007 class is bonkers. Probably more talent among the 2007s alone than came through the WA draft for the last four years combined.

I don’t think they’ll score.
I don't think it'll be that bad. Our bottom agers might be equal to theirs. But sure, their top-age lineup looks scary.

We got eaten up last champs with WA fielding a far stronger side.

Its gonna be a long arse day for the 18s girls.

I know. But there were no 2006s in that team, a slaughter was inevitable. Half the team is new and massively improved. Unfortunately it's the less experienced half who won't have as much impact, so we'll lose, but not by as much.
