I'm trying to let your first half of that go and I will.

The rest I agree with.
I didn’t see a problem with their game.
They went at the ball every chance they got. That’s all you want from guys going in, and they both showed signs that they could play in the firsts.

Rich and Zorko won’t be around for much longer, and I would be comfortable with those two if they got put in again.

I've been making this case for a few weeks.

Reminds me a lot of Rance and how he suddenly just went from average to elite.
Im curious who has kicked goals on him? Would love to see the reverse Coleman as he's been manning some big names and taking a lot of intercept marks

Just got home from the game and the thing that annoyed the crap out of me more than any other game was the amount of times we got the ball and tackled straight away and all we heard all night ( maybe not the last quarter) was ball all the time. Carlton supporters learn the god damn rules will you. Good win by the boys.

How bad was it , they deadset have no idea.

just got home, good first live game for the year. was sitting next to a lovely hawthorn supporter for the first half and we had a good discussion on how wily gunston is. second half got to enjoy the melts from carlton supporters.

dunkley incredible. just wow.

thought two of the whipping boys in gunston and answerth were very good tonight. gunston is such a clever player. that passage where it was a 2v2 in the forward pocket and he tapped the ball to camerons advantage and then put the block on as he strolled into goal was magnificent. short lead out to mccluggage catching carltons defence napping similar. answerth very good defensively, intercepted well and pressured like a maniac. ball use has cleaned up a bit too.

a lot of credit should go to payne and andrews for how well they handled carltons talls but at the ground could really appreciate how well set up we were. carltons defenders playing kick mark in their back line for a lot of the second and third quarters were due to them looking upfield and seeing absolutely nothing available. we were structured beautifully and the long kicks down the line didnt work in carlton's favour either. curnow and mckay did not really get a chance to impact the game through our ability to pressure and stifle carlton ball movement whereas on the way back they crumbled with how efficiently we were moving through the corridor at times. being able to do this whilst missing two of our elite field kicks in zorko and rich is a very positive sign.

sharp did some good things. needs to polish up disposal. happy for him to get a run of games.

dunkley incredible. just wow.
Fantastic game!

Busted his gut in the last quarter when it looked like the wheels if not falling off, were looking a bit wobbly for the team .

A big bodied defensive mid is just what we needed and Dunks fits that bill perfectly.

11 marks and 13 tackles......THIRTEEN!!!!!

Love the guy to pieces

Not long back from the game. Professional performance. Actually thought our second quarter was excellent and could have iced the game by half time. Payne? Fantastic, nice bonus. Also Dunkley. Thought a couple of the young boys, wilmot and Ashcroft, worked hard. Going over the top to Cameron one on one always looks like a return is likely even if he isn't the one to slot the goal.

Not detracting from the result, but I really thought Carlton were poor all over the ground. Be surprised if they make finals.

Sharp not at AFL Level

I'd be pretty strong on the fact that a guy like Sharp is a bit like Payne. Give him 5+ guaranteed games in a row and I reckon he'd blossom into an AFL standard player pretty quickly. He took a while to grow into the game tonight (was like a deer in headlights at the start) but he did improve as the night went on and it was nice to see him get on the scoresheet at the end for a bit of icing on the cake.

And alongside Sharp you can throw in guys like Dev and Fullarton. Just frustrating that it's very much catch-22 for these guys: their performances at AFL level don't warrant continued selection, but without continued selection they are less likely to reach AFL standard.

Fantastic win guys, really well done. I tipped you then saw that Zorko and Rich were out and almost changed my mind. Glad I didn't.

Great team game, showed up Carlton as pretenders. Could be the year of the Lions.

My word I'm looking forward to Round 11 (which I know is bad because one week at a time and all that). You guys play the right way and I think most of the time we try to as well so it should be a cracker. Sunday 4:40 is becoming the marquee slot right!?

Surely somebody is going to make a meme of Curnow in the bath tub or in Payne's pocket or something?

(Don't ask me; whenever I get asked to do anything creative it comes out looking like an XL spreadsheet with no formatting!)

I thought McCluggage was good in the second half last week and really carried that into this week. We are seeing really complete performances from the team. The whole team for the whole match, and you can see the level of trust that the squad have in each other

Every time the instruction comes out to slow the game down we seem to overdo it and get into a little trouble.

We've got enough experienced players out there now who are in the best position to make that call if we need to.
THIS.

Yes, we absolutely DO need to be able to play at multiple tempos. We absolutely WILL need this ability at some stage in the season.

Yes, this ability would have been EXTREMELY useful against Richmond at the MCG last year. That game when I commented to my mates with me in the 2nd tier of the Shane Warne Stand halfway through the 2nd term "boys I tell you what, this is a fast game. If you're gonna come from behind, this is what the game looks like."

NO, we absolutely did NOT need to pull that playing style out of the kit bag late in the third quarter, and roll with it for most of the last quarter. This was a completely different game to that Richmond game. We'd conceded 1 goal in 2 quarters, we had ground Carlton right into the Docklands dust (or is it sand?), and they were completely shot mentally. Keep at them, put the first one on the board in the last quarter and watch them roll over like they did against Adelaide.

Even if, completely against the run of play, they had kicked 2 quick ones to start the last quarter, THAT is the time to switch up our playing style. Still 5 goals up, probably maximum 15-16 minutes to go, even if they get the next one after that, if it takes 5 minutes it's still very hard for them to win from there.

We haven't conceded more than 3 consecutive goals since Round 2 (yep, 6 games without conceding a run of more than 3 goals). Why not actually show faith in our defence and our defensive system, instead of feeling the need to save a game we already have won?

Yes, it is absolutely important to respect our opponent, which is what Fages is getting at when he says "we expect the best version of <team>". But that respect need not, and should never, extend to "fear", yet that's how the last quarter looked to me.

Live at the ground, I'm pretty firm in my belief that the obvious change to our playing style in the last quarter and a bit was coached, not player driven. And even though it was executed quite poorly, I'm also convinced it was the wrong strategy to engage in the first place.

Everything else, like everyone else said, massive tick. First quarter was perhaps a bit more high scoring than both coaching groups would have liked, but that can often be because the other team are doing things that were unexpected. We adapted really well after that and forced Carlton to completely disintegrate in all facets of the game.

Onwards and upwards. Still feels like we're only getting started.

Thought Gunston was terrific tonight. A lot of great defensive actions which I'm not sure were noticed by others?

Outstanding win. Was a pleasure to watch the Carlton fans streaming out of the ground late in the 3rd qtr.

Was a great team performance. So many good players and role players - Dunkley was obviously exceptional. Best game he has played for our club. He was tough in the clinches but won lots of ball as well. It meant that Neale having a rare quiet night didn't effect our performance.

Andrews and Payne did a fantastic job down back. Helped by a midfield that forced Carlton to rush kicks into forward 50. But, Harris and Payne have had great seasons so far. Both reading the ball well and backing themselves. Special mention to Starecvich who won a couple critical 50/50 contests early in the game that set the standard for our night.

Froggy Lester - not sure how it looked on the tv but at the ground he was brilliant. Took some strong intercept marks but also crashed a few packs and took out the Carlton players with him. Really strong game and so underrated. Definitely best 22 on that performance.

Good to the see the brothers back to their best - McCluggage and Berry. Zac Bailey also can be put in same boat. He crumbled so well tonight. Was at the right place at the right time. Oscar rucked well and had some nice taps to our mids.

Charlie exciting as ever. Wilmot won a 50/50 ball and then delivered it lace out to one of our forwards - was a brilliant passage of play and shows how much talent he posses.

Only lowlights for me on an excellent evening was Rayner didn't get much of it - McCarthy looked sore and I really hope the poor lady who fell from the second level to the first level before the match is not seriously injured.

Everyone has said it already. I was at the game and we looked great. Answerth had a good game, vindicating his selection. Sharp looked like the ‘work experience kid’ out there. He was too easily brushed off the contest and his disposal was poor. I think we can do better.
Having been critical late last season and after the Port Adelaide and Footscray games, I have to say that Payne was fantastic last night. He has done a complete 180 degree turn in terms of application, impact and form. He is taking the game on and spoiling contests with authority. He is also reading the play well and his intercept marking has been great. If he was a race horse the stewards would swab him for sure. He is playing his game in the air and not on the ground, which is where he is strongest.
