I think the main issue is just that Aussie rules is a really hard game to umpire and fans and especially the media have unrealistic expectations. Nothing shits me more than the need to show a thousand replays of 50/50 decision immediately after the final siren of a great game.

Done it it isn't that hard. I suspect the AFL issue is that it is politicised and directions to umpires reflect more on PR needs that the game.

Add to that constant changes, the implications and needs of adjudicating them, haven't been thought through.

Disagree. There are many examples of the more high profile players being given far more opportunity to release a ball than those less well known. It's though the umpire gets mesmerised by certain players and what they can do.
