I didn’t want Simmo to go. I afforded him a lot of leeway to understanding that there was not much he could do about the injuries and it’s not like we will get anyone better to guide us through this ordeal.

I think today was the nail in the coffin.

The players are not playing for him and I think his relationship is too close to them to be able to make the statements or instil the fear in this playing group that their careers hang by a thread.

Perhaps this will only come with the changing of the guard and a new coach with no ties to this lot.

No one is going to remember Simpson as a good coach anymore.

Shame.

He's hot garbage now

He should have resigned, earlier. He would have had a career going forward. He is now unemployable.

His press conferences are about as inspirational as doctor telling you that you have a week left to live I find

He literally tells his players they shouldn’t be playing AFL and they are not up for it and then is bemused when they don’t put their body on the line. If Adam was in the front line of the war trenches and he has his troops his talk would be

”Not sure why they gave you guns, you will be the first group to die. Won’t even get a shot off. Now guys, let’s get in a huddle and put our bodies on the line, we can win this”

Like you can’t tell people they are not worthy and expect them to fight for you.... they will throw their arms down and go home.

The worst bit of coaching of all Simmos coaching was his constant decision to put Ginbey on Warner and have him mark him. Warner is wayyyy too fast for Ginbey to man up. At 3/4 time Warner lined up on Ginbey, burnt him 3 times and in the next contest Ginbey still has Warner

To use war again as the example that was tossing someone into the meat grinder that one. Ginbey needs to hunt the hall in and under, not chase the teams fastest and fittest midfielder from the spread. He was set up to fail today well and truly

Right now Simmo is coaching like a guy who has given up, he just wants to be sacked and walk away with his millions.
The board dont want to sack him because its going to cost too much
The players dont want to play for him or Nisbett and co
Nisbett is too pig headed / arrogant / proud to walk away when the club is on its knees

So.. we have a stalemate

the best way to resolve this is to vote with our feet and not show up to games anymore
that will force somebody's hand and a change will come

Not going to change anything. Nisbett could be at the game by himself and a tub of his own bath water and he still would think everyone loves him

He is too far gone mentally to leave.

Simmo is the stubborn and arrogant one. He should and does know better but his ego is in the way. His ego is the Great Wall of China. It’s never coming down im afraid

Why would Simmo leave though?
He has 2 + years on his contract, and he knows things will improve a little bit next year
He would be giving up $2 million plus
he's just mailing it in now

Have to find whoever spooked McGowan into quitting by the looks of it

Crikey. Watched the post game presser.

Not sure if Simpson or Ol' Gil

It's pathetic to the point you feel sorry for the bloke all over again.

Surely they need to put the curtains up and spare the man any more pain.

You left out an afl club lives to virtue signal and we are one of the best.
Don’t forget the club last year said its most important thing was community.. not football

Gets harder and harder to hold that line when the community is sitting at home, working, at the pub……doing anything rather than paying their hard earned to watch an Opusticle shiteshow.

A full rebuild requires a change of gameplan and fitness. From the start you implement a defensive structure and you prioritize fitness, hard work and repeat efforts. Then you start adding to it every year opening up things with more attack. Pretty much what Adelaide have done under Nicks.

West Coast have not done this at all, and I think the reason is that Simpson and the coaches know they can't get the current group to do the work. As far as the preseason goes most senior players are on managed schedules, Ryan + SPS continue to opt out of heavy training and the likes of Rotham don't want to push themselves. Same for the defensive side of things, Sheed + Kelly will not defend the midfield Shuey's body won't let him do it and the fwds apart from young Long will not put repeat pressure on. So Simpson focused on quicker offensive ball movement, which he thought the players might buy into but right now is leading to turnovers and easy scores against.

Simpson must go but the club must support the new coach and force all the players to do a full preseason and defend the field during games. If players don't want to buy in they must go.
You succinctly put into words what i have been thinking for a while. Why are we focussing on the offensive side of our game and wanting a more risky gameplan requiring skills to pull off that are likely outside our current collective skillset when we are getting belted by 100 points regularly?

Defence is more about effort, mentality, organisation and team work as opposed to individual brilliance and thats where we should start. Focus on getting fitness and effort levels where they need to be and learning to and focussing on defending and then, once we can do that competently, start to add things on work on the offensive side of the game. Focussing on getting fast, slick, risk taking, offensively oriented ball movement from a very low skill playing list when we can't defend, and the effort levels and work rate are not there as a basic starting point is absurd.

The AFL industry would find him another job immediately. Everybody likes him. Especially in Melbourne. He would walk into a job somewhere as an assistant, list manager, development coach. The AFL would put him on their stupid committees. He might get a part time media gig. His income might be cut to 40% of what it is now but he wouldn't be unemployed. And he would not be exactly penniless. He would be filthy, filthy rich already. 10 - 15 years as a highly paid player and not 10 years as a highly paid senior coach. And i doubt he has been blowing all that money over the last 25 years on hookers and blow. I am sure most of it has gone into investments. I am not sure the money would be as important to him on here as everybody thinks.

The dire thing here is that we're seeing less collective effort with the return of senior players. It's a repetitive pattern - our best wins in the last couple of years have been when the old guard are entirely out, and the youth are given free reign. I've defended Simmo this year, and I genuinely believe he has the tactical nous to take a new roster to success again. I'm just starting to feel that he can't overcome this massive institutional lethargy - and that extends to the organisation. My other fear though, is that a new coach comes in and can't overcome Nissy. It would leave us travelling in circles, and I'd rather Simmo stay on into next year to avoid tainting the new coach with Nisbett energies.

If he wants another job as senior coach, you’d think he’s doing damage to his reputation.

I think it is now a fait accompli that Simpson will be gone by the end of the year. 50/50 that he goes this week or that it is announced this week that he is going at the end of the year. 95/5 that he is not the coach for next season.

What it comes down to is two things - firstly, the performances (and media commentary around them) becoming so bad that it panics the WAFC (who ultimately control the Board) into thinking that supporters won't stump up for memberships for next year without significant things hapenning that make them think that 2024 will be different, and therefore the WAFC will get a smaller royalty check in 2024 if the status quo continues. I think we are now at that place where that will be the prevailing view even amongst the most optimistic at the WAFC. Secondly, the Board themselves (independent of the WAFC) calculating that sticking with Simpson will put their own job and reputations at risk if this continues. Stick with Simpson and they own the results. Change the coach and if the results are still bad then at least they can say or claim that they have been proactive and made changes and that it will take some time for the changes to work. And so in that sense they can argue that they don't 100% own the immediate results if they are still bad.

Lets remember the WAFC got rid of Rosich and Lyon in 2019 even though Freo won 9 games for the season.

I think the entire Board should go aswell. If their best judgement at the end of 2022 was that we were going to make the 8 this year then they have been so far off the mark that they have no business being involved in any senior capacity, letting alone running, an AFL club.

Which is the complete different approach to Sam Mitchell who was on Sen a month ago saying he didn’t care if you were a first year player you are on a list and should be ready to go. The talent is there and it’s for him to get the most out of it.
