The early part of the year was fine. Change of game plan and effort was there. Would have won v flagmantle except for the 7 x injuries.

Even though we were flogged v Carltank, the effort was there.

It turned during the Hawks game.

Which is the complete different approach to Sam Mitchell who was on Sen a month ago saying he didn’t care if you were a first year player you are on a list and should be ready to go. The talent is there and it’s for him to get the most out of it.

Sure, but Mitchell has 38/39 players to choose from, compared to 26 for us.

So he is leaving out some guys who aren’t ready where we have to play them due to availability.

That doesn’t excuse lack of effort, the poor decisions that have been made and repeated around list management, contracting of older players, taking only 1 MSD pick even with evidence of significant availability issues, S & C underperformance, questions around player preparation etc… But there are guys playing for us because we have no one else rather than them being good enough, ready, fit, etc.

He is leaving them out because they are not good enough for his 22. Not because they are not good enough to play AFL

If they aint good enough to play AFL, then why pick them up? Just delist them already also. Stop wasting everyones time

A few factors cloud the situation. Players responding to coaching has to be one. A swayth of mid age players that are poor and should have been delisted is another. Years of poor drafting is another. Experienced players injured and losing fitness but required to return is another.

It was clear when the ground anouncer ran through that Swans team by position, we were in for a belting in every position.

Ginbey cracks in but is toio slow and ractive to be a true match winner. Hewett worked hard but is light weight (compared to oppoents) and currently is a ball butcher. With one set kick he absolutely ignored Maric on his own at 35m opting for a contest and the eventual turnover goal. He and a few others specialise in the turnover and hospital pass. Chesser showed some smarts, beaten but needs games. Long is a terrier but slow. Hopeful kids that will all develop but none are the class to be match winners.

We really dont have a ruckman.

The swans were overly predictable and even rehersed set plays in their warm up, you could regularly watch from the stand identifying their next two plays. No Eagle preempted this to defend against their direct opponent.
The team lacks running strength and fitness but footy IQ is the biggest cog missing. Drafting is the key. Quality mids are an absolute MUST.

We dont have leaders - nice blokes but no leaders.

It was a young and inexperienced team of probables and WAFL players - playing against the 15 placed AFL team at home. Witches hats in the headlights.

Our midfield was beaten in a pitiful manner. Our experienced mids were the best but several levels below the Swans effort, pace and skill. Mates on the fence could hear Sheed berating the kids for their efforts. Who would listen to Sheed?

Disagree about the Carlton game, turned up their toes in that one too

Hawks would still have a number of players not good enough for the AFL, as would every list. Difference is, we are being forced to play young players in key roles when they clearly aren’t good enough (yet).

Doesn’t excuse some of the duds on the list but Simmo isn’t entirely at fault here. Prime Clarkson couldn’t change these results.

Still think Simmo has to go because regardless of if he’s the right man for the job, it’s going to be very hard to turn this around with this current vibe at the club and only sweeping changes and fresh faces will get us back on track. Everyone is just so low on confidence and belief and the only way to change that is by cleaning up

Who would take over for the balance of the season? His senior assistants have the day to day coaching of players. They have failed so both Shofield and Knights can't be candidates.

Just get Schofield to coach out the season.

Give him a chance. You don't know if Simpson has been overriding the assistants
That's what I mean.

Just give him the rest of the year to see what ideas etc he has.

He may be able to get something out of someone.

Also if we want to keep Simmo due to money just make him sit on the bench and look like hes coaching but get Schoey in the box making the decisions.

Like Port are doing with Hinky and Josh Carr.

I don't think we would be in this mess in the first place under a prime Clarkson.

I also dont believe he would've stood for a culture of credits, bad long term contracts (which has disgruntled the team), been stubborn with a crap game plan, poor training standards, and harsh calls would've been made at the right time on out of form or declining players.

I also believe Clarkson, if he was in this present situation, would still be able to get good effort from players especially senior.

You're spot on about confidence and belief, that's the biggest reason Simmo needs to go, its so bad it'll ruin careers. Who would want to play footy for us or even in general right now. You can't develop or perform as a footy player in an AFL environment if you don't have confidence, its 90% between the ears.

If the young blokes don't get it from the older players that they respect for effort, intent and influence in a game then whatever confidence they had coming into the side will evaporate and they'll be mentally f*cked.

I mean what kind of a message did they send when Hewitt got hit by DeGoey? The senior players only care about themselves. Gaff is collecting at least $60k a month ffs. This is Simmos culture.

Honestly while Simpson isn't blameless, I think he's third on my list of targets after the board and the players themselves. They have to have some level of professional pride and you can just imagine the footage they'll be reviewing on Monday. Hardly chasing, or not at all, not contesting high balls...it was damning stuff. Simpson can't control that from the sidelines.

I find it hard to believe if he's lost the players. If he has, I think it's more on them. He clearly cares a lot for them and backs them to the hilt (often to our frustration at the moment). You'd think they'd be grateful and want to put on more of a show for him. If last night was their attempt to get rid of him, then they're not the sort of players I want anywhere near this organisation.

I think he tried a lot of things last night, and his hands are tied by the lack of numbers available, but he really needs to demonstrate he can make tough calls with selection and list management moving forward. Last time we did the right thing with a player or two, we won a flag the year after. Not saying that will happen here, but small changes can lead to big improvements.

As for the board, the list of off-field failures the club has put up since the GF are pretty well documented. I know my friends who have done work for the club recently with things such as jumper designs and the like have not felt very appreciated, and have taken their talents elsewhere. The song is a joke and fan engagement has only just recently been improved upon (step in the right direction).

TLDR - I wouldn't be firing Simmo at the moment. I suspect he may walk at the end of the season anyway.

The question is if this is correct how the hell are 7 of our players in the top 54 paid in the league…

If a player is underperforming... it's fair to say the player is at fault. When almost all the players are underperforming... it's fair to say it's the coaches fault. You can't sack 20+ players. You can sack your head coach.

When will this farcical situation come to an end?
So many smarmy Simmo backers earlier this year, pretty bloody quiet now.
No surprises there.
They are very, very quiet now. If you said anything against Simpson 12 months ago you were hunted through every thread and personally attacked by a rabid pack of them. If you criticised the contracts to the older players, said the list was diabolical, criticised the club for refusing to use the word "rebuild" and instead wanting to use the word "transition" it was the same thing. It was going to be just a seamless "transition" with no pain involved and if you didn't agree with that then you were a traitor.

The hunt for a new coach is going to have it's own problems. I think unanimous opinion is that we are 5 years away from playing finals again and 2 years away from properly bottoming out. No prospective coach will have confidence in the club being able to protect them for 5 years. The prevailing view will be that the next coach will just be cannon fodder who will be scapegoated and tossed aside after 3 years when the club needs to appease restless supporters anxious for a return to finals and sick of bottom 4 finishes. It will be hard to get quality candidates to apply.
