Nah.What does not push the kids to hard mean? They are 18 year old young men raring to go with all the energy anyone could dream of. They will be going hard as hell all the time naturally.
Maybe if we stopped treating them like 12 year old kids they would develop much quicker and be the player we actually thought we drafted. The sooner young players get the hang of it the better, no point holding them back in any way shape or form.
1. Kids struggle with the physical demands of the midfield in the first year. The body is not usually ready to handle it.
2. You're asking 18 year kids to go from playing their own age, to playing dudes 8 years older. 8 more years in the gym, 8 more pre-seasons, 8 years more experience. Daicos and Judd are unicorns. Most kids take a few years to be able to compete in the midfield.
An older, big bodied, experienced guy can take the heat off them. Whether it be through rotation, or just putting their body on the line. It's not coddling, it's just an easier transition.
