Perth Glory owner Tony Sage stripped of A-Leagues licence as club placed into receivership

Perth Glory owner and chairman Tony Sage’s reign is over, after he was sensationally stripped of his A-Leagues licence effective immediately by the league’s governing body.

The Australian Professional Leagues - the A-Leagues governing body - have placed the club into receivership, meaning Sage’s tenure at the helm of the club is over after 15 years as owner.

The APL sent a breach of notice to Okewood Pty Ltd - the company that owns the Glory and lists Sage as a director - on Tuesday.

The West Australian understands Perth Glory are not bankrupt and not about to be placed into administration, but the APL paid player’s wages at times during last season.

However, the APL had been chasing payment of a loan they had issued to the club - and several other A-Leagues franchises - during COVID.

That loan extended into last season, as the Glory dealt with the financial blow of having to shift 10 of their 13 home games from the 22,000-capacity HBF Park to the 4000-capacity Macedonia Park due to upgrades ahead of the Women’s World Cup.

Advisory firm KordaMentha has been appointed to manage the receivership process for the club, and ensure the club’s ongoing obligations of the club are met. The process is expected to conclude within the next 10 weeks.

Sage, who is currently overseas, released a statement saying he was sad his time had come to an end.

“As the sole owner of the club for the past 17 years I can say in all honesty that it has taken a huge financial effort on my family’s part to sustain it and ensure that, Perth WA, continues to be represented at the elite level of Australian football,” he said.

“In total, my family has invested close to $50 million into the club, including into our outstanding academy.

“This huge financial pressure was increased greatly and unsustainably by the impact of COVID-19 which decimated the club’s income streams and was then further compounded by our forced relocation from HBF Park last season for 10 of 13 home games.

“We are still in talks about compensation with the WA Government and trust they see the financial damage the relocation caused the Club especially after the 2 Covid ravaged seasons. .

“The culmination of these events, and the damage they have caused has made it all but impossible for us to continue financing the club and led directly to the position we find ourselves in today. With a clean slate the financial future of the. Club does look very bright

“It is with profound sadness that I can confirm my decision to step down as owner of this wonderful football club which is so close to my heart and will always remain so.

“I have often referred to Perth Glory as my fourth child and that provides an insight into just how profoundly difficult it is for me to step away.

“However, I have always maintained that everything I do is in the best interests of the club and that commitment underpins this decision.”

APL chief executive Danny Townsend said the move provided a clear path forward for the club.

“Perth Glory have faced incredibly difficult circumstances over the last five years and we are pleased to close off this period of uncertainty for players, staff, members and fans as they continue their preparations for next season,” he said.

“Here we have a process which allows for the club’s operations to continue ‘business-as-usual’, whilst the technical adjustments are made to the club’s ownership structure.

“Under this league structure, the continuity of our clubs is now guaranteed by the league.”

KordaMentha’s Andrew Knight said an orderly sale process for the Glory would commence immediately.

“While this process is being undertaken, the Receivers and Managers will continue to operate the Club in a ‘business as usual’ manner.”

Sage is currently overseas and has been contacted for comment, told The West Australian in April he had found an overseas-based buyer for a significant stake of the club, as escalating costs sustained during two COVID-19-affected seasons forced his hand.

A month later, he told The West Australian he hoped to have a new owner in place by the end of June, while the APL representatives travelled to Perth to meet with potential buyers.

The Glory are also without a manager in the wake of Ruben Zadkovich’s off-season resignation, with Kenny Lowe taking over the side in the interim during their 6-2 friendly loss to West Ham at Optus Stadium and their 4-0 defeat to Macarthur FC in their mid-week Australia Cup play-off in Darwin.

However, it is understood former Matildas and Central Coast Manager coach Alen Stajcic, who is currently coaching The Philippines at the Women’s World Cup, is the front-runner for the job full-time.

RIP Tricky Trev. Englands 1st million dollar transfer and a pillar of Wednesday folklore.

Francis is an iconic figure at Hillsborough having played for and managed the club.

After a glittering career taking in Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Sampdoria, Atlanta, Rangers and QPR, the gifted forward joined Wednesday for the final chapter of his playing days in 1990.

To say ‘Tricky Trev’ made an S6 impact would be an understatement. Time and again he entered proceedings from the bench to almost single-handedly turn games on their head.

Making 38 starts and 51 appearances as a substitute, he was a key figure in our promotion back to the top tier in 1990/91 and League Cup success of the same season.

The departure of manager Ron Atkinson opened the door for Francis to take the reins in June 1991.

During his first season in the hot seat, he led the Owls to a third-place finish in the old Division One and both domestic cup finals the following year, when Wednesday were twice agonisingly edged out by Arsenal.

Francis left Hillsborough in May 1995, leaving an indelible mark on the club’s history.

Prior to Wednesday, of course, he was widely acclaimed as the finest footballer of his generation, becoming the first £1m British player after leaving Birmingham for Forest.

He helped the Reds to successive European Cup final triumphs in 1979 against Malmo – in which he scored the winning goal – and 1980, when Forest beat Hamburg.

On the international stage, Francis posted 52 caps for England.

Our thoughts are with Trevor’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

I dont really like F1, just a big wank fest of rich tossers. However, I do like Aussies in global sport no matter what the sport is. Why the F did Ricciardo leave red bull in the first place? Was it money driven?

Iirc it basically was a bit of that but also trying to be the No 1 Driver at another Team

Was career suicide. Be good if he comes back into the mix

Probably but Drive to Survive Season 1 saved him because the world saw wat a top bloke he was and he gathered a huge following that F1 needs him in a paddock of Robots

Doesn’t bother me the rich man’s argument.

2021 season was my mental saviour in all those lockdowns. The racing was close and exciting and controversial which was a huge distraction for me that I loved

Yeah old Helmut Marko wrapped his arms around young wunderkind Max Verstappen while number one driver Ricciardo was given short shrift at the time. Moving on was totally understandable at the time, and totally beneficial for his bank account, and the smartest thing he did was remain on good terms with Max (who he flew to venues with long after leaving), Horner and Marko. Didn’t burn bridges.

The drive to survive series raised his profile significantly and his standing in F1 hasn’t diminished.

Horner and Marko thought he was treated poorly by Renault and his recent test drive in the RB which would’ve placed him on the front row confirmed he hadn’t lost his driving mojo.

Perez will be looking over his shoulder for sure as Red Bull have proven they are ruthless when results aren’t matching their expectations.

Matildas have been rocked on the eve of their second World Cup clash with Mary Fowler and Aivi Luik ruled out with injury.

Both suffered a mild concussion at training in separate incidents on Tuesday and were ruled out of Thursday’s clash with Nigeria at Suncorp Stadium.

The Matildas issued a statement confirming the news as the team prepared for their final training session in Brisbane.

While both have fully recovered, they are abiding by the Football Australia graduated return to play protocol.

The news is a huge blow to Australia who are already without injured skipper Sam Kerr.
