To me, he reminds me of Luke Hodge, except for his greater height and lesser build. He is incredibly versatile, like Hodge. He's a strong marker, a smooth kicker (though he must improve his goalkicking), and a smooth mover, qualities that I think people greatly overshadow when looking at Hodge. He's got Hodge's Football IQ as well. But if there's one quality he possesses that is most similar to Luke Hodge, it is his leadership capabilities. He leads from the front every week. He never lowers his standards and does everything he can for his side to win. I am a great fan of his. I hope he can close out the season well in the last few games.

What's also struck me is the ability for him to keep his feet in crazy contested situations and just accelerate away.

Ablett jnr and Cyril had that ability as well, albeit with a much lower centre of gravity.
Memory Lane: watching Ablett jnr at his peak see Cyril coming at him and Ablett deciding, “hell no, not Cyril… I cannot don’t-argue him, accelerate away or dodge… I have to dump kick before he gets me…”. That 2 seconds of Ablett processing the trouble he was in is etched in my brain as one of the quintessential reasons why Cyril was awesome. No tackle laid, no stat made… just panic provided to the best player of the time.

For me Day is like James Hird. Like Hird, Day has a lesser build but has a footy IQ significantly greater than most in the last 30 years.

And as Day does a few more pre-seasons he is only going to get better.

Of all the players to compare a Hawk to, you guys choose a disgraced drug cheat. Sad.

Nobody is comparing their ethics.

If the physical comparison exists we should be mature enough to acknowledge it.

Hird was a Brownlow medallist and big game player. Happy for Day to share a similar playing career!

I don't get the Hird comparisons, so much of Hird's game from the start was built around his ability to hit the scoreboard. If the only real comparison is the one touch play then I'd argue he's more dissimilar to Hird than similar.

So many of these comparisons work a bit, but don't work more. He doesn't hit the scoreboard like Hird, he's quicker and more athletic than Pendles, he has better skills than Fyfe. I feel it's best to not do the comparison thing at all.

As I did the initial comparison let me expand. I wont bother responding about Hird v Day's ethics or morals because honestly i CBF wasting my time. I was only comparing Day to Hird in that instant when he ran at full pace and one grabbed the ball in the centre of the ground. To me it reminded me Hird. That's all, nothing more. Agree on the goal kicking deficiencies and yes lets hope Will can add that to his game. He's going to be a star. (just like Hird was - on the field.)

I called renowned philosopher and ethicist Peter Singer to seek his view on the ethics of Day v Hird.

He responded:
‘Who the hell are you and how did you get my number? Now F$&K OFF…and by the way, be nice to animals’.

So I think that settles it.

That's another thing I reckon Day has in common with Hird along with the vision and one touch skills.

Both are/were of a slender type build but also both are/were deceptively strong and hard as nails at the ball.

If Day can add goal kicking to his repertoire then he really will begin to resemble Hird MII (on the field not off) which will be massive upside for the club.

Hird was a great footballer when he was playing even if he played for the scum. We aren’t talking about his after playing career.
He was a drug cheat during his playing days too.

This is something I'm unaware of.

Rumours or common knowledge?
Common knowledge that the convicted drug trafficker Shane Charter who supplied Dank and who has openly told people for the last 20 years that he knows how to get around the drug code and what markers to avoid for testing, was also Hird’s “nutritional advisor” while he was playing.

He just happened to also turn up in the supply chain at EFC when Hird wanted his players to get bigger and stronger.
