I wouldn’t be opposed to Bassett.

It’s interesting that the engine room has got Port humming since Ken moved down to the bench. Obviously a bit of that is apparently attributed to Josh Carr but it’d be disingenuous to suggest it’d all be him. Bassett was their defensive coach though and they’ve got the worst Points Against in the top 8, and you’d have to go all the way to Essendon to find a worse team at pure points against. The caveat is that he didn’t exactly have the best cattle, so he should feel right at home.

Yeah that’s kinda my feelings too, Ports defence was baaad. They’re bottom 4 for goals against per inside 50, bottom 5 for scoring shots against per inside 50, bottom 4 for rebound 50 rate (ie the % of inside 50s they rebound), their defensive 1v1 loss % is absolutely terrible, outright last by a mile.

I know stats don’t tell the full picture but basically every key defensive statistic they’re poor in, I know their personnel isn’t great but still - and then the fact he’s been effectively sacked on the back of that season sorta says it all.

It’s just not a move that inspires a lot of confidence, and without knowing the full picture it feels very last minute ie “well we have to get someone he’ll do” to me tbh

WHY are we going into the game with trepidation against a team who's been flogged by 100+ points 6+ times this season?
Where is belief?
Where is the drive?

We had a close to full-strength side, and we're worried about the Eagles?

I was on my way to the game so didn't see it, but steeled myself and watched it afterwards and it was a horrific watch considering I knew what a debacle the actual game would be. Combined with his dejected post-game address to the players that was made available to us, it seemed like his position was no longer tenable.

Bottom line is that he used to be a great coach as he had a gameplan with a point of difference and could make the players more than the sum of their parts. Now he's getting the opposite - less than he should in terms of performance from a team with the talent it has imo.

I'm not really sweating the assistant coaching lineup next year as I think the ship has sailed on this regime and we're just marking time until he can be paid out. Would love to be proved wrong but I think we're one or two injuries away from a bottom six finish next year.

These names are not appealing. The club better have something up it's sleeve. We need a young innovative mind with fresh ideas to join the fold. Any inside word on who that is or has the mcqualter talk died down now? Gold Coast are going to be a top 6 team next year mark my words they are coming hard

It makes complete sense that we’d be making announcements after the best and fairest and after the grand final to have any positive news see a bit of clear air.

I do sincerely hope that we’ve at least locked in a couple of coaches already and aren’t still in the interviewing stages though.

I hope we are doing our due diligence and not locking in the first candidate that says yes

It is hard to not see it the way you have described it.

Those comments were weird to hear before the game but when they became prophetic those comments became somewhat eerie when the game finished.
