Had to pop into the club today to sort a few things - quite a number of lads in training including Xerri, Bergman and Greenwood (who stopped to have a chat and is a ripping fella). Hamish Free was running laps solo. Looks like the big boys are leaving no stone unturned in the race for first ruck.

No surprise with big X, very glad to hear about the others. I wonder if they're together in one of those 5 man groups Clarko set up.

How long until the first “Look at them so happy enjoying themselves on holidays, they should be at Arden Street doing a pre-pre-pre-pre-season”
We have a winner!
On that basis, 95% of the list should be staying behind to work on their fitness/bodies because most are not AFL-level-fit - they ran out of legs week in week out - complete embarrassment.

In this era, with the amount they get paid - anywhere from $7,000 to $12,000 a week, how about be professional, especially when you finish so low on the ladder year after year? And the footy-trip team bonding argument - last year's Bali trip proves what a joke that is. Go on a footy trip when you stop embarrassing yourselves week in week out.

Social media pisses me off, wish it didn't exist in AFL offseasons. This post probably belongs in the grumpy old thread and I do it every year.

LDU and Lark's have earnt a trip like it more than anyone else in the group.

But .............it still grates me a little bit that I'm seeing Instagram flooded with Oktoberfest shots, Sail Croatia, European shots etc from a playing group that was a bee's dick from 3 consecutive spoons and has one of the worst win losses in the AFL era over the last 4 seasons.

Then, the only kid that has come in and drives the professional standards from day 1, looks certain AA quality, put the side on his back all season, is doing hot box gym sessions in his spare time between award commitments and charity days, in Melbourne, preparing for the AFL pre-season.

Coincidence? I don't think so.

**** it, just give Sheez the captaincy.

Playing in a losing side, particularly for some of these players for the best part of 4 years, would be completely exhausting both physically and mentally, trying to get up each week after getting smashed by 100 points, 60 points etc. How do you expect them to come back and attack pre-season if they don't have some sort of mental break, it is impossible to come back refreshed ready to go again if you don't get away from it all. In fact I can gaurantee you they if they don't have a break they would actually perfrom worse next year.

It's great that Sheezel, and others are already doing some training, but I'm sure he will have a break and get away at some point the last thing we want is for one of our best players to burn out prematurely do you want him to play with us for 9 years or 14 years?

Seriously getting sick and tired of people suggesting players don't deserve a holiday. If you genuinely don't believe they deserve a break then stay out of this thread for your sake and for ours.

I get it, which is why I wish social media didn't exist, as I wouldn't see it, for it to annoy me.

We have the same conversation every year. Has much changed? Has the refreshing up given them a new lease on life to attack pre-season and come back AFL fit?

Nope.

I think we'd be 18th in the fitness ranks and have been for the best part a decade.

I don't begrudge them european footy trips holidays at all, they can do what they want, but holidays like that aren't going to change the needle and I'm over this clubs performances.

Our single biggest issue over the last 5 years has been fitness.

This isn't on the club at all, as this is now built into their CBA, I don't believe the club is actually allowed to formally contact them in this period regarding training etc.

This is on the players and how much they actually WANT to be elite footballers.

Maybe you should read about the pre-season that turned Melbourne around as a football club. It didn't involve sail croatia and steins in Munich...

Of course they deserve a break. And they earn good money. Good on them enjoy it.

However, I wouldn't want to be that player that comes back in Nov needing to get fit...they'd want to be ready to go on day 1.

Clarko's looking for premiership players. This is probably as good a test as any.

I don’t begrudge players that have earned an off-season - but where I think questions deserve to be raised are with players like Comben (no doubt I’ll get shot for this). There’s nothing in Munich that’s going to help you get to AFL standard at this part of your career. I’m not sure some of these guys understand how hard they have to work to come out of injury back to athletic status. Round one isn’t that far away and that means training, real training comes even sooner.

Not a bad year. Bali with the boys, handful of games, injury, rehab, Munich with the boys.

I’m not begrudging holidays here, but I am saying I hope it’s a two week vacation. When you’re talking about rehab that’s probably the minimum time you get to be out of constant tailored training for an injury

There was a definite improvement from 2022 to 2023, no 100 point thrashings, yes there were some big losses but there were also a lot of 1 - 2 goal losses and 5 – 6 goal losses as opposed to 8 – 10 goal losses and 16+ goal losses that we witnessed in 2022. That's down to improved fitness and game plan. We clearly tired in the last quarter on occasions but our ability to run games out and compete in the last quarter improved quite a bit from 2022 to 2023

We can't magically become the fittest team in the competition overnight, we're building and I suspect we're this pre-season and the next to getting up to standard.

I agree this is on the players and whether they want to be elite and compete in finals year in year out, I think we'll start to see who does and doesn't it takes time to change the culture of the club but we're turning this around, unfortunately Clarko's absence (through no fault of his own) really derailed that this year we're not starting from scratch, the foundations are there but it certainly was a setback.

Keep in mind we don't know what else the players are doing overseas are they going on runs in the morning, hiking in the Swiss Alps? Swimming the English Channel?

I'd be happy to read about Melbourne's pre-season do you have a link to the article?

Correct but they should only be judged if they do come back to pre-season unfit, until that point it's just assumption and projection.
