Why are people throwing in any picks at all? We will pay perhaps $500000 of his salary. That takes picks out of the equation.
Remember, North are in dire need of experienced quality defenders. They are the ones that need to make this happen.
Relax.
Indeed ... I initially thought we might be paying much more than 500k and, thus, I expected a pick back

Update from afl.com.au

GIANTS DEFENDER LIKELY TO STAY

THE GIANTS appear likely to retain experienced defender Nick Haynes, despite lingering interest from clubs in taking on the final year of his contract.

Haynes is coming towards the end of a heavily back-ended deal that runs through until 2024, while the Giants have been open to parting with the 31-year-old under the right circumstances. But interested teams appear resigned to the fact Haynes is more than likely to remain at the club next season, despite a difficult campaign where he dropped in and out of Adam Kingsley's best side. Haynes, a best and fairest and All-Australian at the Giants in 2020, played just 20 of a possible 26 games this season while he was either the substitute or substituted out of seven of those fixtures.

Elsewhere, the Giants are still hopeful of resuming negotiations with the Crows around a deal for contracted forward Elliott Himmelberg, but as reported on AFL.com.au on Friday talks have stalled after Suns forward Mabior Chol nominated the Hawks as his preferred trade destination.

The club has also met with Port Adelaide small forward Orazio Fantasia and could look to sign the 28-year-old to its rookie list over the off-season.

COMPO PICKS RAISE EYEBROWS

THE EARLY compensation packages delivered for unrestricted free agents James Jordon and Matt Flynn have been met with some surprise around the League, as clubs wait on the returns for some of this year's bigger free agency deals.

Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney each received end-of-second round selections for Jordon and Flynn, which ultimately fell at picks No.39 and 40 respectively. Clubs had initially been expecting the compensation packages for both deals to be far later in the draft order, leading to an added sense of intrigue around what this year's more significant free agency moves could deliver.

Essendon is expected to land restricted free agents Ben McKay from North Melbourne and Jade Gresham from St Kilda, while Brisbane will secure fellow restricted free agent Tom Doedee from Adelaide.

The AFL currently has a detailed points-based formula that decides free agency compensation, which considers a range of factors including the financial terms of the deal and the age of the player moving clubs among others. To trigger end-of-second round compensation banding, the player must have received an offer within the top 50 per cent of paid players for that season.

IIRC, Lobb wanted to get to Melbourne because his partner is Victorian; given Melbourne's situation with finding a forward/ruck partner for Gawn and solving some of their KPF woes (not that I think Lobb is a great answer) I's suggest the Deons are more likely than GWS.

For those interested in the elder Duursma:

Lobb wanted to go to us last year but we weren't interested at his price. The Dogs were his fallback. But I'm yet to see anything to say this isn't just another make stuff up and delete the stuff that doesn't work account.

You know who would be a better ruck/fwd option than Elliott Himmelberg? Rory Lobb 🥰

You gonna pay the 700k for us Bangers?
I'm not claiming to know the make up of our existing contracts and what our TPP looks like at the moment, but with the increase of salary cap over the next 4 years and guys like Ward and Haynes getting to the point of signing 1 year contracts, if most of our players are on fixed contracts rather than % contracts 700k isn't going to be that much for a guy that'd instantly be our second best KPF and ruck.

We're going to have a harder fixture than this season, teams are going to know how to expose are more, we're going to have injuries, etc. if we want to stay in the top 4 fight next year relying on natural development isn't enough, bringing in players like Lobb when the opportunity presents will, it's the same reason I'm a little peeved that we were never in the Adams conversation as well

Just joking with you, but I agree on Adams …. Oliver as well, just not convinced about the Lobbster these days

If my options are a)Lachie Keeffe b) Elliott Himmelberg or c) Rory Lobb, I'm dragging myself over hot coals to ensure it's Lobb

I will carry you over the coals to get Lobb 😂

All of our KPF’s are the same height and Lobb stretches the opposition backs and can pinch hit in the ruck

Dogs have so many KPF’s they need to move 1 of them, Darcy can’t even get a look in

We’re in the same boat with Haynes, straight swap ?

Or package with some picks to include Bailey Smith
The same boat with Haynes in some amnner ... however, Haynes has been nothing but a team and club first player.

Lobb pissed off on a contract to Freo, then jumped ship to the Dogs, now wants back to us, again, again? I reckon you get 6-7 good games a year out of him, but he doesn't play the team role that Kingsley expects .... watch him at Freo or the Dogs

OK, look at this realistically.

Nick Haynes will have to go from a "player call" to a "club call to move on". We could not manage the salaries otherwise. North Melbourne is probably the ideal club for him, but given the shift in circumstances, it might change what salary we opt to pay for him in 2024. $800k leaves Norths with $500k to pay, and GWS with $500k spare for Lobb. Or we do a straight swap with them, Haynes for Lobb, which improves both teams, but probably makes us all recoil with ick.

Lobb was reported at a 3 year $1.5m contract, so 2 years remaining at $500k, which seems to fit. He's 31 next season, so 2 seasons left he should be OK. Dogs paid #30 plus a future second round pick; the best we could likely do is #40 (our Flynn compo pick, or wherever it lands), or a future second rounder ... or the straight swap paying some salary comes out even. Not sure Lobb's worth a great deal, but if we wanted him we'll make it work no doubt.

We would drop the pursuit of Elliott Himmelberg (so, hopefully no guarantees to HH there), delist Keeffe, and replace with Lobb. (We definitely need another budding defender, so the only thing would be if we continued to pursue EH for that role.)

Lobb would be a far superior 3rd tall/spare ruck than Keeffe, or EH, or anyone else on our list, so definitely a win there. It might delay Cadman's development, but injuries (for which we were very lucky this year), may give him opportunity.

It probably works. Although I do agree with Orange crush, the guy ****ed off in pursuit of $$$, whereas Haynesy is a club legend and such a swap would leave a nasty taste in my mouth. But can we swallow that if it pushes us closer to a flag?

That's all fair enough and qite doable ... but I just don't trust the guy ... seen him play some absolute shockers in the last couple of years and reckon he doesn't offer enough, not at that salary, and he would be the one player you can guarantee to shit himself in a big game

Really, I mean the talent is there but he seems to want to run for a fresh start every time it gets tough.

In a year or two he will be wanting a trade from us to Queensland.

31 seems a sticking point for me. His decline in form might not be that... it would be a sign of his body failing him.

Just note that I'm not advocating getting him, just analysing the situation.

I'm not really seeing any "decline in form" in those stats, more, that's how Doggies used him - he was third target behind Naughton and JUH. He still averaged 1.2 goals per game. Surely, we'd take that above Keeffe's 1 goal from 14 games (& 6.7 HO per game)?

However, yes, acknowledge his age and the potential that he'll drop off - but Keeffe will be 34 next campaign if we don't get EH.
