I wonder how much emphasis Austin would put on what we have comin g to the club in the 24 draft? If the Campo twins are mids/wings/HBFs would he draft a running defender like we have been linked?

It doesn’t make much sense to me, although I’ve no idea where Austin thinks these two will play.

Im a big fan of our list and only see a few areas of need but the pessimist in me can see that changing very quickly, i could easily see players like Kemp, Silvagni, Kennedy leaving at the end of next year if they are clearly reserve players.

With who we brought in through trades and DFA, i still see us going KPD and an attacking mid/fwd.

It's a tough one because neither are Ashcroft or Daicos. They are talented players that most likely get drafted (in ben's case earlyish) but not at the level where you can bank on them.

I reckon Austin would be considering them in his thinking but not going as far as completely structuring his approach around them. Luckily we don't have many list gaps and both brothers could be developed in several roles so not a huge issue if we double up with a similar type this year.

Interesting. Maybe Angus Hastie?
Not sure that there actually is “word”, but yes, Hastie is shaping as a good mid sized prospect. A bit of physical development required, but anyone recruited for us in that part of the ground would have “time”.

I think Austin is accutely aware of the fact that not every player goes on to have a 200 game career - for a variety of reasons. Whether they get injured, their development stagnates, their ceiling is lower than expected, or they inexplicably decide they want to play elsewhere or not at all.

2022 off-season we clearly identified the wings as an area of weakness. He brought in Acres, Hollands and Binns.
2023 off-season we clearly identified forward 50 connection as an area of weakness. He brought in Hollands, we're expecting him to bring in Fantasia, and it would be unsurprising to see a similar player drafted with one of our two picks. Monahan also played as a predominantly forward half player in Ireland, and could be utilised there if he comes on.

If he's identified D50 rebound as an area that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later, I doubt he'll hang his hat on Duffy this year and L. Campo next year.

It may be a boring or conservative approach, and some will likely suggest that we should be "bolder" or "more creative", but if it means that every year we're addressing a weakness with multiple options, and at least one of those options is a "hit" rather than a "miss", then the list continues to improve. It simply comes down to forward planning and accurate assessment of the list profile, something I think he's shown a keen eye for so far.

I think a more interesting question is whether he'll target a type with our second pick this year (ie. running defender or KPD), or if having addressed the F50 issue with four varied options (mature ager, breakout candidate, draftee, Irish Cat B) he'll take a best available approach with our remaining pick. If the latter, then you'd assume next year we'll be shopping the free agency or trade market for a KPD, unless Young has a strong year and reestablishes himself in the selection mix.

Still think another young ruck must be considered, especially if the prognosis on Mirkov (let alone their belief in his ability to make it) isn't great....?
We have 4 primary rucks plus Young and JSoS for the relief. I think we're okay until the end of next season when a decision on Mirkov can be made either way.

Still think we'll do a draft night trade. Our future 1st + the later second for a teens pick and a future second.

Seconds trade will be upgrade cost and will help us with bid matching anyway

Who’s biting on this?
Teen pick & has/can deal a F2.
Adelaide (14), Collingwood (19) or North (15, 17, 18 - unless handed over to WCE)

Let’s say we’ve got one of those teen picks from North - who would you draft?

BTW - I’m not sure if there are players in that range that I would give up the flexibility of trading for next year without our F1

I don't get the obsession on this board with trading our F1. Particularly for a minor pick upgrade in a poor draft.

For all we know we have a slightly off year and end up with pick 8-12. Ben Campo could easily be a late 1st / 2nd rounder. Plenty of scenarios where we get to use that pick before a bid.

The Campo's are not Daicos / Ashcroft. The reason their clubs could make concrete plans around them a year ahead was because they were guaranteed top 3 picks.

Plus the AFL are reviewing the bidding system. We may need that pick to get both Campos depending on what changes they make. Moving the pick also limits our flexibility in terms of any trade targets.

I'm not ruling out trading F1 but if we do we shouldn't unless we actually get something really good.

I guess you have a more neutral view on Mirkov than me.

Pitto remains a limited ruck, in terms of around the ground influence and O'Keeffe - way too early to call, but rucks aren't getting any shorter.

Noting Edwards has played forward a bit too - with success.

Not meaning to embarrass or unveil, but are you draft watcher, Chris Cavanagh, marcmurphy3? Otherwise I think youre popular or get the same info.
Word is we are keen to use at least one of our 2 picks on a running defender. Luamon Lual has been linked as has Billy Wilson. Collard the only other player I have heard us linked to though unlikely he gets to our pick.
