I'm just guessing and projecting my own personal experiences. I was bitten by the wanderlust bug years ago and have thus quit a lot of jobs to go travelling, sometimes employees have wanted to keep me and kept the job open for me after my return.

For me, I'd feel too presumptuous to ask for leave rather than offer a resignation, but GW has bloody good reason to be a lot more confident than me, so perhaps he did request leave rather than offer a resignation. We'll never know how it went down.
Or, alternatively the conversations he's been having with Ned could have been him feeling too presumptuous to ask for that much leave, and offered to resign instead. But together they have come to a happy compromise where the club has said we'll make it work for all of us & see you back here in September.

Anyway, it's obvious how important he is to the club and we don't want to lose him forever. Six months we can handle, I'm sure.

Yeah that's what I meant. My guess would be him offering a resignation but 6 months leave works better for both him and CFC.

It's certainly an unusual situation with Wright and if we hadn't won the Premiership I'm not sure if we'd all be so forgiving but we did win it and if having 6 months off now means Wright is refreshed and prepared to commit to Collingwood long term upon his return then it'll be worth it.

In reality Wright joined us as general manager of football but had to take on dual roles once Guy wasn't retained as list manager.

He was a driving force behind the recruitment of McRae and was also the architect of us landing McStay, Mitchell, Hill and Frampton at the end of 2022. We secured Schultz this off season.

Given the added workload and responsibility he has taken on since his arrival and that it culminated in the 2023 Premiership it's hard to argue he hasn't earned the right to ask for us to accommodate his and his wifes wishes.

With experienced AFL people like Kelly, Browne, Hine, McRae, Leppitsch and Bolton all within our football club I feel we're well placed to cover for Wright during his sabbatical.

Not sure why we always jump to things like burnout, mental health etc...

It's likely to be nothing more than a successful, well to do bloke wanting to spend six months in Europe. You don't need to be burnt out for that.

My money is on him offering his resignation, but us rating him so highly that we want him back after his Europe adventure and have thus given him the leave. Not ideal for us, but we obviously think it's better than losing and replacing him.
If he is burnt out or suffering mental health issues after being the driver of the juggernaut the last 2 years that has won us a premiership then he can bugger off now. Burning out is not something you do when you are on top of the world as he should have been.

I just think it's as simple as he wants a European summer and the club had the choice between replacing him or giving him leave. They'd prefer the latter. It's not ideal for CFC but I doubt they had a better option.

You would think that Wright has given an undertaking that he isnt going to tasmania in 2025 or 2026.....

I've rubbed shoulders with a few slippery fellow employees over the years, who have taken long periods of unpaid leave and then returned for a few weeks and only to leave the building forever.

The most recent examples have been women on paid parental leave who have joined an organisation for the generous benefits and then left to go elsewhere after having a couple of buns in the oven. For blokes, the equivalent is getting time off to study and to do exams, and then leaving the company for a higher paid position once the certificate has been acquired.

Not that I've got any evidence to accuse Wright of a lack of ethics.... just sayin

Notice from the club....evidently Wrighty is the least of our problems

It may not be that he's currently burnt out ..but having this leave when the club is so well run with Ned in charge, will have him back refreshed to continue with us for hopefully a few more years to come.

This holiday may be something he & his wife have wanted for years and now just seems the right time for them both.

He's held multiple roles at the same time since he started at the Pies '3' years ago..and prior to that he spent years at the Hawks. I can't imagine that would have been easy with Kennett as President, lol.

So, it’s just that he now feels like a 6 month holiday during the season, and we’re all good with that?

Yeah right.

You can feel however you like about it Kirby

I have confidence in the club & the plans they will have in place.

We're allowed to disagree.
I’m not troubled by any opinion you may have, and I support the club too, but the idea/theory that we gave him a 6 month holiday out of some gracious gesture is fanciful and not grounded in reality.

Something quite substantial led to this suddenly being announced, particularly noting that we do not have a replacement plan in place. We’re now scrambling to fill the hole.

The most likely scenario is that he was on the way out the door (with the intention to travel because he’s tired/ had enough) and this is our attempt to keep the door open for him.

That sounds far more likely based upon the real world.

Okay, if it makes you feel better to make up imaginary scenarios, go ahead. 👍

The wife probably laid down the law last friday night...."its either me or the club, graham".....
