There's no way he plays at Box Hill IMO.
Of course there is.

He may hardly get a touch against the Dogs. We don't know yet.

He may get injured and not be available for rd 1 at all.

I expect he will play rd 1 but if he doesn't perform against real opposition or gets injured then he won't.

Looks good in match sim based on the highlights, but that's as far as it goes at the moment.

I have seen many pre seasons in my life. Trust me the kid is special. He will be lighting up the MCG for years to come. I am glad he will be wearing the brown and gold.

Agree - but that wasn't my point. I think we have a really good one here as well.

However, if he doesn't do much in the next two matches against the Dogs - and Ginnavin, Moore, Breust maybe Butler all play better - would you still select him?

Yes, he could also get struck by lightning at any point, or an avid garden gnome collector could abduct him after training one evening.

That's why I said it was my opinion that he won't be playing at Box Hill.

Who said he plays poorly against the Bulldogs. It is as though you do want him to succeed.

I said I think we have a good one, but no one is entitled to games purely based on junior output and match-sim potential. He has to earn it (just like everyone else) against opposition teams.

The question was if others play better - does he still get a gig even though he’s never played at the level.

Just realised the Dees have 3 best 22 players 175cm or shorter and none of them are mids. We only have one player on our list under 175cm. Height is not as relevant in footy as it is in other sports. There are plenty of roles and opportunities for smalls in AFL.

He is now listed as 170cm, hopefully has another 2-4 cm growth in him…
I think I have heard that line about a few more cms somewhere else before.
Wizards don't grow too tall though, hence the large pointy hats they wear

Why?

He doesn’t care if he stays the same height, so why should we hope he grows?

It won’t make any difference to how he plays or matches up against opponents.

FWIW - Nick was listed as 170cm at the start of the 2023 u18 season (when he was 18).

Just about to turn 19, he’s unlikely to grow any taller.

Move on I reckon.
