In German "ch" sounds unusual to English speakers. It's a bit like the sound we make to imitate a cat hissing, but influenced by the preceding letters.Re the mucking around with names bit I watched an extremely obscure programme from the Netherlands late the other night on fox where the name Koch was pronounced as Koke.
I much prefer the German Kok because it has a real ring to it, but the Dutch version could explain kern's fascination with fizzy drinks.
