Player Watch Welcome to Port Adelaide Pick #15 (2024) - Joe Berry

Incredibly silly to write Berry off after 3 games. We've got him for 3 years and he'll be given every opportunity to reach his potential.

He is however currently in our AFL team and so it is fair game to say jeeeeeeeez his kicking was offffff. One of the worst kicking games I can remember. Loved his endeavour in the first half though, running to really good spots and creating some free flowing overlap. Hopefully the skills and composure develop as he gains confidence and becomes more comfortable.

I'm not writing the kid off. He finds the ball but bung him in the 2's till he gets comfortable. At the moment he is a momentum killer. We have a plethora of more experienced momentum killers to fill his position.

Berry has impressed me with his ability to gut run and finding the ball. He will be a good player but we need to give him a chance to work on his delivery at the Magpies for a month.

Why? I don't understand the point of him spending a month in Magpies. It's not like we are making finals this year. We literally need to giving this guys as many games as possible at AFL level. They'll eventually find their feet. We need to be playing Berry, Moraes, Cochrane, Walsh, Lorenz as much as possible. I was hesitant to expose Whitlock before but now I think he should be learning his craft at AFL level too. There's absolutely no point spending time in our SANFL side where there's no development coaches

Set shots, or field kicking the issue? Thought he was great in the first half, absolutely cooked in the second, wasn’t alone.
He was a set shot gun in junior level, so he's clearly been Hinkleyfied in that sense

Field kick first two games have been good. Thought last night was subpar

It's his third game in a team riddled with injury and playing like it's checked out. He'll be alright.
For what we gave up for him we need him to be better than 'alright'.

It's early days sure, but if a fairy godmother came along and offered us a Murphy Reid for Joe Berry swap right now, any sane person would take it. Feels like we drafted him because we needed a small forward rather than because he was the most talented player on the board.

Cmon Ford, exposed form suggests anything but him having all the skills. Skill is what he has lacked. Too early to write off but the early signs are concerning.
Bit dramatic?

Seems to have all the tools, mostly a good decision maker (aside from that run down the middle where he kicked long to Soldo when he had DBJ in the middle next to him running into an open 50)

Skills have mostly been ok, did miss a few.

Like all of our boys, fitness seems to be a huge concern this season. And when players fatigue, decision making and skills fall away.
