I think I recall it being along the lines of $800k for 5 or 6 years, slightly front ended.

Yep, 4mil over 5 years, heavily front-ended, was the rumoured amount. (And quite often those amounts are exaggerated if you believe what Max Gawn thinks about them).

Given the Dees would comfortably offer him 750k, think it makes it clear it wouldn't be a 'big money move'.

“Slightly front ended” aka $1m a year

That said they handed over 2 firsts for Gibbs as we did for Lever (neither reported to be on 1m a year after moving) so those blokes saying we are only going to get a mid-teens pick should go negotiate for the opposition.

Front loaded deals are also commonly renegotiated for extensions the front-load has been paid.

Contract value and picks aren't interchangeable currency. I swear this discussion happens every year.

Contract offers can and will fluctuate based on available cap space which will be different depending on current stars and retiring players.

Having plenty of cap space available to throw around doesn't automatically equate to high picks.

I do think there's a bit in the contract value determining the trade value. If you see a club offer big money to a player, especially in contract it tells you how highly they rate them and that translates to a certain amount of leverage.

You also have to pay a premium for established KPP's as the good ones are hard to find.

The bottom line with Petty is that if we still believe he can contribute to us potentially winning a flag then he's worth much more to us than a pick that's going to be little better than the compensation we'd get if he left as a free agent.

Adelaide aren't winning the flag next year, they don't need to throw the house in terms of picks for a bloke they can just get the year after for free

So why bother trading him at all? Discussion pretty much over at that point.

Would some on here be against signing Tom McDonald to a 1 year deal..?

There's a correlation between contract offer and picks, but it's not a direct relationship.

As you've very rightly pointed out, high picks are worth much more to some clubs than others. All depends on if they're in a position to challenge for a flag now or if they need to go the rebuild route.

For 1 year.... Lol...

Do the maths mate. What's 4mil over 5 years work out to per year?

as I said, it isn’t uncommon for contracts to be renegotiated part way through. He banks a mill in his first year.

Ain’t no mid first rounder going to be enough for a bloke banking $1m over the next 12 months however you want to look at it.

If it's so common, name a handful of contracts that were a million a year front loaded and then re done for a million a year 2 years in? Must be heapppppps

Most get extended before current one expires, obviously the $ value would vary from one to the next.

Now you are just arguing for the sake of it.

Which million dollar contracts were front loaded then extended 2 years in?

Adelaide would be silly to give too much up for Petty. Compared to us they're already stacked for key position talent. Last thing they need is to do a West Coast-Tim Kelly and give up two first rounders just because a bloke wants to move back to their state.

I dare them to be that stupid, actually.

Thilthorpe is always injured and Tex is near the end. Their key defenders are also often injured/garbage - although I don't mind Worrell.

I think Petty is actually a good fit at the crows. But they also need to fix their one paced midfield. Few holes at the Crows.

Not saying the Crows can't use him but if he decides to go home and nominates them they won't have to give up two first rounders to get him anyway. Just don't think they need to give up too much for him.

I think they're playing one too many tall forwards at the moment, they need to get Rachele and Rankine being targeted more often. Undoubtedly those 2 will kick 10 between them tonight now I've said that.
