Five AA was playing in the background just then.

Justice Rowe says Finlayson MUST get 6 weeks because under AFL rules his homophobic slur is no different to the racial slur that cost Taylor Walker 6 weeks. That is just Rowe being Rowe and playing to his audience of course. There are considerable differences between incidents including the fact that Walker was not involved in the game and neither he nor the crows owned up to what had happened and it took a formal report from one of the crows own trainers for them to acknowledge the incident.

Not to downplay the seriousness of the incident, but I have to agree with Koch - the AFL set the standard with a suspended sentence for Clarkson, an experienced and mature coach and leader of the AFL for his homophobic slur. They can hardly hand out a sizeable suspension to a player just a few weeks later.

I have kept my powder dry on this one so far because no matter what you say or what your view is, it won’t be popular with some people. The afl has backed themselves into a corner a little bit with the precedent of a fine for Clarkson, who I believe should have gotten games. In terms of what Jeremy said I don’t understand it as something that people would say in this day and age. But he obviously said it and has put himself in a position where he has to cop the whack that the afl chooses to dish out. It’s reasonable for them to give him games and I would be ok with anything up to a couple.

I suppose it is a matter of what 'double standards' path they choose.

But yeah - I can see Jezza getting a couple of games and probably deservedly. But that certainly exposes the AFL hypocrisy.

Crows Gay group statement making the link to the Walker suspension pretty obvious. Demonstrating a lack of class in the process imho by playing inter-club politics.

Finlayson apologised to the player dafter the game and owned up with a public apology the next day. Contrast that with the ducking and weaving of your mate Tex on his racism slur.

Nikola Jokic got fined $25k for saying "no homo" during a press conference and he earns tens of millions, or did at the time.

20k is a huge fine in context.
Well, that fine is inappropriate.

When they introduced the AFL-W, didn’t they adjust tribunal sanctions based on the fact the AFL-W players are on play a fraction of the games and earn a lot less?

In cricket, fines are a percentage of match payments, as all players are paid differently depending on their country.

So we are now dishing out penalties based on the Rainbows Crows Committee? A supporter ground from a team not even involved in the game.

Just out of interest, did they release a statement on Walker? Or Clarkson? Or do they only have an opinion when it is a player from the cross town rivals?

Point being, not their place to put out a statement.

He'll get what he gets and he wont be that big of a loss - keen for them to just get on with it at this stage. Landmark cases like this will be the precedent and the AFL wont be seen to deem bigotry less than racism. He will get weeks.

Was in the process of editing my comment when we lost power for a moment. Absolutely agree - they are playing politics on this.

Every Emily Olle opinion piece is usually trash, tends to whinge, alot and be outrage central over very simplistic things. I'd just not give her the clicks tbh.

Her opinion on this really doesn't matter. He's gonna get weeks regardless of what she thinks lol.

It would be interesting to contrast this to the statement they released about Clarkson.

Can anyone provide a link?...

And now the Advertiser have posted an opinion piece from one of their staff - Emily Olle - attacking Finlayson and Port.

Not mentioned in the byline is the fact that Emily Olle was previously employed as the Digital content manager for the Adelaide Crows. So no bias or agenda there.

I guess we should be happy he wasn't labelled a "piece of s**t" by the tiser. That's progress.

Calling a straight person a slur for gay people is not the same thing as calling a black person a slur for black people. If somebody called Josh Cavallo a homophobic slur, then yeah, they can and should cop 6 weeks.

What exactly are the AFL investigating? Jeremy came clean during the game and apologised during the game.

Are they just checking to see who else has said stuff like this or worse? What will happen if after they give Jeremy games, video emerges of Nick Daicos describing an opposition player’s effort as “gay”? Is it not sexist to call someone a “girl” or a “c***”? What AFL officials have been taped saying things more homophobic than “f****t”?

And if they treat Finlayson more harshly than Clarkson, does this mean Finlayson’s target was gayer than Webster and Dougal Howard? Clarkson’s rap sheet is much worse than Finlayson’s.

The AFL can either judge this incident by community standards or try and set those standards. But they are increasingly being exposed as prepared only to set standards when (and upon whom) it suits them.

That thread got... inoculated, yes.

This one needs a full body enema through it, like old Vlad Dracul used to do in the time of the Ottomans. Right through to the fezzes.

Who knew our mods were also medical practitioners?? ;)

Finny has hopefully learned a lesson.

From a bad word said by a player to character assassinations to intolerance to sexual stuff.

I know there was an eclipse today but wow.

Should have taken your advice. Terrible article, a very unbalanced “opinion” that missed the obvious regarding the Clarkson incident and made some unsubstantiated claims.

Glad I don’t routinely read the Advertiser.

So much for any good vibe from Gather Round.

We got another Port lynching on the cards boys.
Lets make em pay for going to that shit club.
Put em back in their place.
Show they can't manage themselves.

Don't worry, mother AFL will manage you.

We need this in the headlines for weeks, how can we drag this out.

Give people time to forget that messy cocaine thing.

Cmon boys, Monday we do this
Tuesday we say this
You on board Fox, of course
You on board 7, of course
We gotta get to Thursday, drag this out boys.

Cos, you cool with this?
Yes boss.
