How is it that a team who has 'won' every trade period and draft for 20 years has none of the best young players in the AFL and not won a final in that time? They're neither building or contending.

If he goes through with the North deal he doesn’t punch Brayshaw or miss a flag, and who knows what difference all that makes to his career? It was very, very deflating at the time.

Not the whole board. Much of the angst was a reaction to the media’s “North miss out on another big fish” crap. The cost/benefit equation if he accepted the offer was a major concern for many.
Except he punched Brayshaw before he made his decision about the North deal.
I was more disappointed at the time with Gaff than Dusty. Obviously Dusty was a better player but I always felt that was a throw at the stumps and that he'd stay at the Tigers. Gaff was a front line player and felt he was coming to us right up to the moment he didn't.
A sliding doors moment so we'll never know. Had we got Gaff, we'd have not got Polec & the list cloggers. Gaff was still in the AA squad for 2019 and 2020 so he went on to play some good footy. Maybe our 2019-20 seasons would have been better. Other FAs may have been tempted to come. The 2020 list purge wouldn't have happened. Scott would have coached for longer so no Shaw or Noble or probably Clarkson. Perhaps we'd still be a bog ordinary 7th-12th team. We may not have bottomed out so no Sheezel or Wardlaw or McKercher etc.

There was some ITKish talk at the time that Polec agreed to come because of Gaff not as an alternative.

Yeh it’s a mixed bag of posts, so I will stand corrected regarding the “whole board”, but there was certainly some disappointed posters on not getting him
